AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

Is there an expectation that people's toilets should have an air freshener in? Like a spray air freshener?

We always have air freshener in both our toilets in case friends or family get caught short when visiting us or even to freshen the bathroom after having a wee if necessary, so I hate it if I go to a friend/family members house and they have none.

I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?

We have a glade air freshener at work that sprays into the space where the wash handbasins are for example.

It would be less embarrassing to say “Would you mind if I use bathroom spray” than saying nothing and leaving an unholy stench. Hopefully, said friend’s bathroom has a window.. which I’m sure someone else will whine about too. 😏

It's still very obvious what you're about to do, though - nobody is going to ask about sprays if they're only expecting to have a wee, are they?

Asthma. Absolutely not will I have an air freshener in my bathroom. Have a window. Let them open it. Its a natural bodily function. You say they can use your toilet should they get caught short. Yet judge them for the fact it may smell.
Interesting.

This.
It wouldn't ever occur to me.
I'm vegan which may make a difference but honestly other than the odd occasion where I've maybe been on holiday and eaten a lot of foods I wouldn't usually, you could go in the bathroom straight after I'd been for a number 2 and not smell anything.

Do you have bowel issues and/or a rubbish diet in your family? I'd understand why you'd have air freshener if so. But to expect others to always follow suit is unrealistic.

This is true. I was vegan for over a year my poo smelled of farmyard manure

Well you are leaving the smell of shit for the next person whether you use air freshener or not, it's just whether you are also leaving the smell of artificial scent as well.

Not necessarily. I imagine the spray I use has heavier atoms than the poo atoms. (Keeping in mind, an atom's weight depends on the number of protons and neutrons in its center, called the nucleus. More particles mean a heavier atom). When the spray atoms are released into the atmosphere of the loo, they attach themselves to the poo atoms and pull them down into a lower orbit which thankfully is much lower than the nostrils.
When the toilet is flushed the turbulent spiraling vortex created drag the heavier poo/spray atoms down into the toilet, to be flushed away with all the poo droppings.
The spray atoms outnumber the poo atoms and so leave a pleasant and pleasing totally shitless smell lingering behind.

Air fresheners are revolting. They don't disguise or cover up poo smells they just mingle with it and smell even more vile.

They're such a 70s throwback that I can't believe anyone still uses them

xGoGox · 12/09/2026 20:52

Tell me you shop in places like Poundland without telling me🙄

things to try to mask shit smells with a layer of a synethetic smell seem an odd thing to give a shit about

Absolutely correct and to be honest if you smell you should carry your own spray or not use friends toilets!

Do you really think people have such control on their bowels?

I mean if you are a once a day just after breakfast type of person, fair enough. But assuming that everyone is??

Postmenopausal · 12/09/2026 20:56

If you're that bothered, carry your own

Air fresheners literally highlight poo smells! Poopouri all the way + an open window. I’m more confused about the people without toilet brushes who expect guests to use loo paper to manually clean up after number twos??

I'm not clear on that idea either--so the guest puts their HAND in the nasty toilet water/bleach and washes the poop away? Then do they bleach their hands afterward?

superchick · 12/09/2026 21:00

Toilet smells don't really bother me. We all make smells occasionally. Keep a window open.

pollymere · 12/09/2026 21:02

I have a window next to the toilet and a bottle of perfume. If it smells that bad... Open the window or spray the perfume. Don't try and disguise it with cheap spray.

amraa · 12/09/2026 21:07

Well then carry it around if it bothers you! We’re not asthmatic but I really hate air fresheners , it’s gets in my throat and quite frankly if it’s doing that to me imagine young children! Just bc ur happy with chemicals, not everyone is. Maybe have a better diet so your 💩 doesn’t stink so bad

mymswashing · 12/09/2026 21:07

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 12/09/2026 20:13

@mymswashing you have smoke alarms in the loos???

Yep. I think every workplace I’ve worked in has

lockinsideout · 12/09/2026 21:10

Loathe air freshener so none in my house

fatlouis · 12/09/2026 21:24

lol. theres a window and a vent probably!

stymaster · 12/09/2026 21:29

Air fresheners smell worse than the shit smell they're supposed to cover.

NoFrigsLeft · 12/09/2026 21:29

I've never read such a load of sanctimonious bullshit in my life. People saying their shit doesn't stink. Smh
You are not being unreasonable. Most normal people use an air freshener and have one in the loo. At least 99% of the toilets I have ever been in.
Sorry but opening a window and a spray of the loo is the way forward.

Totaldramallama · 12/09/2026 21:30

No, I have windows. Also, the smell of air freshener does nothing except make me think you've done a massive stinking shit

TheLemonMentor · 12/09/2026 22:00

I don’t have any of this stuff as it’s toxic to people and even more to pets - cats abd dogs. I have a cat plus so you won’t find any air fresheners or plugs in my home. But there are windows in all my bathrooms.

Outtaxed · 12/09/2026 22:11

Sherrijames138 · 12/09/2026 19:15

Absolutely, no!! Sorry but everyone's poop SMELLS and being vegan is no exception to that lol.

Yes, the particular foods you consume play a role in how your poop smells but it's only one small factor. Eating "rubbish" isn't the sole determinant of odor. Digestive factors, hormones, gut bacteria, whether you consume alcohol, conditions like diabetes or celiac, tolerances and allergies to things like gluten, activity level, OTC & Rx medications.... ALL play a role.
Eating clean definitely has an impact. Being vegan doesn't automatically mean one isn't eating rubbish, either.
Common to have freshener in the bathroom.

Agree! I have vague recollection in my high school biology lessons that poo is very much supposed to smell. Not only because of the bacteria/waste products etc but so we know it’s poison/inedible (blame my biology teacher if this is wrong).

indyvoice4eva · 12/09/2026 22:26

Sorry but big no to this. It’s bad for the environment, bad for human health, and Glade in particular triggers migraines and nasty headaches. Shit smells, get over it.

EmmaJane57 · 12/09/2026 22:41

If you have done something whiffy in your friend's bathroom just open the window and discreetly say nothing and hope the smell dissipates. To be honest I think it is a first world issue and frankly, on the subject of the world, air freshener is actually contributing to poor air quality and environmental pollution.

Don't forget to flush. 😐

TubeScreamer · 12/09/2026 22:53

Dreadful things
should be banned

zigazigaaaing · 12/09/2026 23:05

I think air fresheners are tacky and gross. In our house you open the window
