Altercation in carpark

Icecreamsundaz · 05/10/2026 13:30

I was in a supermarket carpark, I had put my baby in her carseat and had just loaded my groceries in the boot. A car parked in the parent and child space next to me and an older couple got out, early 70s I would guess, able bodied, no kids with them
I said "sorry do you realise thats s parent and child space" and I pointed to the markings.
Well his response was very rude in tone "I came here to do my shopping, not to dance around" ?? "It should be first come first served " and they stormed off. I was a bit taken aback, I said loudly but they were a bit away at this point so not sure if they heard me "god id hate to be so ignorant". I took a picture of their car. Not really sure what I was going to do with it, thinking I would think about it and perhaps report to management. I got into my car
The next he was at my window "you took a photo, its illeageal to take photos of other people's property, delete it." I ensured my doors were locked, he stood behind my car so I couldn't reverse out, she was at my windscreen taking photos of me. Eventually they moved and I got out.
Maybe I shouldn't have said anything but there were loads of other places they could have parked but the parent and child spaces are limited. Its very frustrating when I've all my kids and can't find a free parent and child space because people like this who dont need them take them and they don't give a shit

I’d have been annoyed too, OP. And I’d have said something. And then refused to let it go when they were rude. However, I’m also aware that sometimes I should keep my mouth shut — not because these people don’t need calling out but because nine times out of ten, they don’t care and saying something makes no difference. Then you just end up with things escalating and feeling rubbish afterwards. I’m not sure what the answer is — probably to say something once and, if they don’t care, smile sweetly at them while performing voodoo spells under your breath. (That sounds flippant but I genuinely do wish I could sometimes let things go rather than always needing to be right/wanting the last word.)

Hopefully it's stopped you from parking in spaces not designated for you, then. If I parked in one of the gazillion disabled bays I'm sure someone would think I was being a twat and give me some shit for it. It's not illegal for me, a none disabled person, to park in a disabled bay... but I think it's cuntish to go about acting like I'm more important than anyone else and that I should be the exception to the rule. You were right to get told off.

Did you actually type that with a straight face?

A blue badge holder is ABSOLUTELY entitled to park in a P&C bay. Try telling the staff that a BB holder has parked in a P&B bay, they would soon tell that person who is behaving “cuntishly”. And you would be right to get told off.

LOL I agree. I can't believe anyone thinks it's OK for a non disabled person to park in a disabled zone, but NOT OK for a disabled person to park in a parent and child bay!

Sounds like they were part of the wave of the first Gen E (ages 70 to death, who were young in the 60s)

The second wave are the 27 to 35 year olds

Generation Entitled

Let me guess. Everyone except your own generation 🤣?

bowchicawowwow · 05/10/2026 17:53

It’s not my job to police the supermarket car park. I leave that to Asda. You will never get the resolution you want from these encounters and you just end up turning it over in your mind all day

stichguru · 05/10/2026 17:53

It's perfectly legal to park in a parent and child space without a child. They are not legally enforceable.

Ladyfromthehill · 05/10/2026 17:56

EscCtrl · 05/10/2026 17:29

If their disability fell short of a blue badge the I'd expect them to say they have difficulty walking. If I were disabled and someone accused me of not deserving a space then I'd take great delight in telling them about my disability and winning the argument. There was a prolonged argument. They did not bring up disability as a justification. That inclines me to believe they were not disabled.

But OP has no business in questioning people about their health and no one has to tell a Karen busybody their health problems just because she is riding on a high moral horse or is having a bad day. I would never tell some pesky idiot what is wrong with my health on a parking lot out of all places- out of principle.

I'm waiting for a PP to suggest they should show the OP their medical records, rather than snap back at her.

No joke, I’ve been asked this !! The problem with the parking police is that they don’t even wait until you’re out of the car before they challenge, and as I pulled into the spot a woman ran up to tell me I was in a disabled space. I said yes, I know, I’m disabled and flashed the badge. She asked to have a closer look at it and I refused - no-one other than a traffic warden or police officer is entitled to handle it because there are personal details on it. Not a word of a lie, when I refused she asked if I had any ‘doctors letters’ to prove I was disabled. I laughed all the way around the supermarket

The onus would be on OP to.prove that what she said was true or very specifically in the public interest.

The old couple would only need to prove that a statement had been made, identifying them, and that they had suffered a loss (financial, reputation, or other) because of it.

If someone else wrote anything germane on their car in lipstick then OPs post would be regarded as contributory.

That they parked in the children bays which they did . I have no idea what you think the op had to prove but a photo she took proves that alone .libel is extremely hard to prove even when it’s real , and box him this case is not . So again libel for what ?

Rosscameasdoody · 05/10/2026 18:01

Imdunfer · 05/10/2026 17:41

Misuse would include using them when you have only nimble and mobile older children with you though, wouldn't it? That happens all the time.

Those lacking in flexibility have far more moral entitlement to the space than those parents, surely?

Edited

I’ve lost count of the number of parents I see rocking up to a P&C space and leaving the kids in the car !!

ZoeCM · 05/10/2026 18:02

OP, if two burly young men had parked there, would you have confronted them? Would you have taken photos of their car? Or did you just want to intimidate an elderly couple?

No this again 🙄

Queuing is not legally enforceable either but I bet you wouldn’t be happy if someone cut in front of you. It’s called being considerate.

Icecreamsundaz · 05/10/2026 15:39

How do you know they had kids back in the day?? Plus carseats werent mandatory back in yhe day. If they didn't know the could have just said. My initial encounter was polite

Well, obviously I don't know whether they had children of their own, but at their age, whether they had kids or not, the point was, they likely managed without needing special parking spots.

I'm younger than them, only 62. I had four children under six with no special spots and car seats were absolutely mandatory. I'd get the pram out, put the youngest two in it, then unbuckle the older two and they each held onto one side of the pram. Then, getting back in, oldest two in the car, then I'd load the younger two into the car, fold the pram and pop it in the boot. Totally doable.

Is it nice to have slightly wider spots? Yes. Are you going to be okay without one? Also yes. The same way you would manage if the shops were busy and the spots were full, being used by others with children. You'd just manage or park a bit further away for more space.

You managed to miss the point though. When you decide to escalate a situation, it's a choice. You never know how the other person will react though. The extra comment and the photo meant you found out. Even in my most pissed off state, I'd never take that chance, I'd fume internally, but there are some very unstable people in society, so I wouldn't be risking escalating a situation like that and especially not with a child with me.

In life, you can be right, and it's clear you really want to be right, but it's also important to be safe. In this case, you really did risk your safety and that of your child so you could be right.

So many what ifs and what abouts on this thread.

If they were disabled or struggling to get out of the car they should have said so. That would have been the easiest way to shut OP up and make her feel bad for commenting. As it stands, the evidence points to them being entitled twats.

Sirzy · 05/10/2026 18:07

P and C spaces are offered as a curtesy by supermarkets. If a space is free and you need it use it, if there isn’t one free park elsewhere.

getting into an argument over a parking space is pointless. Unless your a parking warden don’t concern yourself with others just focus on yourself

Rosscameasdoody · 05/10/2026 18:08

SilverSwiftie · 05/10/2026 17:35

I'm on your side, OP. It can be impossible to get a car seat into a car without the door being fully open and p&c spaces are very often misused. People round here often speak to the store about inappropriate parking, and I believe some car parks do issue tickets. Maybe that's what you could do next time.

Most supermarkets have nothing to do with the car park their customers use. They’re operated by a car park company. Sometimes they operate a different system for P&C spaces and if you park in one without children you will be subject to a parking charge. To do this, the car park company have to post very clear signage that the normal rules for public P&C spaces does not apply and that a charge will be made for parking inappropriately. Unless this is the case, this couple were not doing anything wrong in parking in a P&C space - they are concessions and not legally enforceable.

As an aside, it can be just as impossible for an elderly person to get into a car seat without the door being fully open. There are no parking concessions offering wider spaces for them and a blue badge isn’t always an option. What are they supposed to do ? You can’t legislate out need.

Lilylakeside · 05/10/2026 18:09

Imdunfer · 05/10/2026 16:59

Parent and child spaces are there for a reason just as disabled spaces are, they were born out of necessity

The problem is that there's also a necessity for wider spaces for people who have difficulty getting in and out of the car without the door wide open, yet are not disabled enough to qualify for a blue badge. That necessity isn't being met if people aren't prepared to share the wider P&C bays.

I'd take a bet that anyone over 70 needs a wider bay way more than people with a lithe 7 year old in the car.

But op does have a baby, that's the whole point of this thread!

Which doesn’t outrank this couple. P&C spaces are not legally enforceable. OP had no business challenging them - especially as she already had her parking space.

OP already had her space but she felt entitled to tackle the elderly couple for the greater good of all parents 🤣🤣🤣

Imoldenoughtorememberbagpuss · 05/10/2026 18:11

I would have just ignored it and carried on with my day.
I probably wouldn't even have noticed them as I'd be too busy trying to get my son's wheelchair into the car while dealing with his meltdown.
I just see confrontation as wasted time. Life is too short to arse about with people.

Onlytoolsandsauces · 05/10/2026 18:11

Icecreamsundaz · 05/10/2026 16:57

The parent and child spaces were full
The disabled spaces were not full.
The regular spaces were not full

So basically you don't think you are being unreasonable given the level of defence.

WHY ASK THEN??!!
