I have a multi millionaire senior relative who receives £1,400 from the state pension each month, in addition to 6k private pension.

He's not means tested and he's received that for 30 years. Yes, he paid into the system but he does not need it!!! He also had free uni, dirt cheap first house back in the 60s and retired aged 59.

Meanwhile the younger generation:

  • thousands in student loan debt
  • asset poor as can't get on the housing ladder
  • means tested for child benefit, tax free childcare etc
  • working until late 60s/ 70s

Why do pensioners have it easy while younger ones pay the price?

For vulnerable pensioners at risk of poverty, there should obviously be provision to help them, I'm not suggesting we let people starve. But multimillionaire pensioners or very asset rich pensioners do NOT need the state pension. It's about time things changed.

I very much doubt (to put it politely or rather don't believe to be more blunt) that he gets that much as £1045 is the full New State Pension (which not everyone gets) and £800 and something is the Basic State Pension.

You really need to check your facts.

People who are on the old state pension can get much more than people on the new one depending on their earnings. I've just been helping my 89 year old mother do her tax return so I've seen the letters from DWP telling her what her weekly pension is. For 25/26 it was just over £330 a week so around £1400 a month.

Randomamsi · 29/09/2026 19:59

Whatever the amount he doesn't need it.

Hard to take you seriously when you don’t even have the correct facts.

Blinkett · 29/09/2026 21:37

Google the state pension legislation. It’s a benefit.

Its like shouting into a void.

Livpool · 29/09/2026 22:07

Will you feel the same when you are in receipt of state pension? I am assuming not.

I say this as a full time working mum, whose own mother can live her life thanks to state pension. She receives part of my late dad’s. Otherwise she would be in poverty.

guiling · 29/09/2026 22:08

Sad state of affairs with all the politics of envy.

BorgQueen · 29/09/2026 22:09

Half a million pensioners get an extra £5k or more via SERPS, 18000 get more than £10k extra. Widows could also inherit SERPS.

bannabead · 29/09/2026 22:09

@Happyjoe what’s that got to do with my reply to a poster saying private pensions weren’t available for today’s pensioners?!

Timbrelltime · 29/09/2026 22:09

Blinkett · 29/09/2026 20:13

State pension isn’t a pension scheme though. It’s a benefit.

No it isnt - I have paid all my contributions . It is not my fault that my National Insurance payments may have been misspent but it is my right to receive a paid for pension at retirement.
You are mistaking ‘anyone gets for no input’ Benefits for ‘paid for’ entitlements.

viques · 29/09/2026 22:10

Happyjoe · 29/09/2026 22:03

There are many many women who stayed at home, looking after children who never built up private pensions, who rely on the state pension. About 4 million of them and over half of those living in real poverty.

Not just women who stayed at home. Up until recently a lot of employers did not offer a pension scheme at all so many people have not got a private pension to add to the basic state pension.

Then there are those who haven’t worked because of disability, or who haven’t worked full time through choice or circumstance who again have not got the safety net and security of a private pension.

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 29/09/2026 22:10

Randomamsi · 29/09/2026 20:04

It would be means testing the amount you have in a private pension eg if it's over a couple of million, you don't need it.

If you'd said that in your OP title you'd have got very different replies to those you received with your rage bait title.

kirbykirby · 29/09/2026 22:12

Only if they refund all the years of NI paid!

Mooselove · 29/09/2026 22:12

Pritipoll · 29/09/2026 20:12

I'm a pensioner and I don't know anyone who received £1400 monthly I personally only get £800

That's because no one on state pension gets that much. The OP is lying

And yet 70% of today’s pensioners have private pension schemes, And many of them are far better than today’s schemes.

bannabead · 29/09/2026 21:59

I honestly don’t understand how posters write such crap. Current pensioners have better private pensions on average because the schemes were more generous!

Maybe some but not all. My early jobs in retail and charity sector did not offer pension schemes. I am so tired of the myth that we all had generous final salary pensions

bannabead · 29/09/2026 22:13

@Mooselove why do you think the OP is lying?

Whatever he got if he was getting £1400 a month now, he wouldn't have got the same 20 or 30 years ago

bannabead · 29/09/2026 22:14

@Newusername2026 I never said all but I was replying to a post that said they didn’t exist!

double0seven · 29/09/2026 22:14

Tax on £6k per month @ 20% is £1200. Your relative is paying back almost all of his pension in tax every month OP. And it's probably even more because some of the tax will be paid at 40%. You sound very angry, bitter and selfish. You should focus on what you have been fortunate to have in your life.

viques · 29/09/2026 22:15

bannabead · 29/09/2026 22:12

And yet 70% of today’s pensioners have private pension schemes, And many of them are far better than today’s schemes.

Which by your own figures means 30% don’t have private pensions. That’s a lot of people.

bannabead · 29/09/2026 22:15

@Timbrelltime yes it is a benefit!

Actually I think this will be damaging to many many elderly people.

There seems to be a myth like the one spouted in this OP that elderly people are all well off. Not everyone benefitted from cheaper housing or free uni education.

Really you have to be a nasty piece of work to be celebrating reducing the amount of income that some of the most vulnerable members of society will receive.

Constantrunner · 29/09/2026 22:15

Serps topped up your state pension based on working. Basic state pension for older pensioners is far less, but those who have worked for many years get a decent top up.

Wheresthebeach · 29/09/2026 22:15

BigYellowBus · 29/09/2026 19:59

You do know we have pretty much the lowest state pension in Western Europe. That's not something to be proud of

Exactly

Charlieiscool · 29/09/2026 22:15

It won’t mean that you’ll be given more if pensioners get less. The pensioners that worked and saved anyway.

BorgQueen · 29/09/2026 22:16

Mooselove · 29/09/2026 22:12

Have you not read a word I’ve written where I’ve stated categorically that some pensioners DO get well in excess of the ‘basic’ old SP?
Use your brain and google SERPS, then you might not spout such crap.
