Colleagues came into work poorly and now I’m getting sick, and I’m due to go away this weekend.

My colleagues have had stinking colds this week. I’ve been saying all week to stay away from me as I’m away this weekend but they’ve not listened and now I’m starting to get poorly.

Snuffly nose, sore throat, headache, I’m exhausted.

My issue is I’m meant to be going away tomorrow, I’m flying on a long weekend to Denmark.

AIBU to dose up and still go? There’s no way I would get a doctor to say I can’t travel, I feel crappy but can probably muster for the weekend.

I used to and still do hate this. When people have a very heavy cold.
At work I blame the sickness policies. They can be so stringent that if you are ill you have to go to work. Which is stupid. All you will do is make everyone else ill. You are unlikely to do anything constructively useful. That, or they are people who have cried wolf and run out of sick leave so have to come in, now they really are ill.

I hate sitting on a train and someone like that sits next to me. I have to get up and move. But impossible if the train is heaving.

Relatives. For some reason in my family being ill does not mean you stay away or cancel. No. Share the disease. From flu to heavy coughs and colds.

It really is crap.

You've likely got one of the new variants of Covid such as XFG - they are rife at the moment

The people I know who’ve had Covid very recently have been too ill to work. NOT as bad as flu but def a day or two in bed feeling utterly exhausted along with regular cold symptoms.

Just because cases have rocketed in the last couple of weeks with an 80% increase in hospital admissions. There’s a virulent strain going around. Maybe it’s Covid maybe it’s a cold. To be honest these days I consider Covid a bad cold. Doesn’t really matter what she has. She’s either well enough to go or she isn’t. If she does go wearing a mask on the plane would be nice regardless

The Uk health security agency have not classified the current strain as a virulent strain.

Good grief man up.

Ok, ok - you win! My kids are older and I wfh so I accept I’m likely out of touch with grim reality. I havent been sick in years. OP’s situation would be a big deal to me and I would be testing for covid and thinking about rescheduling to avoid infecting someone elderly on the plane.

OP - Vick’s first defence is good though. Im sure it’s helped me avoid a lot of colds even when ive been around people literally coughing in my face

You're definitely out of touch. Nobody is testing for covid and isolating these days. Life goes on.

Isthisright220 · Today 09:14

Tbf I’ve had a cold after someone sneezed on me in the gp surgery. It was awful and I was also away. Give the op a break

Livelovebehappy · Today 09:15

Just go, and dose up on meds - paracetamol, cold and flu remedies etc.

i imagine they are if they work with the elderly

borborygmus1 · Today 09:17

Regarding OTC meds:

Paracetamol
Ibuprofen
Nasal steroids eg. Beconase for nasal congestion/sinusitis
Difflam throat spray

The above has got me through almost anything
For nasal congestion you can use sudofed spray but I wouldn't use decongestant for more than a dose or 2. Nothing helps with cough though.

Doubt it. Most care homes and care agencies are short staffed and old people are vaccinated.

You should definitely go, dose yourself up and make the best of it.
Everyone in my work, DHs work (teacher!), both DDs schools have colds the last couple of weeks, it’s crazy. DH and me have been suffering this week, I have managed to work but luckily can work at home so have not gone on site to inflict myself on anyone.
I think if you’re able to WFH when you have a cold you should, but people who can’t have to get on with it really unless they’re actually too sick to work, colds are a part of life unfortunately.

DottysCollywobbles · Today 09:24

Not all colds are equal! Yes, anyone can power through sneezing and nose-blowing, but the type of cold that starts with a worsening sore throat and then gives you shivers and a temperature, a head like a pumpkin and having to sit up in bed all night with tissues stuffed up your nose to stem the tide - utterly miserable.

Ok, i didn’t say they had. 🤷‍♀️. Regardless of the official classification the nhs on the shop floor are reporting a very notable surge in cases. My point about it doesn’t really matter whether it is or not stands. Apart from explaining to the OP that it could be why she feels particularly rough.

Lots of people telling the OP it’s just a cold and you’re not asking them how they know. Truth is nobody knows for sure (and it doesn’t matter). Official advice even if you test positive for covid is to go about your usual routine if you feel well enough with no need to isolate.

Mommommommymom · Today 09:37

It’s a cold. Go.
i don’t understand why you’re so angry with your colleagues, do you except them to stay home from work and lose money , so you don’t get ill? When you are happy to go and “infect others” so you can go on your trip ?

I see no reason why you should cancel , I wouldn’t - it’s a common cold - but you are hypocritical when you consider the way you have spoken about colleagues

The Autumn roll out started on 1st Oct, so not many care home residents will have had their vaccine yet.
People do still test. My sister has lots of tests sitting at home (due to her work), felt proper rough this week and tested +ve.
Vulnerable people do still like to know of the risks so they (or their carers) can make informed decisions.

IwanttoWFH · Today 09:47

We can work from home but only one day a week. We would never be allowed to take a week WFH for a cold. You’d either be expected to come in (and spread it to everyone) or call in sick.

I’ve had a cold this week. I had to go into the office as I wasn’t going to call in sick. I dosed myself up and sat in the corner, away from as many people as possible. I washed my hands regularly, sneezed into a tissue etc etc. Other people in the office also have it, as do people on the train and the tube. You can’t expect everyone to stay home when they have a cold.

Dose yourself up with cold and flu tablets, pack lots of tissues, throat sweets and try to enjoy your trip.

Genevieva · Today 09:50

Take vitamins D3, C and zinc. Do a salt water rinse of your nose and throat. Drink plenty of fluids. Get a good night’s sleep. What’s done is done. Just try your best to recover quickly.

I read an article last night that the strain XFG, referred to as “American Covid” has seen hospital admissions in the UK related to Covid jump by nearly 50% and in the London area by almost 80%.
It hasn’t gone away.

I didn't say it had gone away... I said people (admittedly, should have said most) aren't testing, and life goes on.

AgnesMcDoo · Today 12:07

DrBlackbird · Today 04:34

Not necessarily ‘just’ a cold.

American covid is making the rounds. 80% rise in hospital admissions in London last week. I’m currently v v ill with it. Tested myself today. Started as sore throat and just a cold.

So @iwasonlyeighteen you are not being unreasonable to be annoyed at unwell 😉 colleagues coming into the office, but you are being v v unreasonable to get on a plane without testing yourself and at the very least wearing a mask throughout the whole of the travel. People travelling ill is how it started last time. I’m awake coughing my lungs up atm. It’s not pleasant.

And do you really want to be away when feeling ill?

Edited

I’m sorry you are unwell but it’s not 2020 any more
