AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

Is there an expectation that people's toilets should have an air freshener in? Like a spray air freshener?

We always have air freshener in both our toilets in case friends or family get caught short when visiting us or even to freshen the bathroom after having a wee if necessary, so I hate it if I go to a friend/family members house and they have none.

I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?

We have a glade air freshener at work that sprays into the space where the wash handbasins are for example.

I hate air freshener. The smell is always awful and it ends up stinking of floral shit, it never gets rid of the stench. Best thing you can do is air the room out and stick some bleach down the loo.

Onefairfish · 10/09/2026 06:40

I find opening the window does the trick.

I find opening the window does the trick.

Flushing the loo before you stand up also minimises the smell, ime.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 10/09/2026 06:42

Absolutely! I’ve never not had a room spray and I expect it to be used!

8misskitty8 · 10/09/2026 06:44

Bring your own or that V.I.Poo stuff if your planning on having a crap at your friends house.
But opening a window or having the extractor on gets rid of any smells. All air fresheners do is turn the smell into a floral poo smell. 🤢

LathkillDale · 10/09/2026 06:44

I am allergic to things like that. I sometimes start coughing and sneezing in shops. A doctor in the family told me, often the scent of pine is added to air conditioning - I get hay fever from some trees!

Ditto DH. We are not taking double doses of antihistamines due to unnecessary chemicals in our own house!

No wipes are flushable - they all cause blockages in the sewers.

Agree with @NibliaBiblia even said
“ flushable” wipes, are not. Be prepared to call DynoRod, in the future, if you keep chucking wipes down your loo!

I've been to lots of houses where you can't get at the window or there is none. Scrambling around looking for bleach is not my idea of fun.

Off topic, but do people often shit in other people's loos? If so, I envy you. I have shy bowels. I physically cannot poo anywhere but my own loo; even if I really need to go, it just refuses to come out. It makes for some very uncomfortable workdays if I don't manage my morning poo.

I have a reed diffuser in the downstairs bog. They can open a window.

Reed diffusers can open windows? Who knewGrin

TremendousFlatulence · 10/09/2026 06:55

Anyone happy breathing in synthetic flowery chemicals with gay abandon and using scented loo roll might as well just go smoke 20 Woodbines a day. The effect will be the same in the end. That shit is so toxic. Just open the window or make use of some kind of natural scented oil.
I absolutely shudder to think what scented loo roll is doing to the pH balance of your undercarriage.

My cat can open windows. She often does it if she manages to get into the bathroom with you. The bathroom window is the one she likes to look out of the most because the tree (and therefore the birds) is directly opposite it. I imagine she's made a few people paranoid after she's followed them into my bathroom and then opened the window on them while they're going about their business Grin

OrdinaryGirl · 10/09/2026 06:56

I really, really dislike air freshener and we don’t use it, but we keep an odour neutraliser one in our downstairs loo (which has a painted-shut window - not our doing - and the world’s most geriatric extractor fan).
This is in case a visitor is caught short - it feels like the kind thing to do.

tbh I’m amazed that someone can wait till they get home. Surely it does you no good to hang on? When you’ve got to go you’ve got to go!

somanychristmaslights · 10/09/2026 06:58

Nothing worse than a mix of poo and air freshener smell! It’s horrendous. Or what magic one do you use that automatically neutralises the poo smell rather than ending up with a god awful mix??

IStillHearTheWaves · 10/09/2026 06:59

The stench of air freshener us worse than the smell of shit!

Also have a reed diffuser and a window.

TerfOnATrain · 10/09/2026 07:01

You would love my downstairs shower room, it also has two cat litter trays in there. When the cats have a shit, trust me, no air freshener under the sun gets rid of that stink.

Just remove the offending object (at least human poo goes down the loo and is flushed quickly) and open a window and close the door. Smell has gone in minutes.

MyCatIsWeird · 10/09/2026 07:06

Just open a window. If Im at home, i will ask people to give it 5 mins.
We all poo, no one's smells of roses. I don't want a nasty synthetic scent as well as poo.

PersephoneParlormaid · 10/09/2026 07:08

I don’t want to breathe in chemicals, just open the window.

ShrinkyDinkyPetal · 10/09/2026 07:08

Aesops post poo drops are your friend

SomeOtherUser · 10/09/2026 07:09

Newsflash: the putrid stench of air freshener blended with the smell of poo announces that you have just had a poo more definitively than any poo smell would by itself. 😂

ProudBlackMomma · 10/09/2026 07:12

Who would use that cheap and nasty stiff? It’s revolting. Try Aesop poo drops if you need anything to mask the smell. Handy in a house with boys I find!

CoffeeandCakeBreak · 10/09/2026 07:13

Aerosols and strong perfume trigger my asthma. I'm not going to have one in my house for guests. If I go in the room afterwards it would trigger my asthma.

I don't think I would have one anyway.

Mooselander · 10/09/2026 07:15

YABVU. Putting artificial smells into your house like that is incredibly toxic.

Coldwetlettuce · 10/09/2026 07:16

Did you do an especially stinky poo OP, the stink of which wafted through to where all your friends were sitting and you got busted? Now you’re blaming them for not having accessories (which no normal person has & which are terrible for the environment) to cover up your crime? I totally get leaving skid marks in someone’s toilet and secretly getting the rage with them for not having a toilet brush. Air freshener is weird, however. Firstly most people don’t use sprays anymore cos it’s bad for the planet, and secondly the spray just mixes in with the poo smell and creates a kind of disgustingly sweet pooey smell. It’s gross and as soon as everyone else smells it (or hears the panicked spraying from the bathroom) they immediately know you’ve just done a shite anyway, so may as well not bother!
