AIBU to think many people of the UK lack confidence in the current government?

CoventryCity · Today 10:45

AIBU to think that the majority of people in the UK don't have any confidence in the current government, with an unelected Prime Minister at its' helm?

Would people be willing to vote on a petition to have a parliamentary debate on this matter, to encourage this government to have a snap General Election? This would give the people - the tax payers - as say in who is running the country. Democracy in action, if you will.

AIBU - people are happy with Labour and the unelected PM

YANBU - people have a democratic right to vote for who they want to run the country and right now, the majority don't have confidence in the current government.

this is always the case. Not sure what you’re on about. The population never 100% support one party

You're doing a lot of stirring today 😂

Yawn.

Who mentioned that they do? 100% is a rare thing in politics, obviously.

Anyone with confidence in any UK government is spectacularly naive.

The only difference is that we have less money with Labour and fewer public services with Conservatives.

AdeleRochester · Today 10:53

He is not “unelected”. The electorate don’t vote for a Prime Minister the party in power does.

I don’t think the party behaved that well pushing out Keir Starmer but they didn’t break any rules.

Elections are extremely expensive, I can think of far better ways for the government to use that money.

Apart from anything else it’s a dreadful approach to just chuck out any PM who doesn't wave a magic wand and change things overnight.

Change takes time. We aren’t children to be demanding instant gratification. There’s a reason governments get a set minimum term to try to fulfil their manifesto.

No. Many people (usually ones who don't work) have more money with Labour. Tax payers have a lot less. Labour are the party of non working people - and the party who suppress sex crime statistics on asylum seekers and immigrants.

I was trying to be neutral 🤣 You are right of course.

CoventryCity · Today 10:57

Why is Labour - who are supposed to look after their electorate - covering up sex crime statistics?

The migrant crime cover up
Why is Labour fighting to keep migrant crime statistics secret?

The Labour government has taken the egregious step of launching a legal bid to prevent the publication of migrant crime statistics.
Following a ruling by the Information Commissioner’s Office that the Ministry of Justice had “not demonstrated” any justifiable reason for withholding 2018 to 2024 data on convictions by nationality, the first instinct of former Justice Secretary, David Lammy was to go running to the courts.

I lack confidence in the UK population and media. The triple lock must be scrapped. It’s madness. Do we trust pensioners - many of which are pretty selfish and don’t understand the wider economic context- and the daily mail not to whip people up into thinking they’re being robbed? No we don’t. So the policy won’t go through and people’s lives will keep getting worse.

Could you be more offensive to older people? Ageist hate speech.

Why is Burnham so fixated on the north to the exclusion of the rest of the country? To the extent that he’s happy to spend money with his ridiculous No 10 North.

I don’t trust people who don’t understand that the pensioners have often worked all their lives, and often in jobs requiring intelligence and critical thinking.

As for selfish, you can say that about anyone. You could argue that people having children when they can’t afford it in the knowledge that someone will foot the bill are selfish. You could argue that anyone not a net tax payer is selfish. You could argue that anyone costing the country anything is selfish.

Maybe because the south east gets most of the investment and he wants to change that.

ScholesPanda · Today 11:07

Clearly you hate labour and don't think they should govern, you'd probably feel the same if they won your snap election.

The electorate are more divided than ever, any party winning an election is unlikely to get more than 30-35% of the vote, maybe closer to 25% according to the polls, none of them are likely to get a ringing endorsement. So a large majority of the electorate will not have their 'choice'.

Constantly re-running elections and changing horses mid stream is likely to cause instability; will mean we fall even further behind in tackling the long term issues facing the country; and in the short run will spook the bond markets and embolden our enemies abroad. So not a good idea IMO.

Hate speech? Sigh. The triple lock is madness. That’s not controversial. Speak to any economist. Many pensioners - whether or not they need the cash - seem to think they have a god given right to it, while not realising that:

  1. pensioners in the UK have more disposable income than any other demographic. 2)those currently paying for the triple lock won’t get pensions anywhere near as generous.
  2. its an economic fact that the triple lock - if not removed - will eventually hand the entire UK spend directly to pensioners, ie no money for anything else whatsoever.
  3. the UK government can still increase pensions on an annual basis as they see fit without the triple lock. They just get to keep the rise to a sensible, fair rate rather than being forced to keep increasing it.
  4. no one in receipt of the state pension paid in anywhere near enough for the amount they are getting out.
  5. Pensions are a benefit, just like any other benefit.

So no hate speech here, just bare economic facts.

MaeshoweDragon · Today 11:09

No one has full confidence in any government, of any persuasion, any time.

I just got myself within spitting distance of my state pension and the "next big thing" seems to be attack the triple lock. We make plans based on circumstances, they will have to change (with no time to change them) if the pension is not future proofed. Imagine rent going up every year, power, water, council tax and pensions not.

Andy Burnham himself still gives city mayor vibes, not country leader vibes. But he needs to be given some time, labour need to be given some time, they'll just about get past spouting "we inherited blah, blah, from the last Tory government" before the next election is due anyhow at least.

VividZebra · Today 11:11

You're not only being unreasonable, you're following the right-wing play-script of the Tommy Robinson brigade. This is an entirely legitimate government, doing extremely well in my view.

Rather shitty to assume an entire age group doesn’t understand the economy

maudelovesharold · Today 11:12

Many people in the UK will lack confidence in the government of the day, whatever the party, whoever the PM, and however he or she got there. That’s just the way it is and always has been. A snap GE won’t wave a magic wand.

Can we leave it out with the party political broadcasting? You've made your deeply unpleasant political leanings very clear. You can't browbeat people into agreeing with you.

I would agree but on Monday I went to my local towns regeneration launch. It gave me hope for the first time in years.

We live in a very labour stronghold that saw its first conservative Mp in my lifetime post Brexit election that was soon returned to labour at the last election.

Strangely at this meeting things felt different it didn’t feel left or right. They are trying Co operative style and it felt centred and like responsible capitalism. We live in a town where revolution begins. I hope it’s the beginning of a new working class movement where I feel I belong.

Was genuinely feeling quite teary and if you read my posts that is not me .
