Crying at bake off

I cried when Molly dropped her cake. Just a few tears.

I'm a saddo aren't I?

I’m glad she had some help because all the twisting and bending for her to cook looked awful and painful.

People are being insane complaining about someone reliant on a wheelchair getting limited physical support, just to slightly redress the disadvantage they face day in day out due to not being able to have full use of their body.

The fact that that baker had said something like she’d noticed that the oven door tips down way too low (but presumably had to use it anyway and then her cake duly rolls out to the floor) shows that the contestant is doing all of the kitchen jobs it’s within her powers to do. But the producers hadn’t set up the oven safely/fairly considering her physical limitations. It could have dropped burning hot cake all over her feet or legs.

If the helper had been cooking for her then the able bodied assistant would have dived in and saved the cake, but they didn’t did they?

ImaSpringChicken · 27/09/2026 07:39

Molly's voice is SO annoying.
Danni is weird!

If anyone on the thread is more interested in the show and the bakes (than the shocking throuple hanky fanning argument) then do come on board on the Bake Off thread on the Telly Addicts board

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/5570752-the-bake-is-back-the-countdown-to-great-british-bake-off-2026-starts-here here is the link. See you over there 🍰

Thanks for the plug @LindorDoubleChoc

To be fair, we did start with a flurry of the usual complaints about diversity Casting/they're all so annoying/it was better in the old days, but we seem to be settling down a bit and hopefully it will be a thread for people who love the show to, as you say, talk about bakes and baking.

Well Im not 5, so Im not being 'silly'.

Why wouldnt you say that to a child who asked about it if theres nothing wrong with it?

No, I’ll stick with my choice of the word silly. It (manifestly) doesn’t have an age cut-off.

You are being deliberately obtuse. The obvious response to a child asking why someone lives with two other daddies isn’t to say you hope they’re lucky enough to live like that themselves one day 🙄, just like if they asked why someone at school has eg two mummies, you’d simply say ‘Some women love other women’ rather than ‘if you’re lucky you’ll meet another woman some day too.’

It's not "ooh aren't I naughty" it's just bad manners and fucking disgusting to watch.

That’s what I mean. She does the naughty thing whereas I think it’s revolting’

It's like she's never eaten from cutlery before,it's most bizarre.

Wrt to her speech,I always think she's heavily medicated and a few beats behind and has to try hard to speak, move and eat at the same time.

Please, can you explain how someone in a throuple is automatically an attention seeker?
The Bake Off has always had people who enjoy baking and don't want to be a star. Along with people in each season who seem like they are (at least partly) on it as they hope it will be a springboard to something else.

And why must all contestants only represent most people? People who are of Jamaican heritage/gay/ND/disabled also watch TV and so it makes sense to also represent them.
A Bake Off cast entirely made up of people who are the UK average (so, white, about 40, cohabiting or married to one person) would be very weird.
Out of curiosity, did you have a problem with Juergen or Giuseppe in earlier seasons?

Almost the entire cohort this year is a DEI tick. No I do not think that everyone should be straight, white and 40.

Your two sentences somewhat cancel each other out. If there weren't any 'DEI ticks' then most of the bakers would be straight, white and 40.
Who exactly DO you want?

Personally I would like their baking prowess to be factored in over and above what projected characteristic they need to tick off. Diversity is important and should be factored if if there are bakers of equal quality but some of them this year are truly terrible

You mean protected.
Someone said on another thread that Alison was on Second Helpings and said they can all bake, but it's a question of how they will bake in the tent, having to talk while baking and being filmed, being in an unfamiliar kitchen and equipment and under scrutiny.
In short, anyone's baking performance can be unpredictable/uneven under all that pressure.
Or to put it another way, even if the contestants were less varied in skin colour/neuro-wiring/sexual orientation/whatever else you find problematic, there would still be people having disasters even though they were generally very good bakers.

Oops - that was a typo but now I’m wondering if it also might have been a Freudian slip!

But we don't know if they are terrible, or if they fell apart under the pressure of the tent. It's like the difference between answering a radio quiz at home or actually being live on air. None of us know how we would cope with that stress unless we've done it.

There has only been 1 week, far too soon to declare any of them 'truly terrible'. As others have said, the pressure of the tent and not being used to the environment and equipment might have resulted in some under-performing. You only have to look back at previous seasons to see evidence of brilliant bakers who go to bits when one thing goes wrong. A couple of series ago Rahul had an awful week that included producing a cake that was actually inedible, he went on to win the whole thing.

It might also be that some of them just aren't that great when it comes to cake but are fabulous with bread and pastry.

MarilynMerlot · 29/09/2026 19:02

My godson has the exact mannerisms as Danni and is absolutely autistic (even down to the fixing old electricals) . Kind of feeling the same pain as when I see him in social situations because I know he’s doing everything he can to sound like ‘regular guy!’ and it’s so jarring :( I kind of feel for her personally

pineapplecrushed · 29/09/2026 19:07

it is a bad thing. Normalising throuples means theoretically there is no argument for 4, 5,6, 7 people in a relationship. So then will there be a push for a group to be able to marry? 1 man and 5 women? 7 men who want to adopt? So now we are in polygamy territory. There is nothing wrong with a society having a norm. 2 person pair bonds have been the most productive and successful way to organise a society.

Oh, so it’s one man having two partners you’re particularly exercised about.
Well, another argument against Gabe being on Bake Off on this thread is that throuples are not usual/common and so don’t represent most people… so, seeing as it’s so unusual, it’s hardly likely to insinuate itself into the fabric of society and English law, surely?

Theoretically 2 pair bonds may have been the best way to organise society, but many, many people have failed to make them work. Affairs and divorce are absolutely commonplace in traditional couple relationships. You could argue it's better to have an official throuple than one of a couple having a secret affair. It's not harming anyone else.

Personally it's hard enough work trying to maintain a relationship with one person, I can't imagine having the energy for a throuple. But if some young people want to experiment a bit with different relationship structures, it really doesn't affect me in any way.

'Oh, so it’s one man having two partners you’re particularly exercised about.' How do you work that out? That it's particularly that combination? I think the norm is a pair bond and while people are free to be in a relationship with whomever, there shouldn't be a push to normalise throuples. This person was chosen because he is in a throuple.

no you can't argue that, because you don't have the data on throuples. I'd hazard a guess that a throuple is more likely to be 'toxic' as there is most certainly more often one person who is not entirley on board or perhas coerced by a dominant partner to accept a third. I didn't say that people can't freely enter into whatever relationship they like. We don't have to choose, as a society, to normailise it.

Watching Nigella it’s not just her voice that’s off, I think she’s actually having trouble eating normally rather than doing the ‘naughty’ thing

What I meant was that previously you sounded affronted by everyone who you called a DEI hire, but now I realise it’s particularly this throuple thing that you can’t deal with.
AFAIC, all relationships are fraught with potential risk and can easily crumble. The high rate of divorce among straight couples doesn’t exactly recommend heterosexual marriage.

canklesmctacotits · 29/09/2026 21:25

HRTFT but

(1) I completely agree re first few posters re Danni
(2) I was shocked by how the set hadn’t been adapted for Molly as someone with zero understanding of what life in a wheelchair is like
(3) told me DC they can learn a lot from how Molly had a bit of a cry and then got on with making the most of the situation
(4) was prepared to intensely dislike drag queen thruple guy but actually took to him a fair bit and then he had me fully in the “different from the person you see in the mirror” bit
(5) was shocked at how large Nigella’s bites were
(6) loved her vocab and loved her perspicacity re thruple guy
(7) was unsurprised that northern gay hairdresser looked to Nigella as a diva, she’s an uber-woman to a certain type of male (I vaguely knew her 20 years ago, she def attracts The Gays!)
(8) was quite touched that the young self-taught fella with the basic cake got a near-perfect result
(9) was surprised that the Portuguese lady with the trout pout found the self-portrait narcissistic (I’d agree and was quite touched by that reflection).

I’ve always loved Bake Off for the insights into ordinary people and their sometimes extraordinary lives.

SummaLuvin · 29/09/2026 21:46

WRT adaptions for Molly she put up a video on TikTok and Instagram advising that she worked with the bakeoff team to get a set up she really liked.

The bench was lowered. There is an empty space under the counter so she can roll under it. She has an additional lower table - something she’d never thought of herself but now has in her own home. The disappearing oven door lets her get much closer. She also has a member of crew available to her to get things in and out of the oven and other such tasks. She has said she was very pleased with the adaptations. Her dropping the cake was just really bad luck.

canklesmctacotits · 29/09/2026 21:50

Oh, thanks for that addition @SummaLuvin. I’ll tell my DC that next week. Pleased to hear it.

I think it's because she has veneers so has to bite on the side which looks a bit odd.
