AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

You sound consumed by jealousy and bitterness that they can afford something better than what you have.

I think you'd not BU if it was a couple moving into a council/HA place....but I doubt that would ever happen.

If it is a couple who are buying or private renting a house that size, then they can surely buy/rent whatever size house they want? Hell, I'm a single mum with two kids. I'll never be able to buy even the place I live in now. If I won the lottery, there's a beautiful house that I'd buy - has more bedrooms than we need, but I love the layout, the space and the land it's on. And it would allow me to have family and friends stay over in a way that is pretty difficult now (we live in a very small 3 bed house: one WC/bathroom, one small kitchen, small living room, 2 of the bedrooms are box rooms, no hallways or places to store shoes/coats). Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful every day that I can afford to rent the house I'm in now, but some extra rooms would be amazing!

A family with 4 kids could’ve bought this but they didn’t! It wasn’t a secret sale, any size family could’ve bought it, but they didn’t.

Also, all larger families can’t afford to just buy a large 5 bed detached property you know. The seller might not have had much interest, and this couple were the only ones who put in an offer

Aleveldilemma · 03/10/2026 10:29

You do realise that house are not allocated to people in the UK if they’re not council houses? People can buy whatever house they want and it’s none of your business unless they gazumped you personally?

Eire12 · 03/10/2026 08:02

Obviously the same reason why it annoys me that people selfishly buy two or more houses. Young people have no hope in getting houses when the older generation are being greedy & selfish. This is part of the reason that so many need to emigrate.

Edited

But the couple the OP is talking about are in their late 20s so not “the older generation” and surely with them buying this big expensive 5 bed rather than a smaller less expensive house this gives the other younger people with less money more chance of buying something they can afford…

Bellyblueboy · 03/10/2026 10:32

I live in a four bed alone - what do you think of me and where should I live?

If not, it's none of your beeswax

RatsCatsandPuppies · 03/10/2026 10:38

Why is this anything to do with you? Did this couple trample all over a lovely family with kids in their way into the house?!

dreamingofgoodhair · 02/10/2026 20:10

There are approximately 1000 reasons why a couple may have bought a 5 bedroom house.

Quite, and non of them anyone's business except their own.

Me and OH retired and moved from a 4 bed house to a 5 bed house (different part of the country). We have a bedroom each, I have a sewing room/spare room for guests, we have a music room and a study (we both work remotely very part time). I love it and appreciate we are very very fortunate.

sesquipedalian · 03/10/2026 10:41

OP, clearly you want to condemn couples to living in a small house or flat where they are never able to entertain friends and family. I live in the family house I had when all my DC lived at home - as none of them now live near me, when they visit, I need to have room for them and the DGC to sleep over. Or are you suggesting that once my DC have left home, I should be compelled to live somewhere tiny and never see them? The couple you are so upset about you describe as “in their late twenties” - does it not seem likely that they will soon be having a family? Or are you suggesting they should move house each time they have a new DC so as never to be under-occupying a property? How expensive would that be simply in terms of stamp duty and moving costs? Your post could not be more unreasonable.

It’s bedrooms PLUS 2-3 sitting rooms, 3 if you count the conservatory.

Kindly, stop being a busybody. It is none of yours or anybody else’s business.

It definitely doesn't say that in the OP . I would imagine that a young couple buying a big house will be having dc. Whereas the older generation buying a huge house that they have no need for is pure snootiness. I know such a couple. They had a 4 bed and moved to these new 5 bed houses as they are snobs. What chance have the younger generation of getting on the property ladder?

Generally, it’s quite helpful to read everything op posts, before forming an opinion. Knowledge is power and all that…
That said you sound slightly….unhinged. You’ve zero idea why anyone spends their money. Your rattling on about “snooty and snobby” is nonsensical. You genuinely believe people make the biggest purchase of their lives based solely on what other people think?

And, even if they did do it to be “snobby” what is that to do with you? They can afford it and pay the vast amounts of tax required to purchase it. End of conversation.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 03/10/2026 10:44

We have one child and plan to buy a 4/5 bed. We both WFH and are hoping for an annexe we can rent out and have family to stay in.

WFH supports an excellent life balance for our son, the annexe will support us financially and pay tax, and guests will spend money in the local area too, which depends on tourism, whilst also being a family home, with my son maybe working holiday industry jobs in the future.

We could buy a 3 bed and keep all the money for foreign holidays and private pensions if you prefer though, OP, do let us know.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 03/10/2026 10:47

Perhaps they aspire to have 3-4 children, or sleep in separate bedrooms and need the extra ones for offices or future DC.

I have seen a house (in need of serious work) with five bedrooms. Due to its magnificent location, I would move there (on my own) immediately if I could afford it!

TeenLifeMum · 03/10/2026 10:47

My parents bought a 5 bed house. They wanted the space downstairs and rooms for family to stay - brother visits every year from Canada and we stay with them/my dc stay with them every summer holiday. We have a 4 bed home and I’ve no plans to move when dc leave home.

Englishsenora · 03/10/2026 10:50

LoughboroughBex · 02/10/2026 20:09

My husband and I have bought a 4 bed house, just the two of us with no children planned. We have our bedroom, an office each and then a guest room. If we did want children then a 5th bedroom would be helpful.

It’s absolutely none of your business though and you’re coming off as jealous.

Perhaps we should’ve bought a 5 bed so our dog could have his own room 🤭

Sorry, quoted in error, this is meant for the OP.

@activedough So are you saying you want to buy a five bed house but can’t because they’re all being snapped up by people who don’t need five bedrooms?

If not, you are being unreasonable and illogical. Would you prefer them to buy up all the two/three bed houses instead? Surely most young couples are not looking for five bed houses?

Completelybatshit · 03/10/2026 11:09

This is absolutely none of your business. You say they are in their late twenties, they may be hoping to be the new 20 kids and counting family, or they may love socialising and want to hold loads of house parties, their money, their life choices. How many bedrooms do you have, and how many children?

impressivemuch · 03/10/2026 11:10

Maybe they'll use it to run Swingers Parties...or rent rooms to Ladies of the Night?

OonaStubbs · 03/10/2026 11:13

IMO it is greedy and selfish to live in a house that is larger than you need.

IT creates a demand for large properties where 2 or 3 smaller houses that could house normal families.

BunnyLake · 03/10/2026 11:16

Morecoffeeneedef · 02/10/2026 20:09

It's hard to find a buyer for a big house these days. That couple living somewhere smaller wouldn't mean that a family would get the 5 bed.

This does seem to be the case. The big houses are harder to sell than two or three beds where I am. I think I will have to wait a long time before mine sells and I sometimes wish we’d gone smaller. Twenty plus year’s ago though I would have said bigger houses got snapped up.

Mokel · 03/10/2026 11:17

OP

Why not keep your bloody ignorant comments to yourself??????

People who think they can dictate what size house households need without looking at their lifestyle and hobbies piss me right off.

Another thing - grow up
