AIBU to be shocked by the cost of four pizzas and basics?

Guess how much my shopping basket cost:

2 x margarita pizzas & 2 x pepperoni pizzas (supermarket brand - in a box tho, not the cheaper cellophane wrapped ones)
2 x tubes toothpaste (oral B)
2 x tubs Vicks Vapo-rub

I have been to the doctor and stopped at Co-op as I needed a few things missed off the weekly shop.

I buy Heinz ketchup…

I think there's a lesson to be made from this thread.

Question: if you bought a hotdog from a hotdog stand would you only have the ketchup if it was definitely heinz?

If you would just sod it and put any old ketchup on, why does it have to be heinz at home?

Even people who complain it doesn't taste the same and they wouldn't buy own brand for home, wouldnt generally blink and turn their nose up at a plain bottle of eating out.

It's a fascinating thought experiment.

Also it’s gold for stopping mossies from biting!

is it? Thanks for the tip, I am stocking up right now!

TurboGirl2 · 05/10/2026 14:48

£5 for a supermarket pizza is a lot, the pizza express ones are £2.75 on half price currently at sainsburys. The other bits don't surprise me.

£36.50

I honestly had to check.

I know Vicks and Toothpaste aren’t things you buy all the time but still.

Seems like the right price to me…🤷‍♀️

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 05/10/2026 14:50

On this side of the pond I pay about $8/each for a tube of Sensodyne Clinical and about $10/each for my Nano Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste. My DH and DS also have prescription toothpaste gel @ $25/each.

Because why buy the cheap stuff if you prefer the a particular brand…you don’t get that luxury at a hotdog stand.

The preference might be:

  1. hotdog with heinz
  2. hotdog with generic brand
  3. hot dog plain

By the logic of getting the generic brand because you still like it with it but it is cheaper, you might as well do away with it altogether because you’ll still like the hotdog and it is cheaper without anything 🤷‍♀️

Anyway I buy heinz (though rarely use it) and lurpak because that’s what I like, and for the sake of a couple of pounds I would rather have what I like than what will do. People work hard for their money, and so they should buy what they like as well as what that can make do with.

Kat70 · 05/10/2026 14:56

You need to buy supermarket own brand toothpaste and vaporub.

If that's the case, you can't complain about the price then!

There's a trade off in terms of what you are prepared to compromise on, and why.

I see zero added value to me from lurpak or heinz. They add nothing to my life experience.

If you feel you want to pay more for something you perceive to be better, I'm on board with it, but you pay for that branding and advertising over and above the ingredients.

I didn’t complain though…neither did the poster you were replying to earlier in the chain

I buy branded if I like it more, and non-branded if I like that more…I would quibble over a couple of pounds a week on my shopping, I would rather get the stuff I like

moto748e · 05/10/2026 15:15

I haven't TRFT, but toothpaste is something that varies wildly in price, isn't it? As it's just mostly chalk, I'm not convinced that cheapo toothpaste is any worse than fancy stuff.

And of course Lidl/Aldi >> Co-op.

tokennamechange · 05/10/2026 15:15

It is insanely expensive but tbh if you choose to get stuff last minute from the co-op what do you expect?

Toothpaste is hardly some sort of unexpected expense that nobody could possibly foresee they might need! Buy some whenever you get to the last half of the tube. Same with Vicks, if you know you get through loads of the stuff (im with the poster still using a tub i bought when I moved house ten years ago) - then stock up when you go to home bargains or savers etc. None of these items are huge so dont take up loads of space, it's always worth keeping a spare ready to go to avoid the "need it now" Mark up.

If you ever go to Lidl get their 99p toothpaste. On Yuka, Oral B get a poor rating and 41/100 while Lidl Triple Protection cheapie brand gets 91/100 and an excellent rating. I admit though I am obsessed with scanning everything in supermarkets with the Yuka app 🫣

Nofeckingway · 05/10/2026 15:43

Is Lurpak better than real butter ? Like Kerrygold or similar. No idea how much it is and why is it so expensive.

CasperGutman · 05/10/2026 15:46

Premium own brand pizzas maybe £6 each. Toothpaste maybe £3 if it's the basic Oral B one, but could be much more if it's a fancy type. Vick's £4.50. About £40 total.

I prefer West Country butter. Lurpak has lactic acid which some people like.

Wingingitbestican · 05/10/2026 15:51

Co-op is quite pricey 😂

The meal deals they do (curry/pizza etc ) are pretty good though

LBFseBrom · 05/10/2026 15:51

Co-op pizzas are excellent and they do some very good deals.

ChillWith · 05/10/2026 15:53

Merryoldgoat · 05/10/2026 13:32

It is usually but it was on special so half the usual price.

I was doing online shopping yesterday and normal toothpaste was coming up at £6+ unless you had a loyalty card 😬

Nope. Real butter is far cheaper and tastes much better.

Buying branded anything is just funding the marketing industry, and I don't support evil enterprises 🤣

(Apart from Gu chocolate puddings, I am sure they don't use any marketing people and they all regularly rescue kittens)

Lidl do a great protein version, I like them anyway!

CeciliaMars · 05/10/2026 15:56

Go to Aldi!

I always buy an own brand, but fancy range pizza, it's my Saturday night treat.
I then add anchovies, capers and olives, and make a dip for the crusts
