AIBU to post a note through neighbours door?

We have recently got some new next door neighbours who are a group of uni students. They seem nice enough in passing but we haven’t had much chance to properly speak to them.

Since they moved in 3 nights ago, they have been incredibly noisy in the middle of the night. As in, shouting outside in the garden, banging on the internal walls etc. Last night at 4am one of them did a blood curdling scream!

It’s partially an issue as its terraced houses, so it’s hard to know where a noise is coming from sometimes. Every night it’s woken me up I’ve panicked there’s someone in my house and had to get up to check to realise it’s coming from them!

It’s also just (obviously) very annoying!! We both work full time and I leave for work at 8am, so being disturbed sleeping has a massive impact on my day. I’m a bad sleeper at the best of times and really struggle to get back to sleep after being woken.

I’d like to stress this isn’t normal terraced houses neighbourly noise, it’s very very loud boys messing about and being very disturbing! We’ve had students next door before and not been disturbed like this.

I want to put a note through the door on the basis that they may not realise they’re disturbing us and therefore can’t try and be quieter. DH thinks that will aggregate them and be passive aggressive and that they’ll calm down after freshers.

I don’t mind if they’re noisy occasionally (on a weekend!) as obviously everyone is, but I really can’t cope with another night of no sleep like this.

AIBU to post a note through the door?

My idea was to say along the lines of:

Hi,

Sorry to be awkward but for the last few nights we’ve been woken up by you in the early hours of the morning. We both have to leave for work quite early so it’s really hard to lose out on sleep!

Is there any chance you would be able to try and keep it down overnight during the week? Totally understand you want to have people round but it’s very noisey when you’re all shouting inside as we don’t have the thickest walls!

Thanks,
Neighbours

Just tell them to pack it in, and if they don't then tell their landlord. Just because they are young lads doesn't give them any right to upset their neighbours.

Buffs · 02/10/2026 18:33

Speak to them, it will have more impact.

Beingseenisneedy · 02/10/2026 20:30

DozyCrow · 01/10/2026 08:04

No. That note is far too pleading. You shouldn't be begging them to act responsibly, and shouldn't be apologising for asking, they'll just walk right over you. Try knocking again later in the evening, or write a much more assertive (but polite) note. (Edited to add that Kindly's example above is much better).

Do you know what uni they're attending? If a discussion doesn't work then maybe talk to the uni, though not sure if they'll do anything.

If all attempts fail then put your speakers against the adjoining bedroom wall when you get up and blast a bit of Barry Manilow until you leave for work. They'll soon get the message (joking of course).

Edited

We actually did this, and it worked.
Appreciate it could have backfired, but we'd tried everything else.

sleeeeeeepy · 04/10/2026 15:04

If anyone is still interested it has escalated as they have filled our black bin with their rubbish! They are the only culprits as they’re the only ones with no black bin and they bin bags are filled with beer cans (which should be recycled anyway!)

I am not sure if that is ‘escalated’ assuming the noise is still a lot better.

I think that is just 18/19 year olds finding a ‘solution’ to their rubbish. That is definitely cause for a chat though. Maybe if you explain to them how bins work and help them order a black bin (or get their landlord to) it could help break the ice and then they would hopefully be more considerate.

It is annoying, but not the same as late night noise, which I think is a form of harassment.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 04/10/2026 15:47

Get a lock for your bin.

sweetpickle2 · 04/10/2026 16:31

That hasn’t ‘escalated’ you never spoke to them so they never knew you thought they were loud. It’s uni students not knowing how bins work, not a personal vendetta.

Becuriousnotjudgemental1980 · 04/10/2026 17:10

I think that’s too nice. Bang on the door and tell them to grow up and shut the eff up or next time itll
be the police!

clopertyclop · 04/10/2026 17:14

They’ll take no notice. Do you know who the landlord is? If not, pop round to ask as there’s an issue with the roof or something.

godmum56 · 04/10/2026 17:17

OneFastPinkTraybake · 01/10/2026 20:40

That's just a waste of officers. Totally.

why a waste? The Uni fund them.

SumptuousPecanNougat · 04/10/2026 17:23

I'd like to believe that anyone intelligent enough to get into a university would understand that banging into walls and screaming (!!!) in the middle of the night will be heard by neighbours on the other side of the walls and will disturb them. However, it does seem that intelligence isn't a prerequisite for university these days... Either way, I'd assume they know they're being a bane to their neighbours' existence and simply don't care. That said, it doesn't hurt to ask them to be quiet, but I'd prepare to have to go to their landlord, if possible (and just hope and pray that it makes any difference).

don't post a note through, post the beercans through......

Or, you could just tell the landlord that your young neighbors need bins, thus solving their problem and yours.

fruitbrewhaha · 01/10/2026 09:29

Talk to them. If they wake you at 4am just get up and have a word.

Tut tut. You’re being sensible. But don’t you know Mumsnetters never miss a chance to inflate and inflame any situation?

maxslice · 04/10/2026 19:09

blackpooolrock · 01/10/2026 09:47

go around at 4am absolutely raging and knock on their door hard enough to go through it and tell them to shut the up

This will, of course, motivate them to be especially anxious to be considerate and accommodating to you. No chance of it backfiring at all.

maxslice · 04/10/2026 19:10

sleeeeeeepy · 01/10/2026 10:00

I did consider ringing the police but it was swiftly followed by howls of laughter and more yelling so I assumed it was clearly not any actual danger. I agree it might have made them think twice but I equally don’t want to waste police time

Good for you, OP.

How are people who go to uni spoiled and entitled ?

Maybe this poster is speaking from experience having been spoiled and entitled at uni. Or, was born that way.

This! The landlord should have provided the appropriate bins.

I agree, it's annoying but not antisocial like noise. Why not talk to them about the bins; tell them they need to get on to their landlord to arrange bins for them. Including a recycling bin and collection.

In fairness, our area has two options: a black bin which you have to pay for or big brown bags which you fill with black bags and put out on bin day. The bags are free, so I assume a lot of landlords prefer it (especially as there’s no risk of the bin going walkabout etc).

Having said that, it’s possible they don’t know about the brown bags. Equally, lots of residents complain the brown bags attract rats (true) so perhaps they’re trying to avoid using them for this reason.

I have placed their rubbish bags inside their yard for now (tried to knock but no answer again). There was no room to put my own rubbish in there which is the point where I am annoyed (if it was only one bag I wouldn’t really care). I agree that perhaps a chat is best but when they never answer that’s quite hard!

Have you put your notes with their door asking them to ring you?

I would get a free Sim and give them that number as you probably don't want them having your actual mobile number.

Crazy you have to pay for a bin so poor people just deal with bin bags and presumably pests?

If they continue, contact the landlord.

LostThestral · 07/10/2026 13:38

Can understand their bin confusion, i've never heard heard of putting bin bags into bigger bin bags for collection.

Doesn't excuse putting their bags in your bin though unless they are in a place that could be confused as communal
