AIBU to stay awake until my 17-year-old gets home safely?

Our DD is 17 and out with her friends tonight. They went to dinner and then to see Endgame, which I don't think is finished yet.

I am knackered and want to go to bed. But also do not want to go to bed without knowing she's home safe.

Am sat up, exhausted, willing her to get in touch.

AIBU? Would you just let her come home when you're asleep?

How do other parents of teens manage this bit??

We should manage our worries ourselves, not do things to feel better in the moment that affect our DC.

It's quite nice to know someone cares a bit tbh. The parents who manage their worries too well can seem distant.

I think you can care without transmitting pressure.

My son is 18, I don’t wait up and he’s pretty good at texting me to say roughly when he we will be home. I go up to bed but my brain doesn’t switch off until I hear him come through the door.

My mum used to set her alarm clock (late 90s... no alarms on phones) for the time I was supposed to be in and leave it near her bedroom door so I could switch it off when I came in. It would only wake her if I was late! I never was though.

I’d go to bed and not wait up but I wouldn’t go to sleep.

At 17 my DS would tell me what time he was coming home, and text me if he was going to be late. I always stayed awake and always worried.

I don’t think I was. My 20 year old has been free to come and go for a few years. He’s always been fairly sensible. I have always had him on find my iPhone and used to check where he was sometimes. Now I don’t bother as a lot his age have been at uni for years doing whatever. My only rule is that he’s quiet when he comes in so he doesn’t wake me/his younger sister.
