Context -

You would just have to press a button and you wouldn't have to see it happen

You would be guaranteed not to know any of them beforehand

No one would know it was you unless you confessed

Yanbu yes
Yabu no

No. My child has died and I know that grief. I wouldn’t kill one person to save the other two, let alone 10000. But this is so hypothetical it’s essentially pointless.

I’d kill for my child is sentimental nonsense, it’s not about your child who will either be dead and won’t care or will be alive and living with survivor’s guilt. It’s about you and your imagined ability to live with the pain of their loss. It’s selfish. You wouldn’t be killing for your child, you’d be killing for you. Would you really murder 10000 people to avoid emotional pain?

This, 100%.

OtterlyAstounding · 03/11/2026 00:47

I'd kill 8 billion quite happily, without a moment’s regret. Hell, given those parameters (a button, anonymity) I'd quite happily murder great swathes of people just to get rid of them, even without the life of someone I love hanging in the balance – rapists, child abusers, and wife beaters, for starters.

But then I don’t particularly like humans as a demographic.

This, 100%.

But that's not right. In this scenario, the child wouldn’t know, so no survivor's guilt. And it wouldn’t be about my emotional pain at all. It would be about wanting my child to be able to live a full and long life.
It’s ridiculous to suggest that not wanting your child to die is actually all about avoiding your own emotional pain, not because you want them to have the chance at a life that isn't cut horribly short. If it were possible, I'd choose to suffer the equivalent emotional pain of them dying if it meant they were alive, because it's not about me, it's about them.

Well what actually inspired it was reflecting on the limitations (or lack thereof) of the national welfare state (any nation that has one). You can help 10,000 people from another country and refuse at least some lifesaving but expensive treatments or services domestically or you can do the opposite. Someone is going to die in either situation and you have the power to choose who. You're actually choosing whether you press the button or not.

I was just curious about who would rather the strangers or the loved one. It might have been a better example if I'd said one stranger to save a loved one, on reflection.

Every single one of us is going to die. Hate to break it to you.

Utter bullshit.

12 Monkeys (TV show) goes round in circles as the various protagonists choose whether to save billions or their child.

Spoiler: they all choose their child.

StarCourt · 03/11/2026 08:38

Yes I would for DD

sillyrubberduck · 03/11/2026 08:49

Yes just to save my DS. It would not be easy though and I would feel terrible but I could not , not save my son . I would not do it for DH although I love him and would not expect him to do it for me. Nor do I expect DS to save me either. But a Mums love knows no limits in my opinion.

Everytime we spend £2.5m on treating one child with cancer in the UK we decide not to spend the money saving 800 children from Malaria in Nigeria. I've never heard any parent say that they would rather not treat their own child from cancer to stop others from dying (and who would in reality?). These questions alway be to sound moral when in practice the day to day decisions we make place very different value on the lives of different people based on the lottery of where they are born. I'm sure many Ukrainians on the front line are actively trying to kill 1,000 Russians to save their children for example.

Except NHS money was never going to be spent on another country’s health system.

Sartre · 03/11/2026 10:07

I’d kill anyone if it meant saving my DC.

ZeStreoving · 03/11/2026 10:37

without hesitation that button would be pressed.

I think the person who has lost a child knows more than you.

So glad you said that. It was one of the rudest, most insensitive responses I’ve seen here.

Munchyseeds2 · 03/11/2026 12:34

I didn't see this when you could vote but yes I would without a doubt!

Specialneedsnightmare · 03/11/2026 12:43

No i wouldn't. I couldn't live with myself.

Spiffingdarling88 · 03/11/2026 13:11

Absolutely, the other 10,000 mean nothing to me.

Parky04 · 03/11/2026 13:17

Blimey, there are a lot of potential murderers on this thread!

Presumably you have a moral compass. Or maybe not.

Yes but only for my DC, I would suffer extreme anguish for the rest of my life but yeah I don’t think I would be able to stop myself.

Edited

Same

Yeah, imagine calling a bereaved mother’s opinion utter bullshit because she says she wouldn’t commit murder in a stupid hypothetical Facebook-esque scenario. 🤨

But others know better. They’d blow up the entire world and slaughter every last survivor for their DC. True love.

InterIgnis · 03/11/2026 15:13

I’m not sure why anyone is getting upset about a hypothetical scenario, as if it’s ever going to happen.

Some would be prepared to do it, others wouldn’t. Some who say they wouldn’t, actually would, and some who says they would, wouldn’t. No one knows what they would do in the event that the unthinkable becomes reality.

People can only speak for themselves. Everyone reacts differently. For instance, someone who's child is murdered might want the perpetrator to receive the death penalty in countries where that is an option, and others in the same situation might not want that.

Although I do find it hard to believe that a person who could save their child's life by killing 10,000 random strangers would deliberately choose instead to let their child die. Obviously, in real life, that's not the way things work, and people have to accept how things are and work through their grief and pain.

But in a hypothetical situation where it's possible, I would be surprised if people didn't value their child more highly than 10,000 strangers.

If I gave you a knife and said go out and kill 10,000 babies and children to save your own child, would you do it? Or torture 10,000 puppies. Or bury their own mother alive.

I’d struggle to believe any person who truly loves their child wouldn’t do all three of these heinous things!
