AIBU to think wearing shoes indoors is a bit odd?

For thinking it’s weird to wear shoes inside the house?! Had a couple over last week for lunch and they never took shoes off- even if it’s not bad weather the bottom of shoes are filthy!! So would they go round their house all day in shoes? So weird to me!!
now I’m cleaning my floors as they are so dirty!

@SpiritAdder Because when you’re privileged, you don’t tend to come into contact with streets or public transport full of actual shit, piss, vomit, dead animals, and bad drainage

Really not sure how many people this is a problem for? People who are not privileged don’t tend to wade through streets filled with the excrement and dead animals. Maybe this is the case in some third world places, although if do, I dare say they have more problems to contend with than if Mary takes her shoes in/off while visiting?

I’m talking about history and the classist origin of shoes on.
You do know for large parts of history some families had to share shoes? As in there were fewer pairs of shoes than there were family members?

This is cultural issue.

the thread will divide into people who (like the Japanese and most of Asia) don’t wear shoes inside (dirty!)

and people who do wear shoes inside the house (some of Europe, Australia, parts of Africa).

this does not include New Zealandets who do not wear shoes at all (thus disgusting both camps)

Nzers wear shoes inside outside and everywhere in between..🤣🤣🤣

All those shoe shops stocked with shoes no-one buys, so sad😂

Let’s see who has bad manners. You have said:
your comprehension is horribly poor, just like your manners.
you are an over privileged batshit crazy Howard Hughes who is loco about dirt.
tell people about your foot fetish before they dare enter the Gates of Mordor.
Brush up on your reading, manners and communication skills
stop being such a classist, your massive privilege is showing

All I have said was “Abusing visitors what about your host?” in response to this unmannerly comment from your buddy:
Nah. Normal people just wipe up any mess on their floors without abusing visitors and don't have a shit fit about a bit of dirt. Unlike over privileged arseholes :)

Looks like bad manners isn’t my issue.

I didn’t call anything abuse, I challenged the use of the word abuse to describe any of this and I have corrected the misconception that shoes off is anything other than of a working class historic origin.

Buy slippers.
Wear indoors...jnsure when i go out and come back in if my
Outside perimetre is highly germy or ok..
Also depends on germ obsessive or ocd deep cleaners...strange world!

Ofcoursenot26 · 28/09/2026 04:46

So, to sum up, running the risk of humiliating a guest in your home is - as anybody who is not batshit crazy knows - not worth it at all.

And only over privileged classists think it's a cultural norm.

The only possible issue that may or may not arise is a bit of dirt on your floor, and only batshit crazy Howard Hughes types or those whose massive privilege has kept them safely in their weird little bubble would argue otherwise.

Some, of course, may need mental health care for their germ phobias.

As normal people know - and over privileged loons refuse to accept - poor people sometimes have smelly feet as they have only one good pair of shoes, or holes in their socks, or no socks on at all.

I wouldn't expect an over privileged classist to know this, of course.

And, of course, as an ableist some of you will have had no thought as to diseases, medical issues etc that make removing footwear humiliating or difficult.

So, in the UK, the rule is this - do not ever ask people to remove their shoes unless you want to be thought of as a bit of a cunt.

And do let them know about your foot fetish BEFORE they visit.

You're very welcome.

What a wonderful example you are, the very epitome of an English lady. You should ask Burnham to make you the next Ambassador to the US. Trump respects exactly this kind of discourse and I think you’d be like two peas in a pod.

In my house the carpet starts on the stairs and downstairs is ok for shoes for us and visitors. Like bringing in the shopping or going in and out of the house and garden. All hard floors downstairs.
Mot sure why people have carpet downstairs.

In colder areas, uncarpeted rooms can be very cold indeed. Especially if you only have heat in one room, or can only afford to heat one room.

Copperoliverbear · 28/09/2026 05:26

Why do you not ask people to take their shoes off.

Natsku · 28/09/2026 05:30

Always a fun thread Grin

I live in a shoes off country now, everyone takes their shoes off, no one asks people to when visiting because it is so deeply ingrained in the national psyche that everyone automatically removes their shoes when entering houses. Daycare and primary schools are also shoes off, for visitors too, so are maternity and child health clinics (can be a bit difficult bending down to removes your shoes when you're at the point of pregnancy when you can't see your feet but everyone still does it).

When I grew up in the UK most homes I visited were shoes off too (and we visited a lot of homes as my dad was a minister), the few I remember being shoes on stick out in my memory as either being very dirty, or then just really uncomfortable feeling homes.

BIossomtoes · 28/09/2026 06:39

SpiritAdder · 28/09/2026 04:12

I agree it’s classist, but the classism is on the shoes on side. Because when you’re privileged, you’re not the one cleaning the footprints up the help do that. Because when you’re privileged, you don’t tend to come into contact with streets or public transport full of actual shit, piss, vomit, dead animals, and bad drainage. Because when you’re privileged you’re likely to have uber expensive stone or posh tile floors that can be thoroughly cleaned of any slight soiling from your shoes that go from house to car to office and back again.

So yes, the shoes on rule is classist shite.

I’m clearly not privileged as I clean my own floors - which never have footprints on them. I don’t know how anyone never comes into contact with streets unless they levitate. I have carpets. And I wear my shoes all the time.

HoppingPavlova · 28/09/2026 10:12

What on earth does this have to do with the price of fish, or indeed whether shoes should be on/off in a house?

YABU. It's an affectation of the working classes to make themselves seem "posh"

Wipe your feet when you come in and there's no issue.

I find it incredibly rude to ask someone to remove their shoes

This x 100!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/09/2026 11:59

Quite apart from anything else, the use of ‘poop’ irritates me. In the U.K. it’s usually ‘poo’. Presumably that article is American - the use of ‘sick’ rather than ‘ill’, too.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/09/2026 12:06

In the circles I grew up and socialised in - MC but far from loaded - shoes off was never a thing, and it was nothing to do with who cleaned the floors. My DM never had a cleaner until she was widowed and over 70, and nor did most of her circle.

Dh’s family was the same.

I once heard a relative say that shoes-off was a very lower-class thing, along with net curtains and scrubbing the front step.

dontforgetofeedthecat · 28/09/2026 12:09

People buy shoes and actually wear them. The horror 😂

As a nanny working in a range of houses, I agree. Wealthier people don’t care about shoes in the house. And before anyone suggests it, these people have cleaners once a week just as many others do, so it’s not like they’ve got people scrubbing the floors daily

fumingrightnow1 · 28/09/2026 12:20

I just don't see how its comfy im currently sat on the sofa with my feet up i just don't see how that is comfy with shoes digging into you
