Context -

You would just have to press a button and you wouldn't have to see it happen

You would be guaranteed not to know any of them beforehand

No one would know it was you unless you confessed

Yanbu yes
Yabu no

I'm sure, in this hypothetical, your self-righteousness over morals and values will be a great comfort to you when you've actively chosen to (unnecessarily) let your children die. I'm sure they'd appreciate that you valued your morals over their lives too, except that they'd be dead, so...

What is self righteous about not opting to kill 10,000 people. Scary that people like you actually exist.

Simply pressing a button is one thing. You’re not confronted with the reality, plenty of people would do that because you disassociate from it.

IMO anyone saying they’d do ‘anything’, including killing (or worse?) to other people’s children, ridiculous and dishonest at best, and a bit scary if they’re being sincere.

Honestly, I think if I was ever in a situation where I had to kill anyone for my child to live, I would. Of course I would. Instinct to protect your child’s life would take over.

There was a story my grandmother told me about one of her friends when they were young.

Thr village in Hertfordshire where they lived was bombed during the war. Her friend was a childminder. Her only thought was to grab her own two children over the others. She got them to safety without a thought for the other children in her care (no one died). But she left them. Her only thought was for her own sons. She was racked with guilt and only told my grandmother the truth.

No matter how much people talk about morals, your instincts can’t be overridden. Of course if it came down to it, most people would indeed to anything for their children. Including killing someone in cold blood.

There aren't 10,000 people in my town, I don't know anyone in my town beyond a passing greeting, and that would take quite a long time if you had to do it personally.

I'm not 'kill happy', I just value my children's lives more than anyone else's. And no, I'm not sure there's a line I wouldn't cross if my children never found out. It would probably ruin me, but if I could save their lives then I couldn't do anything else. I'm surprised that others would just choose to let their children die (in effect, choosing to kill them).

OK, so you'd, let's say, personally do the holocaust again to save your children. Great.
What about other things? If your child was disfigured, would you torture mine to death to remove the disfigurement?

Look, if you're hypothetically happy to let your child die to save strangers' lives, that's your look out – but I doubt that you wouldn’t push the button when it came down to it.

You've accused me of making other people's trauma about me. No-one actually said that they have trauma; you, InterIgnis, defender of the right to kill, are the one who has intuited trauma.
If the hypothetical means this much to you, perhaps you should <deep breath> go to therapy?

Ah, and I’m also not the one inventing new and more extreme scenarios to get outraged about. Lol.

The PP gave the strong impression that her answer was based on what she is currently experiencing. If said suspicion is correct, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to consider that being in such a position would be traumatic. Your response? “But what about my child?!”.

‘Rights’ don’t come into it. If you ask someone to sacrifice others to save their own, then a significant proportion would do just that regardless of whether or not they have the legal right to do so. It is what it is.

It's interesting to me how overwrought you're getting over a hypothetical, coming up with ever more unrelated and extreme scenarios. Why is that?

Why do you think it might be?
(I note that you still don't answer)

I think it's because you would push the button, but don’t want to admit that you would.

And my children wouldn’t be expelled from school, but if they were, injuring someone over it is hilariously disproportionate. I also can’t imagine, given the people they are, that they would rape anyone – but if they did, I'd fully support them being convicted and imprisoned for it. And if they were innocent of any wrongdoing and their life hung in the balance, I would rather kill strangers than deliberately choose to let them to die.

Thanks for answering, but it just demonstrates how inconsistent you are.
Is injuring someone over a school place any more "hilariously disproportionate" than doing literally anything to prevent your kid dying (e.g. killing the entire population of the earth or something)? I don't think so.
Also, is their guilt or innocence relevant? Maybe a bit more complicated, but again I don't think so - in both scenarios (pressing the button or covering up your kid's misdeeds you are promoting a great injustice).

No, I'm not inconsistent. I would do whatever it took to prevent my child dying through no fault of their own, if they didn't bear the burden of my actions, but I wouldn’t do it to shield my children from the natural consequences of their own actions.

You wish you could kill 10,000 people right now?

May I suggest therapy?

Well I know I can't FFS!
It was more about being powerless to save the life of the one I love, feeling raw & emotional right now so forgive me for wishing I could save him, even in a hypothetical way.

You are - I've explained why but you don't want to see it.
