AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

Is there an expectation that people's toilets should have an air freshener in? Like a spray air freshener?

We always have air freshener in both our toilets in case friends or family get caught short when visiting us or even to freshen the bathroom after having a wee if necessary, so I hate it if I go to a friend/family members house and they have none.

I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?

We have a glade air freshener at work that sprays into the space where the wash handbasins are for example.

I'm an enthusiastic meat eater and am wondering the same. I have never had any problems with smell unless ill. OP, maybe work on your gut microbiome?

Are you saying your shit doesn’t smell of anything?

People saying theirs doesn’t because they are veggie - I spent a weekend with a group of vegans and I can attest to the fact their shit was toxic!

We don't even have a dishwasher, and we do all our washing up by hand - which would doubtless leave your typical MN open-mouthed in horror at the very idea that somebody in the developed world could survive this way!!

Nor me 😬 And we keep our shoes on in the house 🤣

Grumpyoldcat · 12/09/2026 08:29

Perhaps some people dont like spraying or using yucky chemicals around.

Is there a reason why your employer hasn't complied with building regulation requirements? It does seem odd particularly if in a modern in a work place facility used by multiple people that some kind of mechanical ventilation isn't installed to change the air.

No idea - it’s a listed building so that might be it. Or it might be that there was one and it stopped working so it was taken out. It’s not something anyone gets het up about tbh.

Chocolattecoffeecuppa · 12/09/2026 08:34

We don't have air freshener in our toilet.

I use Purdy & Figg drops to make the bathroom smell nice daily but I don't keep them in the bathroom

we also don't have a toilet brush!

trailing remnants of dog shit around my house? Not for me. But you do you

@Thatsalineallright

your shit will still stink. Especially as an ‘enthusiastic meat eater’

isitfridayyetttt · 12/09/2026 10:57

I always thought many Mumnsnetters walked around like their shit don’t stink. This thread confirms it.

why do you have to walk in dog shit? Even my kids knew not to do that before they even started primary school

UnNiddeRides · 12/09/2026 01:47

I'm not sure which is worse for the environment. A spray or putting bleach down the toilet. In terms of smell they’re both quite unpleasant.
On a tangent, ‘poop’ really annoys me. Not a word I’ve ever used & when my kids were young it wasn’t a word we’d have used then.

You would have hated Mr Toad Grin

@ThePurpleShark

its everywhere on the pavements. You might not walk in it but plenty of people do meaning there are traces of it all over.

BrezhnevsLuxuriantEyebrows · 12/09/2026 11:15

she broke up with a very lovely man the first time she went to his house because he had an air freshener in his bathroom

I presume she's pointedly never dated any taxi drivers, with their obligatory 'magic tree' hanging over the rear view mirror just next to the furry dice, then...?!

Do you mean you keep them on when visiting others, or if you're popping home quickly to pick something up; or do you actively wear them in the house all the time?

My DF used to wear shoes all the time when at home, even when he hadn't been out and wasn't going out anywhere - I always found that really odd (DM, DSis and I never did that). Maybe the home he grew up in had carpets that were even more minging than the pavement outside?!

I don't put my shoes on furniture or lick the floor, so am good anyway 😂

I am yet to find a study showing that people who keep their shoes indoors are more likely to suffer from Toxoplasmosis or the black plague, or that kids have a higher absence rate at school

I don't care if people keep or take off their shoes at home, I just find the outrage amusing.

Lizchapman · 12/09/2026 18:04

Why on earth should I buy an air freshener just in case a visitor is offended because I don’t have one? 😂😂😂😂

BeAquaTiger · 12/09/2026 18:08

Only men shit?
You think women only shit at home?
Even more bizarre you think men would clean a toilet! I can barely get the men in my house to flush

BeAquaTiger · 12/09/2026 18:11

Would not want to use a toilet if there is no air freshener? You have a choice? When I need to go I have to go

I understand your actions but personally hate the smell of commercial air fresheners. We leave a spray deodorant and modest spray fragrance in each bathroom which can be used for their intended purpose as well as to spray the bathroom to cover any major smells. I also try to make sure the windows are easily opened in case any guests want to clear the air!

CocksBolingey · 12/09/2026 18:22

I think it’s quite normal. I always have one in my bathroom.

Just have your big smelly shit before you leave home.

You can time your poos for when you leave? 😵‍💫😵‍💫

ChampagneLassie · 12/09/2026 18:25

i hate areal sprays I think they’re way more nauseating than the smell of poo. I’ve got a friend who is very sensitive to chemical compounds like this and can’t go near them such that it really made me think about what I put in my home.

Vse500 · 12/09/2026 18:28

HangryBrickShark · 09/09/2026 23:17

Why? It actually annoys me to not see one if I'm honest.

My house, my choice, my rules. If it angers you that much don’t visit other people.

havingoneofthosedays · 12/09/2026 18:29

Only on MN ‘my shit doesn’t smell’
Love this batshittery
