She is absolutely right isn't she? Discussing the triple lock pension challenge and instead focusing on getting people into work. Do you agree with her ? Working 3 or 6 or 9 hours to then top up with benefits isn't the way forward (not including disabilities in here )

Of course, but don't you think the lower paid jobs should enable people to support themselves w/o needing UC top ups? If they are working full time that is.

Yes they should be able to support themselves but unfair that they get enough handouts to afford nice cars, holidays etc, free entrys to everything luxuries they wouldn't usually have and luxuries others on slightly higher pay but no UC can't afford.

Handouts, nice cars, holidays etc

Do you believe everything you read?

DeftGoldHedgehog · Today 10:51

It sounds like something one of her colleagues said a few years ago. "Why don't they just get a better job?"

You see nice cars and holidays being handed out?

Which benefits are those?

SnappyPenguin · Today 11:01

They need to make sure jobs are paying a living wage first. Plenty of people work full time and still need a UC top up.

Those benefits only exist in ops head and the right wing media.

I agree take responsibility for your own life

It’s a tricky one, I work part time due to health issues but would rather the money go into better health care to enable people to work more.

Edited

I think this is a very good point.

She isn't wrong, but after the Conservatives dismantled much of the UK manufacturing sector and then up no effort into replacement industries, there aren't a large number of well paying jobs about. Tax credits brought in by Labour then underpinned a low wage economy where companies are making a killing.

MrsBatshitRatshit · Today 11:14

Will Kemi be encouraging her party's corporate donors to reduce their contributions to the party in order to pay their employees better?

TemperanceWest · Today 11:17

Nope just everything I see.

I know what you mean.

My next door neighbours boast all the time about how they are gaming the system and their brand new BMW they got for free because they pretend to be disabled. I am guessing you have a similar experience?

Zzxzzz · Today 11:19

I know families who don't work and love using their benefits (other people's money) for deliveroo

Sadgirl101 · Today 11:20

Sure. She's right. As soon as the government decided to pay me sufficiently for my full time, graduate-level public sector job, that I don't need them to top me up in order to feed my kids, I'll be happy to stop claiming.

coffeeagogo · Today 11:28

Show me the jobs first and then show me a sensible path to a transition, including access to eduction and to skills based training that people can afford and then I might get excited.
All these politicians (of all stripes) do is spout sound bites. There is never a sensible plan that lasts beyond getting elected, then it’s all the previous parties fault that they can’t meet their promises…. And don’t get me started on Mr. Farage and what he would do if he just had the chance to show us.
The reality is that there aren’t jobs, never mind well paid ones, I have teens that would love a Saturday job, but they can’t even get a job washing hair as it’s too punitive to hire a young person. They’ve tried retail, cafes, local hairdressers, apart from babysitting they can’t get their first foot into the working world.

I work full time and get UC.
I’m a single parent.
My ExH manages to game the CMS system, owning companies, being the Director but living off “loans” from his children apparently
He is on his second tribunal appeal to reduce the £15pw he has been assessed to pay for 2 children.
Until there is some interest on addressing that the Benefit bill will continue.
My ex should be paying really £300 pm, if I was getting that I’d not need the top up.

Don’t aim for us, aim for those making it impossible for us.
I am trying to get a better job, however now, for just above minimum wage job descriptions run into pages, they want you to have everything in the world and experience and ideally a degree.
It’s almost impossible to progress.

My own job isn't appallingly paid, but for that I am worked like a dog. I get 20 minutes unpaid lunch and I’m not even able to take that, nor do I go sick due to workload.

For some of us we are working the best we can and are still one small step away from poverty.

Make it cheaper for firms to hire. Cut net zero madness to reduce energy bills. Scrap the TCPA and watch rents fall!

GildedFrames · Today 11:38

50 years ago a decently paying job would pay for a spouse to stay at home and earn nothing and nobody considered them lazy layabouts who should go to work.

BurntBroccoli · Today 11:38

Which well paying jobs?

Ponoka7 · Today 11:39

MyLimeGuide · Today 10:52

My DD looks like that, but my eldest, childfree DD helps her with the cost of holidays, she also buys clothes. She has the children and doesn't ask for expenses. I pay for the youngest's school uniform and most of her clothes, days out and term bus pass. The paternal grandad buys the school shoes and all the family put money in the children's bank accounts. Whenever we have them, we feed them. So life looks great on a UC top up, when in reality, it would just about keep her head above water.
For this plan to work there'd have to be, reasonable paying, full time jobs about and low cost housing. What did the Tories do about those issues during their term? Jeremy Corbyn (I'm not a fan) was laughed at when he said, let's get rid of the gig economy and make work pay. So when all our WC is supporting themselves, we'll be told we'll need even more immigration to do the low paying jobs and that's more HMO contracts for the Tories friend's and we'll be paying for immigrants rather than British permanent residents? Can someone explain why we won't pay for our population, who live in the areas were employment has been decimated, but have a unlimited budget for immigrants? Then explain why the WC, especially in the North, should accept this, when they've just had austerity, but the Tories told their friends to maximise what they claim for asylum accommodation and all the other fake/inflated contracts.

Are you sure that landlords would willingly drop rents? I'm unconvinced

People cant survive doing rubbish jobs for rubbish wages. Years ago , there were proper jobs, with proper conditions and reasonable wages. You cant expect ppl to survive on poor conditions and crap wages. It's impossible to exist like that without getting ill mentally or physically. How can you run on empty..And as for Kemi... she might be going up in the polls but she strikes me as a rather rude, chippy woman and I'm fairly certain if she ever had the weight of PM on her shoulders, we'd soon see the rude attacking behaviour coming out, along with the mean-minded policies and blaming the victims for all the ills conservatives have brought to this country since Thatcher.

Net zero is not causing your bills to be higher.

That would be Tory privatisation of utilities and Tory failure to invest in gas storage.

We need more renewables to become energy independent.

This is the live Grid right now:
