To think that Burnham’s words are going to haunt his premiership?

‘…national security can’t come at the expense of social security…’

I think the man just existing will haunt his premiership.

PersephoneParlormaid · 10/09/2026 07:20

He’s another that won’t last.

curious79 · 10/09/2026 07:22

I think the fact that no one even voted him to lead the party let alone lead the country is the only haunting he needs.

TickedOffAndALittleFedUp · 10/09/2026 07:23

I hope they do, what an idiot!

houseonthehill · 10/09/2026 07:26

Possibly, as people can be a bit thick. ‘Social security’ is clearly a much wider thing than ‘benefits’, which I assume you are thinking of.

LuckyHazelFox · 10/09/2026 07:39

Without protecting our national security, there won't be any need for social security. He's no Churchill, is he?

Yup, it never works - Gordon Brown and Rishi Sunak both became PM without a vote and neither lasted long. Both well and truly voted out by the public at their first general election. If AB survives to the GE, which is highly unlikely, he won’t win it.

Notsosweetcaroline · 10/09/2026 07:42

Didn’t take long for his true colours to show through.

TruffleSlinky · 10/09/2026 07:42

No I don't, people will have forgotten by next week and moved on to the next headline.

They were showing through at PMQs yesterday. I was waiting for that trade unionist demeanour to come shining through.

Whenthecriwdsayno · 10/09/2026 07:45

People, and the press, shouldn’t have been calling for Starmer to resign every two weeks.

RedToothBrush · 10/09/2026 07:47

The markets do not look like this is a going to be much of an option tbh.

ilovesooty · 10/09/2026 07:47

Here we go again. 🙄

ExtraOnions · 10/09/2026 07:47

Another anti-Burnham thread … and before 8am as well, is that a record ?

HelpMeGetThrough · 10/09/2026 07:48

I think his eyebrows and eyelashes will haunt more.

I like Burnham and want him to do well.

I'm also looking at the global forces and going fuck he's screwed.

LuckyHazelFox · 10/09/2026 07:49

@ExtraOnions you wouldn't be deflecting would you? I was hounded for that yesterday. Are we not allowed to criticise the PM?

I’m not so sure.

Many haven’t forgotten the ‘who do we tax more to pay benefits to others’?

Meanwhile, Netanyahu appears to have sussed out Burnham and Miliband, with their sanctions.

Yep, you guessed it - simply pandering to their voter base.

Not as good as previous threads - 'we hate Andy Burnham'...because 'we hate Andy Burnham'...boring. Please be more creative in your work..

If you read beyond the headlines he is saying that he isn't going to make crude cuts at welfare directly for NS. Rather he is going to find ways to increase national security in other ways whilst slowly reducing the welfare bill.

Crude cuts on welfare usually fails and often ends up costing the taxpayer, in the long run, more. People often end up losing their houses, and in basic terms homelessness is expensive for the state, children are at more risk of going into care, crime rates often rise. Even if you don't care about the impact on the people, all of these things cost more financially to manage.
