AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

HangryBrickShark · 09/09/2026 23:11

Is there an expectation that people's toilets should have an air freshener in? Like a spray air freshener?

We always have air freshener in both our toilets in case friends or family get caught short when visiting us or even to freshen the bathroom after having a wee if necessary, so I hate it if I go to a friend/family members house and they have none.

I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?

We have a glade air freshener at work that sprays into the space where the wash handbasins are for example.

I have never understood where the idea for air fresheners came from. Assume some enterprising American.
Life involves smells, some of which are important.
If you have issues with normal, biological smells, open a window.
I would judge someone, who had diffusers etc. on the basis that they were of an inferior demographic.

For God's sake, NOT EVERYONE HAS A WINDOW.

pollymere · 13/09/2026 13:25

Jilly Cooper would have probably joked that you're trying to be lower Middle Class because truly classy people wouldn't care or open a window.

I love the idea that in a place that reeks of horse poop you're worried about the toilet 😂

Absolutely, no!! Sorry but everyone's poop SMELLS and being vegan is no exception to that lol.

Yes, the particular foods you consume play a role in how your poop smells but it's only one small factor. Eating "rubbish" isn't the sole determinant of odor. Digestive factors, hormones, gut bacteria, whether you consume alcohol, conditions like diabetes or celiac, tolerances and allergies to things like gluten, activity level, OTC & Rx medications.... ALL play a role.
Eating clean definitely has an impact. Being vegan doesn't automatically mean one isn't eating rubbish, either.
Common to have freshener in the bathroom.

For (I think the) third time, I didn't say vegan poo (mine or otherwise) didn't/doesn't smell 'lol'.
I said it doesn't linger, as in you could walk into the bathroom after me and not know if I'd been for a number 2.

I did also mention medical conditions. I also clarified that if I do eat unhealthily this does change.

Fortunately yes, a lot of food I can eat is unhealthy (had a rare day 'off' healthy eating today and am going out for a couple of glasses of wine later, in quite a good mood about it) 🙂

No, I don't want a load of synthetic headache-inducing horrible smelling chemicals in my house. I'll take my chance with the poo 💩

This

my partner gets horrific allergies to that shit that lasts for hours

open a window and squirt a few pumps of hand soap is enough

I didn't know that. Thank you.

Don't actually do that - it may well blow up your toilet!!

HangryBrickShark · 13/09/2026 10:47

No not at all although I'm surprised at the responses from some.

We have air freshener at the stables too in the toilet although no window or vent in there.

I'm traditional working class, live in a 4 bed two toilet house.

The spray I use is the fabulosa room spray so no aerosol cans. Sorry I didn't make that clear. I'm no eco warrior but try and help the environment by helping where I can, recycling, litter picking, reducing landfill schemes at work.

You even make your horses use an actual human toilet?! Grin

TaptheCap · 13/09/2026 21:25

Another reason I won't have air freshener in the house (along with many other scent related items) is that artificial fragrances are known hormone disruptors linked heavily to early on set puberty in girls and increasingly linked to reduced fertility. Whilst I'm beyond having babies, I due have a daughter who is pre-pubescent and I want to keep her that way as long as possible.

We're on holiday at the moment and stopping in a large caravan with two loos, and not having anyone visit. But we have an air freshener in each toilet that we brought from home. I hate toilet smells.

For those that say their shit doesn't smell, are you serious??? Of course it does! 😅

Actually it doesn't and afaik I've only ever met one person who's did: a flatmate from hell who stank the bathroom out every morning. She'd use all the hot water in the tank then follow it up with a 20 minute shit before leaving for work. The silly cow didn't even crack the window open to let the condensation or the absolutely rotten stink of her backside out. The ming from her 'cooking' (I use the term loosely) was nausea inducing too. She'd boil cabbage in tinned tomatoes for literally hours every night so I'm not surprised her back end reeked to high heaven. Needless to say I was delighted when that one moved out.

Her personal behaviour in dealing with it was obviously selfish and unacceptable; but you make it sound like a general value judgment: that only unreasonable, bad people ever do poos that stink. It's a normal human thing to need to do; and is not in the slightest shameful in itself.

Fairiefolk · Yesterday 08:35

You are being completely unreasonable and insufferable.

Don't be ridiculous. Everyone's poo smells. Often if you flush it away the smell doesn't linger but the poo itself always smells.

Yes, this is precisely what the Cranberries were eager to teach us: the importance of always flushing before you depart.

Poo smell mixed with air freshener smell is vile, way worse than just poo!

Same as when smokers come in and put perfume on, nope, vile.

emanresu3 · Yesterday 12:27

Air Freshners are carcinogenic

backformoreofthesame · Yesterday 12:30

My suspicion is that most poo smells get trapped by the water and the really bad smells are gas releases at the same tIme

If you don't have a window all the more reason not to use air fresheners. If you look on the cans they say to only use in a ventilated area.
I wonder why ...

We always spray in our house if someone poos. We live in a bungalow so poo stinks out the whole house otherwise, especially my 20 year old sons

Your bungalow doesn't have windows? I've spent a lot of my time in bungalows, they are very common where I'm from, and never ever have the whole bungalows been stunk out after someone's defecated. The smell certainly doesn't leave our own bathroom.

Just close the bathroom door afterwards and have the bathroom window open, a couple of minutes clears it for normal poo smells, extra toxic ones like your son's may need a good 20mins of fresh air to clear!

Sprays mixed with the aroma of shit are utterly vile. I'd rather walk into a bathroom prematurely following the previous occupants shit, than walk into that synthetic fragrance mixed with the shit smell 😑

We leave our bathroom window open all day, from morning until bedtime, there's no poo smell unless you go in within 5 mins of my DH 😄

FullLondonEye · Yesterday 16:01

I don't like walking into a bathroom that smells of someone's shit.

However walking into a bathroom that smells of someone's shit AND air freshener spray is much, much worse.

Do all of you 'we always spray' people think it actually smells better in there after spraying that stuff? I don't get it. To me it's so obviously worse - it also tends to spread more outside the door, and telegraphs to anyone around that you've just unloaded.

It's not that anyone likes the smell of shit - their own or anyone else's. It's just that shit plus air freshener tends to be much worse, stronger and more enduring.

Anarchy99 · Yesterday 16:04

Normally the worst crime on here is someone having a shit anywhere (including their own home) but mention air freshener and people lose their minds 🤣

Confusedbytheworld · Yesterday 18:41

That's because some of us (and that's a growing number) cannot walk into a room filled with air freshener without feeling seriously ill until we can get home, shed our clothes, scrub our skin and wash our hair. Even then consequences can occur for days after.

As someone that gets migraines from air freshener, shit is by far preferable.

If it’s a choice between an unpleasant but harmless smell and serious health impacts, it’s a no brainer isn’t it?
