If they do away with the triple lock it wouldn’t deter them from getting my vote - as long as they abolish PIP for people with ‘anxiety’ and other ailments we all live through and get on with our daily lives - including holding down a job. To posters on here aggressively asking what benefits immigrants get - surely the ones arriving on illegal crossings get accommodation, food and spending money? That has to be paid for by taxpayers. I’m 67 and still working and paying tax. My husband died before he was old enough to receive a pension. I’m not living in the lap of luxury like younger generations imagine. The less we get now, the less generations of the future will get.

Monty36 · 30/09/2026 14:30

The changes to the triple lock are doable. But they will not fund social care costs for all.
I wonder what will be in the budget.
The conference was a test of confidence in Burnham and his ideas. He clearly told them to try not to indulge in infighting. As Labour are inclined to do. He realises even if some do not that it is more than a talking shop amongst the faithful these days, but a platform, an advert to those who do not vote Labour.
There was an uneasy moment when he announced he will fight tooth and nail for the ideas he believed in. And conference sat silently. And he waited. And waited. Then someone clapped. Thankfully. And he asked the Labour devotees to go with him if they believed in the majority of what he said. He explained he knows full well there will be some issues some will not agree with.
It was a good speech. And at least he has some ideas. I don’t agree with them all. But he has some gumption. He was setting out his stall to the Labour Party.
I really did not agree with changing the voting system for example.
The budget will set out some detail to everyone. Labour devotee or not.

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 30/09/2026 14:32

I would. It seems fair and I say that as someone who is going to be collecting my pension in a year's time.

Then again posters thought Starmer would stay, and Kemi wouldn’t.

Do the Tories have a credible alternative to Kemi?

ThaneOfGlamis · 30/09/2026 14:34

I agree with scrapping the triple lock, even though it affects me. But not to redirect the money to elder social care. That should remain means tested. Why should people who have nothing have to pay towards the care of people who have plenty?

Labour needed to change leader, I’m not sure why you’re looking elsewhere for other changes.

It was Starmer who was ousted.

TattieSconeEggAndBacon · 30/09/2026 14:36

I am glad they have ditched the Triple Lock and impressed that Andy Burnham actually had the balls to do it. I think all parties would be glad to have it off the books and that they wouldn’t have wanted to be the ones to do it. For me, it’s improved my opinion of Burnham.

I'd never ever vote Labour no matter what they promise. They have bankrupt the country and cranked up tax and borrowing too many times for me to ever trust them. One of the first things they did when they got in power was to raise benefits. Spending so much money and creating so much additional debt is totally unfair on our children and grandchildren who will inherit all this debt. I know Conservatives added debt but Labour take it to another level. I'm coming up to state pension age but don't mind about triple or double lock. I think spending on all areas need reigning in. We need Reform UK to cut welfare spending by imposing a cap that no person on benefits gets more than a person who works full time on minimum wage. At the same time increase personal allowances so workers benefit and work is incentivised. We need to opt out of EHCR and adopt A British Bill of Rights. We need to make the NHS a National Health Service as it was supposed to be not an International service. Any non UK citizens should pay up front for treatment or have medical insurance cover the full cost. Too many people from overseas take treatment then skip off overseas and don't pay their bill. We need to cut interest on student loans. We need to cut back the Civil Service to numbers before COVID. We need to cap the amount of employers pension to say 15 percent for Civil Servants but instead pay them that money as higher salary to stop them claiming UC top ups. We need to stop PIP payments to people who only have ADHD, mild anxiety or other less serious issues and focus resources on the most disabled. We need to make people who want UC top ups to work at least 30 hours per week. We need free child care for people going out to work for 1-4 year olds if they work 40 hours. Work less and pay their own child care. We need more after school clubs run by child care people. I'd like care leavers to be given a £5k start up at 18 then £2k for 3 years. We need to stop the boats. We need to increase spending on defence. I'd like a better mental health service that doesn't leave a gap between child services and adult services. We need a smaller state. I know no party will do all of this but Reform UK is closest to the things on my wish list. I would like the next government whoever they are to start to repay the massive debt as at the moment far too much income tax collected is simply wasted on servicing the UK debt.

Spot on ❤️❤️❤️

Did someone say we were in a communist dictatorship????

We are :-(

Monty36 · 30/09/2026 14:40

I will wait and see. Burnham is a man able to galvanise. Good with words. And ideas of social good.
Actual delivery matters. Of much. I do hope he is not trying to run before he can walk. I would love it if he can deliver. But it takes a team to do that. When I look at the cabinet I am less enthralled.

I'm not looking for changes, I'm suggesting a reason why the Tories might hang on to their leader.

Labour had an alternative. The Tories might be hanging onto Kemi because the candidate pool to replace her is dire.

Asylum seekers have no access to public funds except their minimal welfare payment. It is under £50 per week if they are responsible for feeding themselves and under £10 per week (that is not a typo) if they are in an asylum hotel providing food, or ‘food’.

But they get free NHS, dentists, taxis, phones, clothes etc. :-(

I don’t think they’re unhappy, as Labour MPs were with Starmer.

It’s been posted on here about Kemi going when in reality it was Starmer who got ousted. More posts on the same don’t seem compelling.

True. The dearth of able politicians is viewable across all the parties.
Too many are career politicians.

One I am curious about, who is actually able is Nadeem Zahawi. Arguably Reform’s biggest scalp. He is the only bod who is not in their ‘shadow cabinet’. And has no job. I can only assume he is being lined up for Farage who does not, in my view want, ever, to really be PM. He would hate it.

Urban myth. They get nothing of the sort apart from healthcare. Are you sufficiently heartless to deny a sick human being that?

Perhaps the Tories have a lower bar.

They get about £50 per week for food and other personal items, plus, of course, a roof over their head.

Labour who have barely been in power in my lifetime haven’t had much chance to bankrupt a country

there was a lot of corruption during the last few Tory decades

I will never have time for anyone who thinks that children should suffer in the name of controlling benefits

Every time Labour has been in power they have left the country bankrupt.

What bollocks. The last time they left government they bailed the banks out after a global financial meltdown. Look how the debt increased after that despite austerity. And I refer you to Truss.

CoffeeAndACroissant · 30/09/2026 13:02

How?

What specific Labour policy do you feel has "ruined" the country and in what way?

Not trying to start a bun fight. Just genuinely curious. I see this sentiment a lot on MN but never with any rationale.

All they do is give millions away to other countries and let more illegals in via both boat and plane.
