AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

Is there an expectation that people's toilets should have an air freshener in? Like a spray air freshener?

We always have air freshener in both our toilets in case friends or family get caught short when visiting us or even to freshen the bathroom after having a wee if necessary, so I hate it if I go to a friend/family members house and they have none.

I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?

We have a glade air freshener at work that sprays into the space where the wash handbasins are for example.

Nice to have, but would not expect it. Being able to open a window is better.

tbh I’m amazed that someone can wait till they get home. Surely it does you no good to hang on? When you’ve got to go you’ve got to go!

I rarely need to poo that bad I can’t wait for an hour or 2 if I’m at someone’s house. How embarrassing and gross to have to do a smelly shit when a dinner guest.

Notanewuser1 · 10/09/2026 07:20

Urgh; spraying unnecessary chemicals around is awful. Open a window and take your own VIPoo spray.

Yes if I have t go I just go, toilets are designed for it

Avie29 · 10/09/2026 07:24

I have an air freshener in my toilet but no spray, if anyone poos in there we bleach the toilet, wash our hands and generally the smell of a bit of bleach and hand soap clears the smell- i have no windows in my toilets.

BCBird · 10/09/2026 07:24

Why would u need freshner after a wee?

SwanUpmanship · 10/09/2026 07:25

I don't mind the smell of air freshener but a lot of people don't like it and some are allergic to it, so, no, I wouldn't expect to see it in other people's toilets.

I wouldn't normally pick things up like air freshener in someone else's loo and start using them, save the obvious soap and towel for washing hands.

Yanbu tbh

Theres this tiktokker who i love and think is amazing, but she refuses to have a toilet brush! I'm like, what if someone (usually a man) has no choice but to poop in your toilet and finds he cant clean it?! 😩😩😩

Worst nightmare on holiday 😔

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 10/09/2026 07:28

I've never bought a spray air freshener in my forty-three years and I'm not going to start now. Open the window.

Whenthecriwdsayno · 10/09/2026 07:29

Some peoples poo doesn’t smell. It hits the water quick and is flushed away.

You couldn’t tell that I have done a poo there is no after smell unless I’m ill with the runs or something.

There are some people who leave clouds of poo smell in the toilet but it’s normally men or women with bowel issues.

Whenthecriwdsayno · 10/09/2026 07:31

Also not every family leaves skid marks going down the toilet. I also have no toilet brush and there doesn’t seem to be marks.

Trust Mumsnetters to have perfect poos

TheOccupier · 10/09/2026 07:35

Air freshener is frightfully common/non-U so you won't find much support for it on Mumsnet! I don't know anyone who has it in their home. Open the window, make sure the extractor fan works, and in extremis, light a match.

ItsAlwaysTwins · 10/09/2026 07:36

Shit plus noxious air freshener results in a terrible, noisome pong. I know this from growing up with a dad who’d have a long a stinky dump, then liberally spray the downstairs loo with Glade or the like.

I have never bought a spray air freshener in my life.

Off topic, but do people often shit in other people's loos? If so, I envy you. I have shy bowels. I physically cannot poo anywhere but my own loo; even if I really need to go, it just refuses to come out. It makes for some very uncomfortable workdays if I don't manage my morning poo.

Same but some people have conditions so can’t help it. Not having a window in a bathroom is disgusting.

MassivelyOverstimulated · 10/09/2026 07:38

Air fresheners, scented candles, diffusers are essentially chemicals. It’s thought they can interfere with your hormones and cause health issues. Once I read that it even made me question perfume. And I honestly wish I hadn’t read it, because I bloody love a scented candle.

Never! I don’t have shy bowels, I have incredibly polite ones. Unless you have bowel issues, and I feel incredibly sorry for anyone who does, there’s just no need.

Londonrach1 · 10/09/2026 07:45

Yabu. Some people don't like the chemicals in the air. Their toilet their choice.

SleepingisanArt · 10/09/2026 07:45

OP would hate my house! No air freshener, no reed diffusers, no bowls of pot pourri, no scented candles - nothing that will affect my breathing or give my husband a migraine. We have managed almost 40 years of marriage without having any of the above in our home. Never needed it despite having raised children and had cats who became very elderly!

DrumsPleaseFab · 10/09/2026 07:46

I do not know what is in them but they are a migraine trigger for me

our toilet has a large window which w open to freshen the air

that way you get actual fresh air 😁😁😁

Men clean toilets? Dates and times please🤣

beAsensible1 · 10/09/2026 07:48

No, just open the window and close the door

MurkyMo · 10/09/2026 07:50

I'd be hoping they'd remove the revolting toxic chemical "air fresheners". Air destroyers more like.

Sassylovesbooks · 10/09/2026 07:52

I don't use spray air fresheners simply because we have a cat, and some can be toxic. The plugin ones can be even more toxic for animals.

TheSunIsAlwaysThere · 10/09/2026 07:53

My son insisted I buy a toilet brush when we moved house. I'd always just put bleach down. My then husband said that wasn't cleaning the loo, just covering the poo.

I also have asthma and pets so wouldn't have any sprays. I did try the coloured tablets in the cistern but it's too much faff to take the lid off and I wouldn't bother again. I used diffusers as my bathroom is tiny and I wanted the house to smell nice but they are finished and the hose smells fine now. For those saying they just use bleach and when it's mentioned as for health and environmental reasons, isn't bleach as bad?
