To ask if you watched Andy Burnham’s bloody good speech?

As in actually watched it and didn’t just doom scroll the commentary? It was bold and honest and pragmatic and actually made me hopeful that we have someone at the helm with a vision for a better tomorrow who has Britain’s best interests at heart.

The National Care Service is a masterstroke, paid for out of scrapping the triple lock and the very real savings of reducing NHS bills on A&E and hospital beds for elderly who should be in care but have nowhere to go.

Scrapping right to buy and increasing council control of housing, boosting the technical education track for young people, pushing renewables, nuclear and energy sovereignty, public control of key utilities for water to get bills down and reduce pollution, investing in people & getting them back to work, leasehold reform by Christmas and everyone’s energy bill will be reduced by fast tracking decoupling energy prices from global gas pricing and by having no VAT on energy bills by TOMORROW!

You can watch the whole thing here and be directly informed instead of getting your perspective filtered through all the bots and misinformation peddlers online m.youtube.com/watch?v=jyjTT_55Gi0

Really? Why does he keep saying it then?

Go for it. I have as much contempt for them too.

That's the problem with binary thinking, no imagination.

Lol. Are you critiquing your own post?

His speech was simply awe inspiring and should be compelled watching for everybody in the country. I imagine a lot of women up and down the country are starting to develop something of a crush on the bloke, I know I am! 😍 ❤️ 🇨🇳

😆

I would hope women up and down the country would be more intelligent than that, but then standards vary.

I think in the absence of any legitimate critiques of Andy Burnham's rhetoric or policies, that poster was attempting to use sarcasm to derail the thread.

Really? Why does he keep saying it then?

He knows his audience and he’ll say anything, absolutely anything, to advance himself. He is the most insincere politician I can recall in the last 40 years. He’s nothing but a lightweight, grubby opportunist who shouldn’t be anywhere near the levers of power. God help us.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · Yesterday 17:24

@BermudaRhombus, I see your post has been deleted before I could quote it.

It's easy to call me naive but I'm afraid the evidence doesn't back you up.

It would be funny except it crops up regularly when people are talking about AB on here. A man would quite rightly be ripped to shreds for such comments.

Are you implying that I'm stupid?

That sounds dangerously close to a personal attack. Fortunately, I'm not insecure enough to be bothered by your childish insults.

Matching your sarcasm. Do you really expect me to believe that you are the only one allowed to use it?

Any yet here you are being insecure...

I’d love it if there was a broader debate than right good, left bad. It would be a lot more interesting that’s for sure.

Some of us are more nuanced than that, but it appears to me, that such is the level of hatred aimed at previous Tory governments, as well as Reform, there is little chance of ‘broader debate’.

I found the Blair government agreeable, for example, but this current tax and spend government, populated by the incompetent, the ideological, the spiteful - they made things personal, for me at least. There is no defending them.

The FT piece by a journo who has followed him for years, said it all.

That's exactly where I am. Except the Blair bit. I am a bit meh about him.

New Labour was a different world, back when Burnham was just a hapless minister promoted beyond his abilities to tick a regional quota. Whoever thought he’d end up running the country?! That really is batshit.

Looks pretty good from where I’m sitting and his popularity ratings seem to indicate quite a few people agree with me.

Batshit, bullshit, bilious and bankrupting. Sadly.

At what point during his tenure did you suffer a change of heart on Starmer?

I know and that’s ok. In the end he’ll face the public and they’ll give their verdict. We hope for different things and that’s democracy.

5128gap · Yesterday 17:38

NorthXNorthWest · Yesterday 17:16

Its not the paying for things that is the issue. It is who is paying for them and how.

OK. So we're agreed the improvements suggested by Burnham are not the issue, and that it's not an issue that we have to pay for them.
So, how do you think they should be paid for? And if its by cutting benefits, how does the maths work on that? According to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation the effects of poverty already costs us £78 billion a year, so creating more poverty isn't going to be cheap. (Apologies if you had another idea that isn't cutting benefits.)

Theblueyonder · Yesterday 17:38

Looks like Burnham’s speech is already unravelling….oh dear.

Andy Burnham plans to pass a law scrapping the triple lock before the next election.

Despite the Prime Minister having previously said the policy would remain in its current form until 2030, No 10 has said MPs will vote on plans to reform it before the election.

No and I’m not sure why the post was deleted.

I did respond to a post of yours that got deleted, but you are quoting my reply to the deleted post of another user. It wasn't addressed to you but it can get confusing with all of the deletions.

I don't really know why your post was deleted either tbh. It didn't offend me personally but I imagine that someone reported it as a personal attack.

I responded to say that you can call me naive if you like, but the evidence doesn't back you up. Because actually, Burnham has a good track record on cross party collaboration.
