AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

Is there an expectation that people's toilets should have an air freshener in? Like a spray air freshener?

We always have air freshener in both our toilets in case friends or family get caught short when visiting us or even to freshen the bathroom after having a wee if necessary, so I hate it if I go to a friend/family members house and they have none.

I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?

We have a glade air freshener at work that sprays into the space where the wash handbasins are for example.

I agree. I have mentioned this on numerous posts where people have talked about what they allow in various bathrooms in their homes.

No-one seems to take any notice. They would rather spray nasty chemicals into the atmosphere.

Bonkers!

We can’t use matches at work, it would set off the smoke alarms! There’s no window and no extractors so it’s poo pourri or Febreze. We have both. Most people use the poo pourri

Why? It actually annoys me to not see one if I'm honest.

How often do you have a pooh in someone else’s house??

BillieWiper · 12/09/2026 19:16

Not really because unless I'm sleeping at their house I doubt I'd be going for a number 2. I guess it would be handy. But if someone doesn't have it then they obviously accept the possible associated brief waft of odour.

WWomble · 12/09/2026 19:16

Yuck. Bathroom smells can be bad but so can air fresheners.

I’m allergic so wouldn’t have the,, but it had never crossed my mind to have them even before my allergies prevent it. Open a window.

WhyIsThereGlitterEverywhere · 12/09/2026 19:39

YABU, the chemicals in synthetic air fresheners are disgusting and not something I want my family breathing everyday.

TaptheCap · 12/09/2026 19:42

I absolutely cannot stand the smell of air freshener and won't have it in my house.

I'd rather smell your shit than a mix of shit and horrendous air freshener.

RowsOfFlowers · 12/09/2026 19:51

I’d rather open the window

We have a toilet at work which has no window. Outside of MN land, many people shit when they need to. Striking a match isn’t an option. No bleach is available.

So should people just leave the shit smell for the next person ?

Well you are leaving the smell of shit for the next person whether you use air freshener or not, it's just whether you are also leaving the smell of artificial scent as well.

CRCGran · 12/09/2026 20:13

I am absolutely astounded that air fresheners are so taboo to most posters!!! I wouldn't be without them in my bathrooms, and can't think of anyone I visit who doesn't have them !! I am truly baffled!!

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 12/09/2026 20:13

@mymswashing you have smoke alarms in the loos???

JJWT · 12/09/2026 20:14

You do know the air freshener just adds other molecules to the air in addition to the poo molecules? So your choice is breathing in some poo molecules or that plus some synthetic chemicals. Planning permission is not granted for a wc unless it is ventilated. My vote goes to a motorised extractor that comes on for a bit when you put the light on. Failing that open the window. Poo molecules end up outside, and you aren't breathing in any nasty chemicals. Win win.

SarzWix · 12/09/2026 20:25

YABU to expect anything in someone else's bathroom. If you, personally, require air freshener, carry your own.
But, please don't bring it to my house, I have sensory processing disorder, and strong/fake scents give me a bad headache. Just flush the toilet with the lid down, wash your hands with my lovely naturally scented soap, and open the fecking window.

Good grief! Get handle on life's realities already!

I keep Claire Burke Original Room Spray in my bathrooms. I have used this spray since the early 90's. It's much better than the smell of fruit or flower scented poo.
I think it's rude to expect guests to share their poo smells with the host.
My husband thinks his 'shit don't stink' and has to be reminded to use the spray.

SharonBe · 12/09/2026 20:28

Air fresheners stink! Open a window.

Sorry OP, you won't find fake smells in my house or my car, they give me a headache. Fresh air is best for removing smells.

Buniblu · 12/09/2026 20:28

Always got Nag champa joss sticks burning! Problem solved!

Yanbu tbh

Theres this tiktokker who i love and think is amazing, but she refuses to have a toilet brush! I'm like, what if someone (usually a man) has no choice but to poop in your toilet and finds he cant clean it?! 😩😩😩

Bleach? Someone I clean for doesn't have a loo brush either, I squirt the bleach round the inside of the rim, leave it while I do everything else, toilet is clean enough to flush it away at the end. No nasty brush required.

Living in a household with 2 boy types and 2 girl types I can tell you that our shit all stinks the same. Shock, horror: we have lavatory brushes. Getting the non adult boy / girl types to use them is a whole other conversation 🫣. ...."Usually men"??? ... get a grip.... I've never met you but I guarantee your shit stinks too.

Luckylu123 · 12/09/2026 20:33

We don’t have air freshener because they smell awful. And then the awful air freshener smell leaks out of the whole house, whereas a stinky poo smell usually just stays in the bathroom.
yabu to expect people to have revolting smelling air freshener sprays in their house just for you

Don’t get your britches in a wad, Babbling Biddy. She can easily ask her friend if the friend minds freshener spray in the bathroom. 🙄

Wouldn't that be a rather awkward conversation, though? Surely the reason why people use 'air freshener' in the first place is because they're a bit coy and embarrassed about having left a jobbie whiff?

"I'm about to use your toilet for a code brown, and it's going to be a bad one that will very probably leave an unholy stench in its wake... are you OK about me using this air freshener that I brought with me in readiness?"

Nope, not embarrassing at all...!

BeAzureRaven · 12/09/2026 20:35

I have never had air fresheners in the toilet because I don't like the idea of inhaling toxic chemicals. You can buy a product called 'Poo Pourri' to carry in your purse in case you find yourself 'having an emergency' and what it does is put a layer of oil on the toilet water (you spray it down toward the water before you go) and it traps the odor beneath the oil, you flush after you're finished, and there's no odor (or much less anyway). Or you can just carry a box of matches in your purse and strike one after you've done your business. That works pretty well also.

It would be less embarrassing to say “Would you mind if I use bathroom spray” than saying nothing and leaving an unholy stench. Hopefully, said friend’s bathroom has a window.. which I’m sure someone else will whine about too. 😏

Acheyelbows · 12/09/2026 20:39

Air fresheners are more damaging than the smell of your waste. Flush and open a window.

Plug ins and perfumed sprays are poisoning the environment and your own family.

viques · 12/09/2026 20:42

Isn’t that what windows are for?

FeralFucker · 12/09/2026 18:38

Wonder how all those medieval types coped with their poop pongs. Bet they weren't demanding air freshener.

I suppose, with the reality of getting the stuff full in the face if you walked past the wrong place at the wrong time and didn't hear the warning, the pong was probably the least of your worries!
