AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

Is there an expectation that people's toilets should have an air freshener in? Like a spray air freshener?

We always have air freshener in both our toilets in case friends or family get caught short when visiting us or even to freshen the bathroom after having a wee if necessary, so I hate it if I go to a friend/family members house and they have none.

I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?

We have a glade air freshener at work that sprays into the space where the wash handbasins are for example.

Yabu. Air fresheners smell horrible and are bad for us & the environment. Just open the window.

queenofsky · 10/09/2026 07:54

honestly, it's so weird that people prefer to risk their health with synthetic chemicals vs put up with a temporary bad smell.

I don’t know how much people are shitting or what kind of food you’re eating needing a toilet brush after using the toilet, is it really necessary after use? I have a toilet brush that was used for cleaning the bathroom on its weekly deep clean.
If so, put a layer on tissue into the toilet before using it.

Keeptoiletssafe · 10/09/2026 07:57

To be honest, after researching toilet safety for the last few years, if I saw an old fashioned air freshener unit pointing in my direction, I would be checking to see if it had a hidden camera in it.

Don’t know anyone who uses them.

Air fresheners smell worse than shit and give me a headache, so no. Plus with an open window, the whole thing can be relatively discreet, spraying that stuff announces to the world "I have just done a massive stinky shit".

Tallestone · 10/09/2026 07:57

i can't be around sprays I can't breathe. Dp has to go in a different room to spray his deodorant.I can't think of anything worse than that an air freshener spray in the bathroom

bananaobama · 10/09/2026 07:58

Nope: i hate the stuff

the window is usually open

My DH after many years of my moaning, switched to a roll on. And the house smells much better!

YABU. Air fresheners cause indoor pollution which is known to be bad for human health.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26354370/

The above talks about the volatile organic compounds that air fresheners release and “These pollutants then adversely affect human health, in many ways such as damage to the central nervous system, alteration of hormone levels, etc.”

Open the window. Much healthier. Also helps to reduce humidity levels.

We're on holiday at the moment and stopping in a large caravan with two loos, and not having anyone visit. But we have an air freshener in each toilet that we brought from home. I hate toilet smells.

For those that say their shit doesn't smell, are you serious??? Of course it does! 😅

You can’t smell your own shit. It’s a thing.

DisforDarkChocolate · 10/09/2026 07:59

If this concerned me I'd carry some of those loo drops you can buy.

runnerducky · 10/09/2026 08:01

We don’t have air freshener because shit mixed with artificial flowers is no nicer than just shit. Air freshener never hides the smell. We do have a bottle of VIPoo though!

Carry a box of matches with you. Brilliant for neutralising any nasty nifs.

I tried this the other day. It makes absolutely no difference to any odours.

You can if you go out of the loo and then go back in!

Why? It actually annoys me to not see one if I'm honest.

That makes you sound, quite frankly, more weird.

Wow, I’d annoy you then. No chemical shite to spray about in my house, I’d rather you opened a window. I hate the stuff.

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/09/2026 08:11

I hate air freshener. I'd rather open a window.

Lemonorzo · 10/09/2026 08:11

Nothing worse than air freshener and poo mixed together and the smell lasts much longer. I have a window behind my toilet which is open most of the time anyway.

PIL had air fresheners in every room, they also smoked and didn’t open windows. The air in their house was like a fog. MIL bought me a pile of them once so my house could smell ‘fresh’ and I threw them in the bin.

Being vegan helps, I have a very sensitive nose and can often smell things others can't detect at all, but there's a reason dog muck smells worse than horse muck. Meat=more pungent poo.

I do agree that the smell of poo coupled with a flowery smell is really disgusting. Not that I like the scent of poo but it is much worse when air freshener is added. Its like it sticks to it!

And yes, terrible for the environment too.

freerangethighs · 10/09/2026 08:13

If they weren't going to use it, surely that would explain why they don't have it? And if it impacts them negatively, they're hardly going to stock it for other people to use in a space where they will have to smell it.

AngelinaFibres · 10/09/2026 08:14

Generally, when you visit people, you use their downstairs toilet. Hell would freeze over before I did a poo in someone's toilet that opened into a hallway area. Since menopause I have to make sure I poop before leaving the house in the morning. If I don't my body will decide ,in the afternoon , that it is going and it is going NOW.

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 10/09/2026 08:14

Just carry a small box of wooden matches with you. One match after a poo and it's all gone. Then, please wet the match before you toss it in the garbage.

MrsPapillon · 10/09/2026 08:15

I’d never poo on somebody else’s loo anyway, I only go on my own toilet.

Anarchy99 · 10/09/2026 08:20

Presumably all those people who are horrified by air freshener think their shit doesn’t stink 🤣

Or they only shit in their own homes even if they go away for days!

SweetcornFritter · 10/09/2026 08:21

I would make sure I went before visiting a friend’s house and hold it in until I got home.
