AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

Is there an expectation that people's toilets should have an air freshener in? Like a spray air freshener?

We always have air freshener in both our toilets in case friends or family get caught short when visiting us or even to freshen the bathroom after having a wee if necessary, so I hate it if I go to a friend/family members house and they have none.

I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?

We have a glade air freshener at work that sprays into the space where the wash handbasins are for example.

Bleach. We don't use loo brushes.

Periodically I throw in some neat limescale remover.

We don't do any cleaning products with parfume so you won't find any here.

They are awful things full of chemicals no cant stand them

No allergies or asthma or anything just all hate them

Surely you just open a window and ventilate if needed.
If your wee smells so bad you need an air freshener, I’d suggest drinking more water and visiting the GP if it continues.

I don't think an air freshener actually helps or saves anyone's blushes. You just get an awful flowery poo smell. Unless you've got an digestive issue the smells usually pass relatively quickly. We've all had a curry poo or something that's particularly nasty but there's no air freshener in the world helping that. Also maybe you should explore why this actually makes you angry, people have different preferences and reflect this in their choices for their own homes, why does it make you angry that they like different things to you? What's going on there? People can't accommodate every preference and shouldn't if something like air freshener is disliked by them. Are you actually using a lot of people's toilets to go for a shit or just like to scope them out and get riled up if they don't have air freshener

Air fresheners don't freshen the air, they just make it smell synthetically fragrant and IMO make it smell way worse, especially when mixed with the smell of poo.

But then I've been tempted to start a thread in the past about perfume and aftershave being unreasonable, so maybe I'm sensitive to smells! I hate having to smell it. Especially hate it when people are wearing it when holding my baby, and then my baby stinks of it afterwards. Also hate coming home from someone's house and smelling of their perfume cos it's so bloody strong.

we don't have air freshener in the loo either. I can't use them or diffusers or smelly candles, plug ins etc due to asthma . What use is a spray bottle with diluted dettol and spray that instead.

I'd rather smell someone's lingering fart than those so-called air-fresheners, which make gag. At least the fart is a natural smell. And the air fresheners don't dispel it, they just layer with it.

I've never felt the desire to spray my home with assorted unknown chemicals, no. Or produce lots of empty aerosols for landfill. Our bathrooms have windows which all open easily.

We are also a family that use matches. Sometimes two are needed, but they are pretty effective!

Open a window and or light a match. Absolutely no need for synthetic smells that don't mask, but make it smell worse.

Air fresheners stink. They make a horrid poo/flowery concoction that lingers. Open a window and move on.

We don't have air fresheners. I have asthma and allergies, and my not using it myself would not stop me from having an asthma attack if you were spraying it around because you're ashamed that you defecate.

We have an air filter that zaps smells pretty quickly (allergies) and windows that open, if the fact that I might learn you sometimes shit bothers you that much.

To be honest though, I'd rather smell your shit than not be able to breathe.

No. Air freshener is horrid stuff and doesn’t mask a smelly poo, just mingles with it.

at most a reed diffuser and a window!

No wipes are flushable - they all cause blockages in the sewers.

Was going to say this. I hate synthetic air fresheners - especially the sprays, as they smell awful and always catch in my throatS

I keep a box of matches in my toilet. Light one, wave it over the toilet bowl for a few seconds and then blow it out. It completely removes any smells, and the smell of a blown out match is much nicer than a whiff of shit mixed with a hint of Jasmine and Pine.

I hate air fresheners, and the ones that squirt are vile!

I don't have them in my bathroom and no one that I know do either.

I think you’re missing the point of most of the replies. It doesn’t save anyone from embarrassment- it adds to it. A lot of people are saying they find the smell of air freshener mixed with poo worse (and I agree).
It’s not that embarrassing to have a poo, everyone does it! No one wants to leave a smell in someone else’s house but opening a window/ extractor fan and leaving it a few minutes usually helps. Because “EVERYONE” you know has a preference for what I think are artificial sickly floral scents (which for me linger much longer than poo and do not “freshen” the air) doesn’t make anyone more right or wrong than others.

You might be allergic if they give you headaches. I'm allergic to some fragrances (and all aerosols), and one of the symptoms is migraines. We do use some fragranced things because I know what I will react to and what I won't. Floral scents affect me more than things like linen, cotton, or vanilla. I can't be around any of those plug-in things, but some reed diffusers, candles, and some Zoflora fragrances are fine.

To the person who sprays poo pouri, I'd be really pissed off if you did that in my house. If you need to shit in my loo fine, it's natural, we all do it, but please refrain from trying to kill me in my own home. And some fragrances are really bad for pets. I'd much rather smell your shit than have you poison my cat.
