To think that Burnham’s words are going to haunt his premiership?

‘…national security can’t come at the expense of social security…’

That they are a one issue poster.

There are numerous posters who only post on politics - even when you sign up to MN, you can elect to choose the topics that interest you.

Why would a legend be forgotten?

A legend..that sold off everything
Rtb unmitigated disaster that's come home to roost.
Uk benefit bill would be a lot less if the biggest chunk of UC wasn't going to private landlords.

HurryUpMrPostman · 10/09/2026 11:41

The UK is in a mess. So is lots of Europe to be fair but where the UK used to be 'somewhere in the middle' of bond rates paid by G7 countries we are now the highest. In other words the bond market views us as the most risky to lend to out of all the G7.

If our govt managed to stop borrowing today and didn't borrow one more penny, our interest bill is still going to increase. Older bonds falling due for payment will have to be refinanced at current rates which are much higher. So you can see that our outgoings are going up even in the unlikely event we can stop borrowing.

The only way out is to reduce our debt which reduces interest but also signals to the market we are digging ourselves out. That in turn hopefully leads to them lending to us at lower rates.

Ideal world we build growth and increase economic activity so more money comes in. I haven't seen anything that suggests this is happening. I've only seen taxes on more things being suggested.

So we need to take our pot of money and split it differently and it needs to be drastic.
By drastic I mean things like care homes for sen children rather than paying out lots of money individually. They can be cared for and given some education there. Everyone is going to shout loudly but that sticks to our money plan and they are still 'ok'. Perhaps not great but not starving on the street either.

Now we need to apply a similar outlook to each and every area of spending. So state pension age increased with immediate effect to say 70. Triple lock gone and it increases in line with inflation or something. Yip that is going to be painful and lots of outrage but people will still get a pension just not as good as currently.

NHS - how about something really simple like we all buy an NHS 'card' for a fixed cost say £500 per year. A bit like paying for the yearly perscription. It's not ideal because there will still be wastage and missed appointments but it's a start to making people realise that we just can't afford free healthcare anymore. Ideally people would pay per service but that is more costly to implement. We should kept vaccinations free as we don't want the return of old diseases.

Welfare - All mental health conditions should have money stopped and therapy/medication instead. People who really do need help will take it gladly. People who are milking the system will lose their money and not bother going to the therapy because it's hard work.

Anyway I think you all get the drift. The changes have to be severe and tough shit to all the moaning.

There are lots of easy ones to do as well - yes WFA should go. Fuck the moaning. Immigrants should be given tents, water and bread. Those in real danger will still come. Those milking the system will stop coming.

Yes we should fund defence properly because it's just an essential service and without it quite frankly we are sitting ducks. We no longer have our old allies and world order is changing. It could also help boost our economy/manufacturing.

Other obvious savings are things like housing benefit. If you need your rent paid because you can't afford your own place paid for by you then you get something very basic like halls of residences. So a room each, a canteen. Very basic so you are not on the street. Cost hugely down. Yes there will be screaming and shouting. So let them. They have to realise it's now or never to turn things around.

Anyway I think you all get the drift. Do I think AB is going to do a good job. Probably not. It is going to take someone really tough to stand up to the public and turn the ship around. The only person I can see that might be able to do it is restore party. I don't agree with all their policies but the majority are sensible and truthful.

I mean wouldn't the UK be a great country to attack if you were going to attack anyone. Weakly defended, poor finances, poor leadership but still with the old reputation of 'Great Britain' I mean that would be quite a coup to take down a country that used to rule the world.

There is going to be lots and lots of changes required or we don't survive. Simple.

You have not looked at costings.
Care in the community is significantly cheaper than care in facilities. This is because the provider of the facility usually requires a profit, and the unpaid labour of family carers is lost.
Similarly ESA is £95 per week. There is no way this would cover the costs of meaningful therapy, and how would the person eat and house thenselves until they could recover enough to work and persuade an employer they were the best applicant in a tough jobs market?
You have also not considered the politics.
How many landlords would support a move that cost them their tax payer subsidised income stream?
How many employers would want to pay higher wages when they currently enjoy a tax payer subsidised workforce?
How many pensioners would vote for a party that reduced their income?
How many people want to see fields of tents springing up?
Its not as easy as it looks this welfare cutting business, is it?

TemperanceWest · 10/09/2026 11:54

Apart from anything else, that will cost a huge amount of money. Why do you think Thatcher introduced Care in the Community?

So state pension age increased with immediate effect to say 70. Triple lock gone

Which means even fewer jobs for the young and an increase in the disabilityand unemployment benefits bill as people become too ill to work or can't get work as employers are not known for their love of employing people 55+. I don't disagree with looking at the triple lock.

Other obvious savings are things like housing benefit. If you need your rent paid because you can't afford your own place paid for by you then you get something very basic like halls of residences. So a room each, a canteen. Very basic so you are not on the street

Again very expensive. Where are these halls of residence going to come from? Where will they be located? What about people with children? What about people who only need HB temporarily? Won't landlords be a bit unhappy if their tenants break their tenancy agreements?

I could go on, but you get the picture.

I think a lot of issues need looking at.

However ideas over practical application seems to be a universal failure by every party atm.

There's just hot air and no real thought given to HOW we solve problems effectively.

Immigrants should be given tents, water and bread. Those in real danger will still come. Those milking the system will stop coming.
See I don't even believe this. We live in a post truth era with lots of criminal gangs who profit from people smuggling. Promises of a better economic future will still persist on social media and will draw in economic migrants from countries where the reality of their life is ALREADY a tent, water and bread and no employment and there is no possibility of any other opportunity there. Its selling the 'British Dream' through misinformation where you MIGHT get the opportunity to make things better because there IS work available that is paid an amount that looks incredible compared to your own currency because you have no concept of the cost of living.

You also have to consider who benefits politically from pushing this misinformation other than the smugglers. There are plenty of hostile nations that may wish to politically destabilise the UK with it.

Just this one example alone, highlights the lack of depth of thought and consideration that's going on, and how you need to think about push factors which aren't related to conflict (environment change, high levels of unemployment, food shortages, exploitation, hostile nations) as well as pull factors.

The electorate want simple politics and simple solutions and are not willing to listen to more complex discussions. I think this overall dumbing down on understanding political issues owes a huge amount to social media in its own right. Young people are incredibly ill informed on general knowledge compared to a generation ago through little fault of their own ime.

It’s very insightful. It shows for the whole world to see what an absolute bitch the woman was and how little she regarded people. Real people.

Nice bit of internal misogyny there. Isn't that one of MN's favourite phrases?

baroqueandblue · 10/09/2026 12:25

Greyrock79 · 10/09/2026 07:51

Meanwhile, Netanyahu appears to have sussed out Burnham and Miliband, with their sanctions.

Yep, you guessed it - simply pandering to their voter base.

And your point is..? Because even if it's true, how would that be any different to any other politician?

Seriously, you want to learn to manage your own expectations of reality a bit better. Might stop you making pointless comments on pointless threads 🤷🏻‍♂️

dustabsorber · 10/09/2026 12:26

War is not a totally bad thing. World War one got women the vote, World War 2 ushered in the welfare state. A World War 3 will bring an end to capitalism. Plus all the inventions that people take for granted. Radio, television, computers all by products of war.

If you’re ‘suspicious’ about a poster take it up with mnhq.

Yes I do wish they would. The suspicion is getting tedious now. Who cares if somebody is a one topic poster? It's clearly on the topic which pp feels uncomfortable being discussed.
