AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

Is there an expectation that people's toilets should have an air freshener in? Like a spray air freshener?

We always have air freshener in both our toilets in case friends or family get caught short when visiting us or even to freshen the bathroom after having a wee if necessary, so I hate it if I go to a friend/family members house and they have none.

I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?

We have a glade air freshener at work that sprays into the space where the wash handbasins are for example.

Wipes are flushable the way a watch or necklace is flushable. It will vanish round the bend but will not dissolve.

Exactly - a huge blockage in the sewer is exactly what the environment needs.

You can’t smell your own shit. It’s a thing.

It really does depend on what you eat or drink. Entirely breast fed babies' poo is odourless, then as foods are added the smells begin, and if you pay attention you will find the odour alters with what they eat. I was amazed to know a person who didn't stink the place out but they walk among us, they really do. I wish there were more of them.

suburburban · 11/09/2026 16:13

We use old perfume or aftershave as air freshener in the bathroom but always open the window

I am really hoping that this is a take on the great quote often attributed to Churchill 😆

Put the extractor fan on. Ventilation is a requirement under building regs so all windowless bathrooms should have one.

Some extractor fans are realy loud, too loud for talking to be heard, So you sit there, waiting for it to stop . . . Not a lot of fun.

Pedant61 · 11/09/2026 17:18

Air fresheners of any type are vile, and smell far worse than the natural aromas they are intended to disguise. I never buy them, and I won't buy them.
A window can be opened, if necessary.

Not if there isn’t one…

And given the way most MNers react to the smell of anything, I’m surprised that they would rather have the smell of shit in their home

I could smell both of my children’s poos when they were breastfed but I have a very keen sense of smell. It smells a bit oaty. YMMV. It really does depend on the person as my husband could never smell it even when I could. Where I work currently I have been told my sense of smell is amazing (unfortunately for me!). I’m also one of them super taster people if it’s at all linked. 🤷🏼‍♀️

My bil is a vegan and he’s still a dirty arsed cunt (albeit slightly less of one since he became one). I’ve been veggie for over 30 years and mine still have a smell. Unless it’s a ghost poo it’s gonna have a whiff about it whether you can smell it yourself or not.

That actually seems a shame, in all honesty. I always assuned that the reason poo smells is so that parents receive a clear prompt as to when the next major nappy change is required... but sadly, it just keeps right on a-stinking for the next however many decades until we die!

If there's anybody whose poo there is an actual benefit to copping a big whiff of, it's a baby!

Does everyone on MN have multiple bathrooms? I have never met anyone with more than one bathroom.

4 bed house. Family bathroom and shower en-suite upstairs. Loo and sink downstairs. So 3 toilets in total.
Pretty average where I am. (Mostly built in the last 20 years).

UnNiddeRides · 12/09/2026 01:47

I'm not sure which is worse for the environment. A spray or putting bleach down the toilet. In terms of smell they’re both quite unpleasant.
On a tangent, ‘poop’ really annoys me. Not a word I’ve ever used & when my kids were young it wasn’t a word we’d have used then.

I know it is hard to understand but I dont like toilet smells either i just would rather not have them covered up by revoltong air fresheners

I cant beleive this surprises people

Stopsnowing · 12/09/2026 05:44

carry your own? Striking a match works!

ConstantlyFuriosa · 12/09/2026 06:58

isitfridayyetttt · 11/09/2026 11:14

If everyone lit a match after they took a dump surely that wouldn’t be great for the environment either. Even if on a lower level

I’m a huge advocate for change regarding the environment but lighting a match takes seconds; the smell of the match obliterates the stink of shit and the match smell/‘fumes’ go in seconds too. Surely much better for the environment than pointless chemicals?

And btw, I detest the smell of log burners/fire pits et al. Lighting a match is fast and effective.

Only about a quarter of UK homes have more than one bathroom.
The norm is therefore still one.

Thatsalineallright · 12/09/2026 07:02

aterriblemiddleclassfanny · 09/09/2026 23:17

This.
It wouldn't ever occur to me.
I'm vegan which may make a difference but honestly other than the odd occasion where I've maybe been on holiday and eaten a lot of foods I wouldn't usually, you could go in the bathroom straight after I'd been for a number 2 and not smell anything.

Do you have bowel issues and/or a rubbish diet in your family? I'd understand why you'd have air freshener if so. But to expect others to always follow suit is unrealistic.

I'm an enthusiastic meat eater and am wondering the same. I have never had any problems with smell unless ill. OP, maybe work on your gut microbiome?

My kitchen is next door to the bathroom/toilet. This is not an unknown phenomenon.

Drink more water if your urine smells that bad

In the same, the scent just mixes in with the poo smell

Yabbadabbadooooooo · 12/09/2026 07:15

It’s a class thing. The working class have air fresheners and take their shoes off inside. The upper middle class look down on air freshener and shoes-off houses. Bit of a generalisation but it’s a bit Hyacinth Bucket to have an airwick and think it’s posh! I have a well to do friend who grew up in a stately home, and she broke up with a very lovely man the first time she went to his house because he had an air freshener in his bathroom. That was the only reason. It always stuck in my mind as a crazy reason to break up with a lovely man, especially as she really liked him, but it was so ingrained in her psyche that air fresheners are just naff, she couldn’t get over it! Crazy example, but shows the class divide.

Autumnallaround · 12/09/2026 07:40

@Yabbadabbadooooooo i agree with this. I remember being told air freshener was common.

I am pretty sure Ricky Tomlinson uses it liberally after a big poo in The Royal Family.

totalnamechanger · 12/09/2026 07:52

I don’t think anyone actually believes having an air wick is posh.

I am working class and I roll my eyes at shoes off households!
