AIBU to post a note through neighbours door?

We have recently got some new next door neighbours who are a group of uni students. They seem nice enough in passing but we haven’t had much chance to properly speak to them.

Since they moved in 3 nights ago, they have been incredibly noisy in the middle of the night. As in, shouting outside in the garden, banging on the internal walls etc. Last night at 4am one of them did a blood curdling scream!

It’s partially an issue as its terraced houses, so it’s hard to know where a noise is coming from sometimes. Every night it’s woken me up I’ve panicked there’s someone in my house and had to get up to check to realise it’s coming from them!

It’s also just (obviously) very annoying!! We both work full time and I leave for work at 8am, so being disturbed sleeping has a massive impact on my day. I’m a bad sleeper at the best of times and really struggle to get back to sleep after being woken.

I’d like to stress this isn’t normal terraced houses neighbourly noise, it’s very very loud boys messing about and being very disturbing! We’ve had students next door before and not been disturbed like this.

I want to put a note through the door on the basis that they may not realise they’re disturbing us and therefore can’t try and be quieter. DH thinks that will aggregate them and be passive aggressive and that they’ll calm down after freshers.

I don’t mind if they’re noisy occasionally (on a weekend!) as obviously everyone is, but I really can’t cope with another night of no sleep like this.

AIBU to post a note through the door?

My idea was to say along the lines of:

Hi,

Sorry to be awkward but for the last few nights we’ve been woken up by you in the early hours of the morning. We both have to leave for work quite early so it’s really hard to lose out on sleep!

Is there any chance you would be able to try and keep it down overnight during the week? Totally understand you want to have people round but it’s very noisey when you’re all shouting inside as we don’t have the thickest walls!

Thanks,
Neighbours

Saying the university won't be interested isn't necessarily correct. Some universities have liaison groups with the community, especially those that are in smaller towns where students make up a high percent of residents.

when I was a student, when we moved in our lovely neighbours popped round with muffins to introduce themselves. They were lovely, we were 8 students living in a house, I’m sure occasionally we were
noisy but we tried our best as we knew how lovely the couple next door were. Maybe pop round with a welcome note, some treats and within that note mention the noise - I don’t think it will aggravate them they are most probably just excitable students and it’s probably freshers weeek and will get much better x

Contact landlord let him deal with it

Tricky, I would keep trying to knock and speak in person to someone first. Have you spoken to the neighbours on the other side of them to see what they think or if they have spoken to them? A two pronged attack might be better. If you really can’t get hold of them. Then I would start the letter with something like “ Hi, we’re Terry and June and we live next door, we work very hard and need our sleep. We’ve knocked many times in the hope of speaking to you but we haven’t seen anyone so I’m writing a note just to ask if you could keep the noise down especially at night” Failing that I would find out which estate agent is letting the property and complain to them. If that fails then it’s the council.

Hellohelga · 01/10/2026 13:17

Did read the note. Next time they are noisy go round with DH and tell them STFU. If that doesn’t work report to the landlord.

EmmaB1309 · 01/10/2026 13:19

Go talk to them.
If you do decide to send a note, which honestly I would probably do myself, you don’t need that big long diatribe. They are young students and you can probably afford to be a bit more lighthearted and direct.
’Hey folks, any chance you could keep the noise down during the night? Much appreciated ‘

EagerPlayer · 01/10/2026 13:55

I’d be straight round there for a word at 4am!

Voneska · 01/10/2026 13:57

Sorry but I cannot see the point ( of complaining) it's like asking A Dog not to bark, or asking a Hooker not to have $€X)

DeftGoldHedgehog · 01/10/2026 14:21

It's not unreasonable to ask them to keep the noise down after 11pm during the week, say. Not that you expect them to be tucked up in bed up but to be conscious that there are neighbours trying to sleep.

If I were you I'd invest in ear protection though as they will probably get giddy/stoned/drunk/over-excited at some point and forget. I remember quite rightly being told off by my friends' neighbours in Northern France for laughing (guffawing) in the street late at night. I was quite stoned and everything was hilarious, and was probably a bit of a self-absorbed twat at 21.

Foolish1984 · 01/10/2026 14:34

Play the Mr Blobby theme tune on full blast on repeat just as you go to work and leave it on alllllll day.
I’m deadly serious, as well. It will get the message through loud & clear - literally.

ColdAsAWitches · 01/10/2026 08:08

I'd be banging on the walls at 4vin the morning. None of this letter shite!

I'd be banging on the walls around lunchtime when they're probably trying to sleep!

Voneska · 01/10/2026 13:57

It’s not really like either of those things though is it, as one is a natural response and one is a job.

Also why have you used a misogynistic term but then censored the word sex?

hallomynameisinigomontoya · 01/10/2026 14:51

HA no flipping way I'd be taking them treats, they can bring ME treats to apologise for waking me up repeatedly.
They'd be getting 7am visits daily from me telling them to pack it in, followed by phone calls to their landlord every time they did it.

We had noisy students opposite us. This is how it panned out.

A group of us neighbours got together because we were being disturbed at all hours.

We wrote a really nice letter welcoming them to the area and asking them politely to keep it down at night because we had small kids, had to work etc.

The noise continued so one of the blokes in the street went to ask them to keep it down polite.

The noise continues so the same bloke went round and told them very directly to keep it down or we would report them to their landlord.

The noise continued. We took it in turns to go and ring their doorbell and knock loudly on their door repeatedly at 7am on the mornings after they'd made noise. (vindictive, spiteful but ultimately very satisfying).

The noise continued to the extent that one night we filmed them blaring music, shouting and finally launching a microwave from an upstairs window into the street.
We sent the film to their landlord.

The noise stopped.

You wasted a lot of time there - you should have skipped straight to landlord to report them.

People who are considerate don't do this crap in the first place...so they are unlikely to respond to letters.

I always contact the local authority in these situations, in writing. No point beating around the Bush - it won't get you anywhere.

OP just go straight to the Landlord.

BejewelledCat · 01/10/2026 15:22

My neighbour did this, a few nights in a row midweek. Several adult men were running up and down the uncarpeted stairs while shrieking along to showtunes at 2am. Finally, I got out of bed and went and hammered on the door fairly aggressively and told them to stop the fucking noise, which they did. He hasn't done it since.

I've never really been a polite note kind of person.

Halls, yes.

Most random houses scattered around university towns are private rentals, just like any other rented property. Letting agencies may specialise in student properties, but they are nothing to do with the unis.

My daughter is in a city. The office is actually on campus, and she lives on the outskirts of the city.

whatsnewbuttercup · 01/10/2026 15:25

Whatever else you decide to do, don’t send that letter.
It’s far too nice, and they will walk all over you.

cramptramp · 01/10/2026 15:26

A note through the door? I’d be banging on their door at the crack of dawn to wake them up and threatening with the police if they don’t pack it in.

AdidasBadidas · 01/10/2026 15:32

They have no noise awareness at all. I have one of these at home and they tend to be noisiest at at night after being cooped up upstairs or outdoors in the day. Daily reminders needs to keep the noise down!

You see this is where different perspectives come in. Thinking back to my student days, I reckon we'd have pinned that to the fridge and rocked with laughter over the bit about sufficient maturity.

Yeah, I'm on the OP's side, but a note like that is just ammunition.

AlwaysExtraHot · 01/10/2026 16:26

Cornucopia55 · 01/10/2026 08:48

Deal with it right away. I've had 5 DCs at uni in the last decade so have seen how quite a few student houses play out. One of my DC spent last year in a flat where this sort of thing, 4am disturbances, went on all year, making it very difficult for her to get to her daily early lectures. Your note should not be apologetic - don't grovel. Eg:
"Hi - welcome to the road! Tried to knock to talk to you directly but no reply. We've been woken by noise in the middle of the night - shouting, banging on walls, a scream at 4am. We appreciate you're settling in to a new term, but this is disturbing people's sleep and making it hard for us to get to work. This is a residential area and standard practice is no noisy activity 11pm - 7am. Please can you keep quiet between these times?
By the way, if you ever need help, eg a parcel taking in or advice on the area, we'd be glad to do what we can.
Cheers,
Sue, Billy and the kids "

If it continues, contact the landlord or agent. It may well be with an agency that deals with lots of student houses. You could call round a few and ask if it's one of theirs.

Excellent note.

MsWicked · 01/10/2026 16:44

I’d have knocked at different times until I could speak to them. They absolutely do know they’re being loud, and they should not be surprised to hear about it from the neighbours. I’d also find out who the landlord is in case they don’t quiet down.

TheOvertGardener · 01/10/2026 16:44

That’s a great note. To the point and clear.

OneFastPinkTraybake · 01/10/2026 16:46

Just speak to them. Don't write notes.
