Guess how much my shopping basket cost:

2 x margarita pizzas & 2 x pepperoni pizzas (supermarket brand - in a box tho, not the cheaper cellophane wrapped ones)
2 x tubes toothpaste (oral B)
2 x tubs Vicks Vapo-rub

I have been to the doctor and stopped at Co-op as I needed a few things missed off the weekly shop.

What are you using it for? Is it some new dodgy sex thing I’m unaware of ? 😂

I can assure it’s the least sexy I’ve ever felt. My husband rubs it on my back, then I on his, then we swear about how slimy it is.

£36.50

I honestly had to check.

I know Vicks and Toothpaste aren’t things you buy all the time but still.

is that it?
What's so outrageous about that?

The only place where I find cheaper toothpaste is Aldi. Everywhere else is just expensive.
so 4 pizzas, toothpaste and vics, what exactly were you expecting to pay.

There is a huge difference in the price of different types of toothpaste that brands provide so you can’t use that as a reference- I could buy “Colgate” for £1.50 or £10 depending on what time of toothpaste I bought.

Yes, it varies so hugely, depending on the exact type, the shop and the time you buy it. I remember being absolutely horrified - actually audibly gasped - when they were wanting almost £7 for a tube of toothpaste in Asda. It was Colgate, but not the fancier stuff.

Then again, Asda seem to suspiciously increase prices dramatically for a couple of weeks so that they can be 'half price' on 'rollback' a few weeks later - and Colgate seems to be one of their favourites for this.

I just always go to Home Bargains now, for our family toothpaste (one likes Colgate and two like Aquafresh) and it's always a quid or two every time, no silly dramas.

I don’t know - it just felt expensive

I was going to say £40 so I was pretty close, not sure about the cost of Vicks as I probably buy one tub every 20 years 😂 so… once in my adult life!

shellyleppard · 05/10/2026 14:20

@Merryoldgoat let me know when you find it Lol

When you have three people with the shittest immune systems it’s invaluable. I’m in the midst of a shitty chest infection and covering myself in it is all that’s stopped my cough making me wet myself.

Also it’s gold for stopping mossies from biting!

Lifeomars · 05/10/2026 14:21

I sometimes feel i need to lie down in a darkened room after I have been shopping.

Do you not have a home bargains/pound shop near you?

they’re brilliant for toiletries and household cleaning stuff

We have a home bargains opening opp my work this month. Joy of joys! And it has a cafe too.

Buying branded anything is just funding the marketing industry, and I don't support evil enterprises 🤣

(Apart from Gu chocolate puddings, I am sure they don't use any marketing people and they all regularly rescue kittens)

I'm not quite as extreme as you Grin but brands really have to work especially hard for us to even slightly consider buying them. If they're noticeably much better quality and/or taste much nicer, we'll choose them; but the big brands that advertise constantly on TV would dearly love you to assume that they are the assured quality standard, and that only povvos have to stoop so low (often quite literally) to buy the nasty inferior rubbish own-brands... which are very frequently actually much better and nicer, or at least pretty much the same.

Heinz, Bisto and Lurpak in particular can get right in the bin.

That's about the same as would be here in New Zealand too I think. Actually may be cheaper for you. Used to be the a pound was worth 2 dollars but our dollar is really weak atm.

Your life is about to get cheaper!

home bargains is definitely the best of all of them and usually the cheapest. Not a huge fan of their cafes (though fine for drinks)

catmothertes1 · 05/10/2026 14:29

The Coop tend to be pretty expensive in general. Also,I find that things like branded toothpaste are really expensive in supermarkets. I tend to stock up in shops like the BM Store,Home Bargains,Semichem or Farmfoods.

I guessed 30 odd. Prices are extortionate. We only buy morrisons create your own pizzas as they taste nicer and better value I think!

iamnotalemon · 05/10/2026 14:33

You can get oral B toothpaste in Poundland and other cheaper shops - doesn’t help if you are desperate and need it now of course.

Completely agree re. Lurpak!

I used to buy Heinz ketchup pre-kids, and then they started going through tons of the stuff and I accidentally turned into my mother ("how much? Do they think I'm made of money??") 🤣

theblame · 05/10/2026 14:35

Yeah I definitely wouldn’t pay that
4 x nice Aldi pizzas - £16
2 x XL packs oral b toothpaste £6 on amazon (125ml packs)
Boots own brand vapour rub £4
£26

i hunt bargains though and have a back stock of toothpaste etc all bought at the cheapest price

Merryoldgoat · 05/10/2026 14:36

I’m clearly going to need to start being a bit of a more discerning shopper. I’ll seek out a Home Bargains and a Savers and see how I get on…

We bought a pizza oven. We use it all year round. It's paid for itself probably three times over now.

Problem solved.

£5 for two tubes but I bought two because it was kn special. I was going for Sensodyne and it was SEVEN THIRTY FIVE FOR ONE TUBE!!

It is often £3.95 for 75ml in Tesco. I always stock up then.

Woodeny · 05/10/2026 14:38

Coop pizzas used to be the best on the high street but the quality and range had really plummeted of late which is sad.

Who the fuck buys lurpak and heinz ketchup still?

You may as well burn your money.

GnomeDePlume · 05/10/2026 14:40

Asda would have been 22.36 or 14.34 if you had gone for own brand toothpaste and vapour rub.

No need for blackmarket vicks.
