Altercation in carpark

Icecreamsundaz · 05/10/2026 13:30

I was in a supermarket carpark, I had put my baby in her carseat and had just loaded my groceries in the boot. A car parked in the parent and child space next to me and an older couple got out, early 70s I would guess, able bodied, no kids with them
I said "sorry do you realise thats s parent and child space" and I pointed to the markings.
Well his response was very rude in tone "I came here to do my shopping, not to dance around" ?? "It should be first come first served " and they stormed off. I was a bit taken aback, I said loudly but they were a bit away at this point so not sure if they heard me "god id hate to be so ignorant". I took a picture of their car. Not really sure what I was going to do with it, thinking I would think about it and perhaps report to management. I got into my car
The next he was at my window "you took a photo, its illeageal to take photos of other people's property, delete it." I ensured my doors were locked, he stood behind my car so I couldn't reverse out, she was at my windscreen taking photos of me. Eventually they moved and I got out.
Maybe I shouldn't have said anything but there were loads of other places they could have parked but the parent and child spaces are limited. Its very frustrating when I've all my kids and can't find a free parent and child space because people like this who dont need them take them and they don't give a shit

You can have your opinion, no one’s said you can’t, but you are actually expecting people to change their behaviours for you and to comply with your Spanish Inquisition.

Newsflash: they don’t have to!

Did your DH park in a P&C space today and got told off by the OP?

Lol, is that supposed to be a burn? I’ll tell DH he can claim his pension if you think he’s early 70s!

If by “my” rules you mean basic social standards that help make things as fair and considerate as possible for everyone, then yes, I do wish more people followed them. Unfortunately, the “me, me, me” mentality seems to be increasingly common.

Loveofeclairs · 05/10/2026 19:51

I’ve tried that. And when I returned there was someone parked close enough to the line on one side that there was no way to get my baby into the seat. Luckily I managed to get both children into the car from one side. What should I have done if there were cars parked on both sides? Ask my toddler to hold the baby while I reversed out enough to open the rear doors?

I’d love it if the p&c spaces were at the far end of the car park. There would surely be fewer selfish people using them.

That would be really good actually , they should make them less appealing 👍

Is that meant to be funny? I can see you are trying but you really aren't

But you are.

I think if OP is going to get this upset about it she should absolutely get delivery.

As should the cf septugenarians

Parking in a neighbours spot, is a bit of a selfish thing to do. Parking in a parent and child bay with no child is also a selfish thing to do. Neither are illegal.. doesn’t make it right though.

Nobody has any idea from looking at people whether it's a selfish thing to do or not.

A young fit looking man in gym gear with no children in a sports car?

The bays are merely suggested as such with parent and child spaces; a guide, not enforceable by ‘management’, unfortunately. You cannot win a battle of wits with the unarmed,so telling people like this off is pointless.

allthingsinmoderation · 05/10/2026 20:33

Im sorry you got this response. I think it reasonable you reminded this person that the bays were marked and reserved for parents with children. The follow up was unwise and there response was awful.
Having said that, this happened to me once ,iwas in the other persons position not yours! My child aged 14 yrs had broken her leg and was in full leg cast hip to ankle, she was feeling down about not being able to join in normal life and asked to go to the supermarket to choose a book and some art supplies,we couldnt use disabled spaces as her disability was temporary. Anyway we went at non busy time in the evening and we parked in a parent and child space, someone stopped me and said these spaces were for parent with young children. I apologised and explained my dilema . The person accepted that ,but i felt guilty and uneasy so i asked in store wether it was accpetable and they said yes and that they dont police the spaces and hope people use common sense and curtesy. Some people are sticklers ,some people think the guideline dont apply to them and some people are just trying to get by.

Just wait, someone will soon tell you that he probably has an invisible disability and has just missed out on a blue badge 😂

I thought we were still talking about the older people that the OP accosted today. That guy is probably a selfish dick, yeah.

I was replying to a poster suggesting we shouldn’t assume that anyone is misusing the spaces. When we all know but for some unknown reason people will fight to the death to defend every persons right to selfishness. Why is it so hard to say yep , those spaces are not for me and move along a few metres.

DonnyBurrito · 05/10/2026 20:37

BobbleBear · 05/10/2026 18:35

I often park in the P&C spaces in my local Aldi as they’re always empty in the middle of the day. 🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s mainly because DH is in his 70’s and can easily get breathless during a shopping trip so I like to park near to the entrance. If you said anything to me I wouldn’t bother trying to pacify you but I would likely ignore you.

If going an extra 10 metres across an Aldi car park because I'd not been able to park right next to the door made me breathless... I'd probably stay at home. Surely you can manage to do a food shop on your own? Why you dragging him out when he's in such poor condition?

It’s hilarious. Everyone’s entitled to do as they please unless it directly affects them it appears!

Synesthesia · 05/10/2026 20:40

These kind of arseholes need to be called out for the dickish selfish behaviour, you were right to do so. What a bunch of price dickheads.

Laura95167 · 05/10/2026 20:44

Its not a crime to photo their car. Send it to supermarket, but i doubt anything will happen

IzzyGone · 05/10/2026 20:45

I hope you smiled for the camera

they clearly didn't feel comfortable with you voicing your freedom of speech concerning their life choices

Why should anything happen? They have not broken any law, by parking there.

DonnyBurrito · 05/10/2026 20:47

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 05/10/2026 17:51

LOL I agree. I can't believe anyone thinks it's OK for a non disabled person to park in a disabled zone, but NOT OK for a disabled person to park in a parent and child bay!

🤨 Wha? I literally said neither is okay. And there are car parks where people who do not have children with them get fined for using the spaces, Parrs Wood in Manchester for example. Doesn't matter if you've got an invisible illness and a BB or not, if you've not got a child with you, you drive past those spaces if you know full well they're not allocated for you. If one in your zone isn't available, tough shite! Take it on the chin and find a regular spot like most considerate human beings. It's really not rocket science.

Well let's list the possible reasons.

They enjoy a shopping trip together.

He's desperate to get out of the house for a while.

He's not safe to leave in the house on his own.

He wants to choose his own food.

You get the drift. Illness does not mean you should be confined to your own home, it probably means it's even more important to get out when you can.

...you are aware there are other opportunities to get out of the house other than to visit Aldi?

This posters husband is not special.

EdinaTheConfessor · 05/10/2026 20:56

Exact same scenario happened to me yesterday. Parked in a P&C space (with kids) and an older couple without kids parked in the space next to me.

What did I do? I barely registered it as a non event and assumed if they took the space it is because they needed it for extra space/proximity to doors/whatever.

My mum is disabled and she likes to choose her own fruit and veg sometimes.

Why do you think she shouldn’t be allowed to enjoy normal activities like shopping?

For her, a grocery shop is a trip out, a chance to have a drive, a coffee and some treats from the supermarket.

Theroadt · 05/10/2026 21:03

nomas · 05/10/2026 14:05

They’re early 70s, I wouldn’t have said anything.

My mum is early 70s, she needs to have the car door fully open before she can get out.

If all the P&C bays are full, just head to the back of the car park where there are lots of bays, it’s no biggie.

You and your kids are much more mobile than them if you don’t have disabilities.

Agreed. My father is 97 and when I drive him I use his disabled badge so he can be close as possible, but other times eg when my ankle was in plaster my husband parked in a child space so I could get out easily. I think OP you made a fuss when it wasn’t your business.

You are aware that people like doing normal wveryday stuff? Browsing different foods.

Last year I had extensive chemo, I did enjoy a trip out to Tesco to shop (at quiet times) to browse and buy what I fancied!

Maybe you don’t like shopping? But many do.
