AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

Is there an expectation that people's toilets should have an air freshener in? Like a spray air freshener?

We always have air freshener in both our toilets in case friends or family get caught short when visiting us or even to freshen the bathroom after having a wee if necessary, so I hate it if I go to a friend/family members house and they have none.

I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?

We have a glade air freshener at work that sprays into the space where the wash handbasins are for example.

We have a spray air freshener in the toilet at work - its horrible though and basically signals when someone (who uses it) has had a poo because the sickly scent wafts down the corridor.
I prefer the open a window approach - I don't have an air freshener at home and haven't really given much thought to guests (or residents) toilet smells.

To be fair, the smell of shit tends to signal that as well. Great if you have a window to open but many workplaces don’t.

If everyone lit a match after they took a dump surely that wouldn’t be great for the environment either. Even if on a lower level

Not my experience at all and I know lots of working class people (in fact I am one).

In fact this will blow your mind - a lot of people don’t have a utility room or even a garage.

We have a decent house, worth a reasonable amount of money and yet we don’t have room for a toilet. The garage is used for, well, storing the car and other things.

But of course MN only know people with at least two bathrooms and room for a pony à la Hyacinth Bucket and it’s inconceivable that even working class people won’t have the same. 🤣

No I am ‘sneering’ at the faux shock that some people don’t understand that not everyone has the same. I wasn’t aware you were the same poster with the main home who grew up with an outside toilet.

The implication is that it can’t be the case that my experience is as legitimate as yours. Your experience is that most people have two bathrooms now and mine is that most people don’t.

Both perfectly reasonable and valid.

But they don't actually work - they just add the (fake) smell of Spring Meadow to the smell of honking turd!

Lentilcakes · 11/09/2026 12:06

No I don’t.

SillyPiccalilli · 11/09/2026 12:33

Personally I don't like air fresheners, they're synthetic, exist to mask smells not remove them. I'd prefer just a clean house, and an open window if needed than fresheners, candles and diffusers everywhere. I therefore am not wasting my money buying air fresheners on the off chance that a guest, who doesn't live here, might want to use it.

Mainly posting though in response to all those saying they'd rather have a toilet brush to clean up...this horrifies me. To me the toilet brush is for general cleaning, not for scraping up your skid marks - the water will literally wash them away, just leave it. I would find it absolutely grim if I found my toilet brush caked in a guests shit next time I came to clean my bathroom.

Not going to RTFT so apologies if this is a repeat...

Top tip is to flush the loo after pooping, before wiping/getting up. Most of the smell will have gone. Flush again to get rid of loo paper.

Obviously I only do this when using public loos, or in others' houses, before people have a go at me for wasting water...

As long as you don’t pretend to object to the air freshener on the basis of the environment 🤷‍♀️

Yanbu tbh

Theres this tiktokker who i love and think is amazing, but she refuses to have a toilet brush! I'm like, what if someone (usually a man) has no choice but to poop in your toilet and finds he cant clean it?! 😩😩😩

Toilet paper and bleach works well.

TheThirteenthFairy · 11/09/2026 14:31

Air fresheners do not 'freshen' the air. Use one and you'll still be smelling shit ~ plus a sickly, cloying artificial 'fragrance'. You're doomed, folks.

It may be that stuff that does a film on the surface of the water? Something like that. No idea if works tho!

It works very well indeed!

That's what it is. I do think it makes a difference, although wouldn't say it eliminates niffs.

We're on holiday at the moment and stopping in a large caravan with two loos, and not having anyone visit. But we have an air freshener in each toilet that we brought from home. I hate toilet smells.

For those that say their shit doesn't smell, are you serious??? Of course it does! 😅

Edited

I can assure you that shit doesn't always smell ~ or doesn't smell much. I've noticed that those who eat red meat are very whiffy; and people whose diet includes a lot of processed meat, or drink spirits. A diet heavy in fast food will produce strong smelling poops. Also some illnesses, like food poisoning, produce identifiable odours.

But if you flush whilst you're still sitting down, you experience the 'Poseidon's Kiss' effect!

Whaaaatszuuup · 11/09/2026 14:54

I can’t remember the last time I even saw an air freshener. I don’t know anybody who has them.

BewareOfTheFakes · 11/09/2026 15:10

Sickly sweet flowery shit smells worse than just shit.

Our bathroom window is permanently open until the deep depths of winter. At which point a splash of bleach round the loo afterwards does the job of neutralising the smell.

FairLemonNewt · 11/09/2026 15:48

Yuk. Air fresheners are revolting, and make a bathroom that smells of poo just smell like poo with air freshener. I've never seen one in anyone's bathroom.

You might be allergic if they give you headaches. I'm allergic to some fragrances (and all aerosols), and one of the symptoms is migraines. We do use some fragranced things because I know what I will react to and what I won't. Floral scents affect me more than things like linen, cotton, or vanilla. I can't be around any of those plug-in things, but some reed diffusers, candles, and some Zoflora fragrances are fine.

To the person who sprays poo pouri, I'd be really pissed off if you did that in my house. If you need to shit in my loo fine, it's natural, we all do it, but please refrain from trying to kill me in my own home. And some fragrances are really bad for pets. I'd much rather smell your shit than have you poison my cat.

You don't spray it into the air, silly ~ it's no good there!. You hold it close to the water and spray.

Agree with @NibliaBiblia even said
“ flushable” wipes, are not. Be prepared to call DynoRod, in the future, if you keep chucking wipes down your loo!

Wipes are flushable the way a watch or necklace is flushable. It will vanish round the bend but will not dissolve.
