Colleagues came into work poorly and now I’m getting sick, and I’m due to go away this weekend.

My colleagues have had stinking colds this week. I’ve been saying all week to stay away from me as I’m away this weekend but they’ve not listened and now I’m starting to get poorly.

Snuffly nose, sore throat, headache, I’m exhausted.

My issue is I’m meant to be going away tomorrow, I’m flying on a long weekend to Denmark.

AIBU to dose up and still go? There’s no way I would get a doctor to say I can’t travel, I feel crappy but can probably muster for the weekend.

Cancer is probably a bit worse.

Well yeah but the post is about colds

I wish people would either stay at home or work from home with a cold as it’s selfish.
Two people in my small office were very visibly ill and struggling with their symptoms. Both would get sick pay if they called in sick, both could work from home if they chose to. At the very least they could wear a mask. I’m hourly paid and won’t get paid for being sick and also have underlying health conditions so will likely be off as I’ve started with a headache and sore throat.

Do you really mean stay at home with just a cold?
Most people with a cold feel a bit grotty but don't need time off work. A couple of paracetamol and keeping busy, with some fresh air getting to and from work is probably the best thing. And obviously catch your sneezes, dispose of your tissues etc.
Being visibly ill and struggling does suggest a sick day would be better, but most people don't feel so ill with a cold.
I feel for people who are vulnerable, but I wouldn't want to move towards a world where anyone with any symptoms is advised to stay away from all contact. I don't think that would benefit health on a global level.

Remember the year after covid? People got all the colds!

How does sick pay work these days - do you have to stand to so many days without pay before sick pay kicks in, and then is it a set amount per day sick pay or is it full pay?

I'm just wondering if there's a reason they come into work when they're ill that's another layer of consideration we don't realise?
