Colleagues came into work poorly and now I’m getting sick, and I’m due to go away this weekend.

My colleagues have had stinking colds this week. I’ve been saying all week to stay away from me as I’m away this weekend but they’ve not listened and now I’m starting to get poorly.

Snuffly nose, sore throat, headache, I’m exhausted.

My issue is I’m meant to be going away tomorrow, I’m flying on a long weekend to Denmark.

AIBU to dose up and still go? There’s no way I would get a doctor to say I can’t travel, I feel crappy but can probably muster for the weekend.

Of course you should still go. It’s a cold not the bubonic plague! That time of year I’m afraid

AgnesMcDoo · Yesterday 18:04

it’s just a cold

Canarymonster · Yesterday 18:05

Just a cold. no doctor is going to say you are unfit to travel so you can claim on your travel insurance (if that is the line you are thinking of going down )

just go-you'll probably have a great time and feel better

Arlanymor · Yesterday 18:05

I would go but wear a mask on the plane to prevent yourself from infecting others with the recycled air. I hope that you feel a bit better when you dose up and can enjoy your break.

Piglet89 · Yesterday 18:06

How old are you OP?

Blimms · Yesterday 18:08

So, you’re just going to do exactly the same as your colleagues did. I’m not saying don’t go, but you aren’t really in a position to criticise.

purplecorkheart · Yesterday 18:08

If it is a cold I would travel on. I would be wear a mask and be mindful of good hygiene habits like coughing into elbow etc. There are some good cold and flu tablets on the market so I would dose up (making sure that it is the non drowsy version and ok the take into your destination).

CherryKerry · Yesterday 18:08

Guessing if they were well enough to work, you'll be well enough to take a short flight.

Just remember though, as you are clearly annoyed at them spreading their germs, you'll be doing that very thing all through the airport and on the plane.

We’d stand to lose £1,500 each for our anniversary weekend so there’s a bit more at stake!

Go if you have no problem with your own outrageous double-standards!

Theonewhogotthecake · Yesterday 18:15

I’m sorry you aren’t feeling well. You don’t really have much choice but to dose up, stay hydrated and try and get a bit of rest when you can.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · Yesterday 18:16

I think you should still go. You won’t be able to claim on the insurance for a cold.

I would wear a mask and try to enjoy it as much as you can - maybe change plans to a bit more resting and a bit less sightseeing but it is what it is.

It’s really disappointing when these things are spoiled by a cold but it’s out of your control so there’s not much you can do.

It is irritating when people come to work with colds etc. but not sure if your job can be done remotely? You can always bring your own mask with the higher level if protection another time.

TheChosenTwo · Yesterday 18:17

It’s a cold?
yes you still go. I mean, what justification is there otherwise? Fair enough if you’re happy to lose the cost of your trip and you always end up hospitalised with a cold; wouldn’t be a good idea to travel.

JudyTeeny · Yesterday 18:19

Get some First Defence or Boots' own brand, if you use it straight away it can lessen your symptoms. It always works for me. Take paracetamol, if your cold comes out you'll feel OK, even if you're sneezing and runny nosed. Get some balm tissues so you don't get a sore nose.

As the OP already pointed out in the first post.

drogon6 · Yesterday 18:26

It seems like you’re complaining that your colleagues came to work and made you sick, but you are going to go away (presumably on a plane?) and risk making others sick? I’m not saying you shouldn’t - I’m just saying it’s life. We can’t always avoid it especially at this time of year.

Bestfootforward11 · Yesterday 18:30

It’s a cold. It’s your anniversary. Just enjoy being together. My DH and I have had some lovely days in Ikea for some anniversaries! 😂 (sometimes with a cold!).

3k for a few days in Denmark? Hope the hotel is good one !

ClairDeLaLune · Yesterday 18:54

So you’re so precious that all your colleagues should stay away from you so as not to infect you, but you’re happy to go and infect an entire plane load of people. What made you so special? Double standards much.

HettyTagliatelli · Yesterday 18:58

It wouldn’t occur to me not to go to work or on holiday for a simple cold. If you can dose up and feel ok, why wouldn’t you? just don’t be a hypocrite and think your holiday is more important than people going to work.

SparkyBlue · Yesterday 19:08

It’s a cold. We all have one in the house right now. Youngest DC was actually unwell but it’s just a very snotty cold for the rest of us and we are otherwise fine.

TheCosyRain · Yesterday 19:14

I second buying buying some Vicks first defence. Get it and use it exactly as instructed asap. I did this for the first time ever recently. I started with a sore throat and other classic symptoms that 100% mean cold is coming for me and ended up with nothing more than a slight sniffle!

Bananaramahammock · Yesterday 19:14

But the world can't stop for a cold. Businesses can't pay for people to have sick days for a cold. You wash your hands a lot and you dose up on vit C if you are working in a environment when people are ill around you.
Now woman up and enjoy your weekend.

MissCooCooMcgoo · Yesterday 19:15

Urgh, I feel you op. I went to a conference this week and the amount of people there ill was substantial and now I feel shocking!

Stompythedinosaur · Yesterday 19:15

I love that you're angry with colleagues for coming to work I'll but are happy to fly ill!

I would go, absolutely, but I would accept that life (for everyone) doesn't stop when you have a minor illness.
