AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

Is there an expectation that people's toilets should have an air freshener in? Like a spray air freshener?

We always have air freshener in both our toilets in case friends or family get caught short when visiting us or even to freshen the bathroom after having a wee if necessary, so I hate it if I go to a friend/family members house and they have none.

I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?

We have a glade air freshener at work that sprays into the space where the wash handbasins are for example.

@mymswashing you have smoke alarms in the loos???

A lot of workplaces do to stop people smoking in the loos.

I've never read such a load of sanctimonious bullshit in my life. People saying their shit doesn't stink. Smh
You are not being unreasonable. Most normal people use an air freshener and have one in the loo. At least 99% of the toilets I have ever been in.
Sorry but opening a window and a spray of the loo is the way forward.

I can only recall one or maybe two people in this whole thread who have claimed/hinted at that.

Nobody else on here is denying that their poo smells; but the point is that it's an unpleasant but natural smell that lasts a short amount of time (less if you open a window) - whereas air freshener is a load of toxic chemicals that don't actually cover the smell of the poo anyway, stink horrendously, and cause big problems for people with asthma and other breathing issues.

Imagine how embarrassing it would be if you'd lit a match to try to avoid anybody knowing what you'd done... then you set off the smoke alarm, so everybody rushes in - only to discover that it was you who'd done a smelly shit that raised the alarm!!

You are, quite frankly, weird.

Ahhh god that made me laugh

NewHere83 · 12/09/2026 23:49

We have Aesop poo drops and a reed diffuser. But if people have bowell problems I'd expect them to travel with their own means of dealing with it.

We also don't use toilet brushes. Heavy duty gloves with cleaning bits on them.

To be honest ...most of these air ' fresheners' are made up of nasty chemicals that our lungs don't want or need and I, for one, am fed up with smelling the sickly sweet smell of them everywhere , like the horrible vape smells ..ugh ! Open the bl**dy window if you want real " fresh air" !!

Carry a box of matches with you. Brilliant for neutralising any nasty nifs.

No, it really doesn’t - at most the sulphur smell of the kit match (temporarily) masks the smell

HiEarthlings · 13/09/2026 01:14

YABU.

YOUR preferences are null and void in someone else's bathroom!

I have sensory issues and cannot cope with strong artificial scents (I even have to deliberately go out of my way to avoid even walking past a Lush on the high street!), so those disgustingly unpleasant 'air fresheners' (there's a misnomer, if ever I heard one) are a definite no-no in my home. And if anyone dared to bring one in (I've seen some comments about people taking their own with them when they go out and about! 🤦🏼‍♂️) and had the audacity to use it, they'd never set foot in my home again. There's a lot more than 'asthma' to think about when it comes to using things like that, and people need to start realising that there are other people, with other issues, living in this world with them, and start acting accordingly...

Funnily enough I don’t generally stomp in dog shit on a daily basis. But, as you say, you do you.

Also where on earth do you live that there is so much dog shit? I haven’t seen any in years.

For goodness sake - just strike a match, and it eradicates the cause of the smell. It immediately burns the methane.

I don’t understand how people don’t know this!

They do but it’s not always possible. We have a specific rule about ANY fire source where I work. No window, no extractor fan. We generally prefer not to leave the smell of shit in the toilet for the next person as there is one toilet per floor.

Sweeney23 · 13/09/2026 02:45

Some people may be on a tighter budget than you and may not choose to spend money on this unnecessary item. Of course it’s unreasonable to expect everyone to do as you do in their own homes.

My husband has Crohn’s disease, I have IBS/Diverticulitis/Colitis. We have a permanent air freshener and a spray in our downstairs toilet and a selection of other air fresheners in our bathroom and both en suites. Our friends and family know about our disabilities (we have other physical disabilities as well as bowel disease) and I don’t care if there’s a smell and hopefully neither do they. We all poo and sometimes it stinks and frankly I don’t give a damn. If you come to our home and don’t like the smell - whether that’s air freshener, dog/cat or anything else I don’t care.

NewGirlInTown · 13/09/2026 03:17

Bathroom window should always be open. No need for synthetic flowery rubbish if you have fresh air.

Am I the only odd one that doesn’t have a window? People keep saying open one, I’ve got two bathrooms and neither have windows
none of the toilets at work have windows either

No, I don't have a window either. It's tedious to keep reading how 'crack' a window (not sure breaking glass is a good idea, just open it) is the sanctimonious response, followed by a dismissive laughing emoji.

I don't routinely use air fresheners at all, and my extractor fan is utterly useless, but living alone it's not too much of a problem. However, I always have a small air freshener spray in there for visitors to use as I do understand the discomfort about leaving a smell in other people's houses.

Tanjamaltija · 13/09/2026 05:43

Some of us do not use any kind of spray, not even deodorant. Take a box of matches with you, and light a couple inside the bowl, after you flush.

Berlinlover · 13/09/2026 07:25

Only on MN would people prefer the smell of shite to an air freshener.

smithsgj · 13/09/2026 08:17

I mean colour me peculiar but I never go to the loo in anyone's house except my gf's (and then I go to the upstairs or downstairs one, depending on where she isn't). I don't think she uses the one in my house either except to pee. I'm fine with using (clean) loos in pubs and out and about, but people's houses no way.

What I hate is in a hotel or wherever and you need to use the brush but either (a) there isn't one or (b) there is but it seems nobody has emptied the water from the brush holder for like ever. Isn't emptying the holder a normal household task, and something normals do after each use? Am I the only one who routinely bangs the brush on the toilet rim to lose the excess water? Nobody ever told me to do this, but unless you don't own a toilet (who?) then why would you not realise this is necessary?

Newbie8918 · 13/09/2026 08:20

Why would you even need one? Crack a window. Poo smells. It’s life. Even if there was a bottle and I went in after you, I’d smell poo, partially masked by a horrible synthetic smell.

BunnyLake · 13/09/2026 08:20

I have one of those little handbag sized sprays in my bag, just in case 🫣. I have air freshener sprays in my bathroom and downstairs loo.

SarzWix · 13/09/2026 08:42

GeorginaWilby · 12/09/2026 20:48

Not necessarily. I imagine the spray I use has heavier atoms than the poo atoms. (Keeping in mind, an atom's weight depends on the number of protons and neutrons in its center, called the nucleus. More particles mean a heavier atom). When the spray atoms are released into the atmosphere of the loo, they attach themselves to the poo atoms and pull them down into a lower orbit which thankfully is much lower than the nostrils.
When the toilet is flushed the turbulent spiraling vortex created drag the heavier poo/spray atoms down into the toilet, to be flushed away with all the poo droppings.
The spray atoms outnumber the poo atoms and so leave a pleasant and pleasing totally shitless smell lingering behind.

This to be filed, in its entirety, under 'Pseudo-scientific Bullshit' 🙄

MyGutsyRubyCat · 13/09/2026 08:45

I’m surprised by most of the replies. I can’t think of any homes I go to, family or friends, where there ISN’T an air freshener in the loo. I’ve got asthma but have never found it a problem. I spray when I’ve washed and am ready leave.
