AIBU to tell him I have booked the ballet weekend alone?

I am in my 50s. I am dating a man who is a bit hopeless.but we go to events together, like ballet and the opera

I said to him a few weeks ago that I had tickets for a ballet this weekend if he wanted to come. He did not reply. It is also my birthday next week and he said he was not able to think of something to do this weekend as he had too much else to think about - this really related to a weekend in Rome for him and his daughter that I had paid for but he was stressed about: he’s been now and had a ball but not mentioned next weekend since he’s been back this week.

I obviously have the tickets, and have booked a hotel room for myself as well as a nice meal.
He has not yet asked about the weekend and what I am doing, but would I be unreasonable to tell him that he had his chance and I have booked a night just for me?

so, an update. On the day of the ballet he messaged to say he’d come over and cook for me. I said, oh no I’m off out as you knew. He didn’t think I’d still go.

Anyway, I went myself, had a fabulous time. Lovely solo dinner beforehand and enjoyed the performance very much

I’ve been having a really difficult time with other stuff (unrelated but stressful and time consuming!) but have taken a step back and know what to do

Good for you! What an ego he has.

He certainly does not lack ego!

He was not happy, but doesn’t say that, just doesn’t ask about it. I think more about the restaurant than the ballet

Mine's also hopeless, but we have a giggle & I operate on a "matched effort" basis so I invest very little in the relationship. It works just fine for us. Disproportionate effort is what causes resentment, & it's not possible to continue a relationship when that creeps in.

This might work! I have taken a massive step back. Planning my own stuff to do.

Really pleased you went, and had a fab time!

Can’t believe he thought you wouldn’t go. Apart from anything, tickets aren’t cheap. He could have met you halfway, and met you for the meal beforehand, but it was all about him controlling the narrative.

cheveuxblanc · 27/09/2026 10:34

The tickets were cheap, tbf and I didn’t tell him about the meal until after I’d been 😂

So pleased that you went and enjoyed yourself OP. I'm also rather pleased that you cut him down to size by refusing his last minute offer of a home made meal, in favour of sticking to your plans. I bet he was majorly pissed off at that, lol.

AshCullen1894 · 27/09/2026 11:03

Nice work OP 👍

ecuse · 27/09/2026 11:08

Excellent outcome. Go you, and I'm so pleased you enjoyed your birthday 💪

Shinyandnew1 · 27/09/2026 11:13

You buy him a weekend in Rome and he can’t be bothered to even text to make plans for your birthday?

Don’t date a man who is hopeless. Set your sights much higher.

Hopefulsalmon · 27/09/2026 12:04

Great update op - glad you enjoyed yourself

Rachelshair · 27/09/2026 15:05

He just expected you to not go because he wasn't? What a plonker. And peeved because you didn't take him out for dinner, what a cf. I'm sure you can find someone more on your level, he's not really enough is he.
