For thinking it’s weird to wear shoes inside the house?! Had a couple over last week for lunch and they never took shoes off- even if it’s not bad weather the bottom of shoes are filthy!! So would they go round their house all day in shoes? So weird to me!!
now I’m cleaning my floors as they are so dirty!

Shoes off!
Why on earth would you trek pavement dirt, bacteria into your house?

Bigballler69 · 27/09/2026 16:36

I take my shoes off in my abode and wear flip flops. But that's for comfort, I don't want sweaty feet all day. I have no issue wearing the flip flops out in the garden or to walk outside the front of the house.

My brother has a shoe free house so we all diligently take out shoes off them we get there, no big deal.

I use a wheelchair. I don’t have indoor wheels and outdoor wheels.

johnd2 · 27/09/2026 16:42

It's actually better for your feet to wear shoes as little as possible, both from a strength/balance point of view and from the point of view of not having clammy damp skin all the time.
We grew up wearing shoes basically from morning to night and survived, but now we take them off at the door.
The hygiene argument doesn't really work because the kids touch everything outside, including their shoes, then touch their face and whatever else. Then they cough all over us regardless of whether we are in the house or not.
We do make them wash their hands after coming home, for what good it does!

Bacteria is already in your house regardless of shoes and i am assuming you are not crawling on the floor then you are in no danger of pavement bacteria.

There is a country to city living difference here.
I wear shoes all the time at home as I’m in and out all the time, but ima city with filthy pavements, very different situation

Itsjustgonenoonhalfpastmonsoon · 27/09/2026 16:46

Unless they know you well, you can’t expect guests to bring their slippers with them. I take my slip slips round to my dad’s and vice versa. It’s also not comfortable walking around in socked feet.

IntrinsicallyNavellGazing · 27/09/2026 16:48

Growing up the only two peoples home we had to take our shoes off were for reasons / austrian and thai I think .
No one else insisted on it. I do get it but seeing as I never eat off .y floors it's doesn't worry me too much

yeah it’s disgusting, shoes are for outdoors not indoors

And don’t start me on feet up on furniture with shoes on…..

Shoe rack by the door and slippers ready when I get in.

Christ not this again.

Never ends does it lol

Topseyt123 · 27/09/2026 17:03

This bollocks gets done to death on here.

I don't find shoes on in the house to be odd at all providing that the wearer isn't caked in mud having just waded through a ploughed field.

I do find people who try to insist everyone entering their house removes shoes no matter what to be unfailingly odd though, and often rude. My feet can quickly turn very cold if I don't wear anything on them and take absolutely ages to warm up again.

I generally wear my slippers or crocs in my own house. Just for comfort. I don't mind anyone else wearing shoes and if I am going in and out then sometimes I will also be wearing mine. It's such a non-issue.

What should cats n dogs do?

Wonderknicks · 27/09/2026 17:08

Growing up we were a shoes on household. Now I tend to take mine off & the kids always have done but I wouldn't expect visitors to do so. I have friends who are quite rude about not letting you over the threshold without taking them off. They have hard floors & a dog. I just don't get it.

Flamingojune · 27/09/2026 17:08

I find obsessing over germs n dirt to be far odder

What should cats n dogs do?

Exactly.

Perhaps some on here think that they (the dogs and cats) should walk through a footbath to disinfect and sterilise their feet!!

Nourishinghandcream · 27/09/2026 17:09

Our house is a shoe free zone and anyone visiting knows that.
We return the favour when we visit them.

TBH we don't seem to go to any houses where the owners DO wear shoes in the house.🤔

Or maybe they could wear cute little paw slippers

SerendipityCat · 27/09/2026 17:12

Anyone remember the poster a couple of years ago who had separate sets of upstairs and downstairs slippers? Now, that was odd!

Tink3rbell30 · 27/09/2026 17:16

Yes it's gross. And doormats do not clean the dirt and bacteria off them. You should have asked them to take them off if they didn't have the manners to do it automatically.

Do you go around licking your floor?

In Japan, there are slippers and toilet slippers for rhe bathroom, all shared. Staying at a traditional spa resort, I disgraced myself by forgetting to change the toilet slippers when leaving the shared bathroom. The man sweeping the floor gave me the most cutting glance I have ever seen.

Sahara123 · 27/09/2026 17:20

I’m not wandering round someone else’s house without my shoes on thank you.

Wipe their paws when they come in 😂

frenchu · 27/09/2026 17:22

i don’t mind when people wear shoes in my house downstairs but always ask them to remove if there going upstairs because I can’t just mop my carpet like I can the hard flooring downstairs
