On holiday at a holiday park with evening entertainment, the entertainment staff tried to get me on stage as they had randomly decided to pick me, I said no, they kept on and on before telling my daughter to get me or I obviously didn’t love her.
I made it clear I did not want to go on stage and then he asked my daughter my name before getting the audience to chant my name to go.
This is kids entertainment and although the children were asked to grab a parent, many didn’t and I really didn’t like the humiliation.

Wow, that's sensationally crap. I am not an avid complainer at all but I would send an official complaint about that. I don't mind banter and even a bit of pressure to join in, but the "you obviously don't love her" bit is completely inappropriate.

Absolutely embarrassing for older children but primary school children love it.

Mines absolutely would not love it. They would have been distressed by it until about 5 or 6 and then mortified. They still talk about how awful it was when I went on stage to give their head teacher a gift in school assembly when they were 7 and 9.

What stopped you then?

She didn’t want to. That should be enough! If someone declines to participate, move on.

What stopped you then?

I'm going out on a limb here, but I have an idea she just didn't want to.

It sounds like it wasn't you that was chosen to go on stage but your DD, and a parent was needed to accompany her? Her Dad was requested first, he refused, then you refused too? So your DD didn't get to take part and you felt humiliated.

My DH would have taken one for the team and accompanied our child if I really didn't want to take part so they were included in the festivities.

Complain so they don’t do it again. What a bunch of twats.

I bet if the OP said that she went on stage even though she really didn’t want to and felt stupid at the things she had to get involved in everyone would be saying
“ why didn’t you put your big girl pants on”
”why didn’t you use your words and say no”
”no is a complete sentence “
and any if the other MN phrases
she didnt want to participate
end of

Ultimately I agree with this.

Did your DD want you to go up? I remember being about her age and my step-dad got chosen to go up - me and my step-sister were begging him and I remember him refusing then being an absolute asshole about it for the rest of the night.

I think if a child had really wanted me to do it I'd have sucked it up but what swayed me into YANBU is that the entertainer immediately let your husband off the hook - why did he then keep pestering you?

Perhaps avoid Mumsnet then if you think women are twats.

You’re having a go at the wrong person op. She was sticking up for you as someone was taking the piss out of you choosing to go on holiday there

Smallestshadow · 29/09/2026 20:16

I’d have got up on stage but would never do Sports Day but that’s my personal choice. I have kids age 10 and 20, one sporty and one not. Neither remotely bothered by me not running. What mattered to them is that I showed up to watch them and what matters here is the time OP spends with her child on holiday! People should not be forced to do things which makes them very uncomfortable for the sake of entertaining others.

And yes it is funny how they never seem to pester/badger the man and accepted the no!
