Rise of far right

Sillyme1 · Today 07:00

Any one else worried about the rise of the far right in Europe. Churchill once said ‘those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it’. Obviously social conditions are different from the 1930s, but there are similarities such as using immigrants as scapegoats (not Jews this time). Things can so easily escalate and I admit to being worried

The Jews were demonised then. Now it's muslims and immigrants.

There are worries and is a serious conversation to be had about illegal immigration but the solution is most definitely not to turn to the far right. Haven’t we learnt anything from history?

Where in history is the precedent for converting a mostly homogeneous country into a globalised population in one generation?

Knowing enough about the rise of the AfD, I can tell you it does not come from a place of concern for kids. It's about hiding away those who need more support. Their roots are so deep in Nazism that even the RN in France (whose founder had controversial ties with former Nazis back in the day) refuses to sit with them in the European Parliament (there are questions around how much of that distance is just for show, but still... the AfD is that toxic)

Yes it's about segregation, not meeting their needs. It will be sold as meeting their needs. But it will be underfunded sen schools where children are babysat and left to draw and play.

I travel alot in Central and Eastern Europe and using the term 'far right' for the policies of the parties currently being elected is an insult to those that died and suffered under truely 'far right' regimes. The continually use of the term for Conservative policies devalues the term. If you think Reform is 'far right' you need to go and stand on the edge of the Danube in Budapest where the shoes of women and children are created as art to remember those thrown in to drown because of their family political support, or go to Lithuanian villages that all, with little exception, have mass graves on their outskirts. Or maybe the mobile gas chambers in Solvenia and Slovakia to remove political opponents.
Closing down the genuine debate about issues around immigration and sustainability of communities and distribution of resources in society, by labeling everyone as a common enemy and extreme is exactly what creates the situations where extreme agendas can develop. But the left never see this because they believe their ideology is the only ideology that should be tolerated. Every report of centre right wing views is now started with 'the far right'. It's an attempt to embedded the idea that not conferring with the liberal left wing ideology is a threat to society. It's working too. Labelling reform as 'far right' and even facist is now completely mainstream.
It's not a 'far right' those turning in their watery grave in the Danube would recognise, that's for sure.

If you are British and middle aged, your references for centrist political parties would not be, 'Reform'.

People, humans need to stop sleep walking into becoming merely data sets before it's too late and algorithms have completely eroded democracy. The erosion of democracy definitely equates to any definition of the extreme right!

malificent7 · Today 10:34

Well we aren't going to learn from history eg. WW2. Sadly I have cocluded that humans are tribal territorial like animals and will defend themselves from "other." Unfortunately I don't think we are dedigned to live in harmony.
Our failure to learn from the past will be our demise and Darwinism in action. Gosh i'm cheerful aren't I?

You are not worried about how rigid and authoritarian the left have become?
I was a union rep, paid up Labour member and I have never felt so let down
It never fails to surprise me how communism managed to kill so many yet is not feared in the same way as fascism is
I see no difference

I think ppl are wise to the evils of communism

Firstly, people need to stop describing people who have concerns about immigration as ‘far right’. They’re really not. Hitler was far right, so it’s silly to be shrieking ‘far right’ at everyone who has concerns. We don’t want, nor do we need, immigration of unskilled young single men, who are not going to fill NHS roles, or contribute anything to our society, other than creating problems with demand on our public services, to which most of them won’t be paying into. If the government listen to the masses on this subject, there would be no place for Reform. But Burnham is just dismissing concerns, as he has stated publicly that immigration is not a priority. Apparently his priorities are giving everyone free bus travel and saving us all £4 a month on our utility bills. He thinks the hundreds demonstrating this week is irrelevant - low numbers. But he doesn’t seem to realise that there are millions of us not demonstrating on the streets, who agree with the protestors sentiment on immigration, and who will be voting instead at the next GE for a Reform government. Thats the reality unless he starts doing something about it, and not taking us for fools by fiddling figures.

We have had thousands of undocumented men breaking into this country every day. They come from cultures where women get stoned, and where rape isn't a crime. The Government have not stopped this from happening, in fact they have given these men accommodation and money, and leaflets saying that if they rape they "may" not get to stay.

OF COURSE eventually the young men of this country will take matters into their own hands. That doesn't make them far right - they have little choice now as the Government aren't handling it.

I predicted this years ago.

Anyone who didn't see this coming, has been living under a rock.

I will be voting Reform.

Do you honestly think that women in this country want to be raped?

Do you honestly think that as women, if we thought these men were there to protect us, we wouldn’t be cheering them on?

Why do you think so many women are against these men if they’re suggesting they’re protecting us?

We are women.
We have mothers, sisters, daughters, friends - all of whom are women/girls.
We want to protect ourselves and other women.
These men do not want to protect us.

And they are far right because that’s exactly what they call themselves.

Democracy also includes us being able to vote in our PM. Yet we’ve been lumbered with Burnham due to his lefty mates taking the opportunity to get someone in who would never have got in if it was down to the voting public.

This is news to me, when did immigration halve?

I don't think they understand that immigration is cumulative and has a permanent effect on changing the population.

Treating a native population like this is inhumane.

Key Statistics on Foreign-Born Parents

  • Mothers born abroad: In recent annual data releases by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), non-UK-born mothers accounted for roughly 33.9% to over 34% of all live births. 1, 2]
  • At least one foreign-born parent: The proportion of newborns with either one or both parents born outside the UK reached a record high of 40.2%. 1]
  • Top countries of origin: The most common countries of birth for non-UK-born mothers include India, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Romania. 1]
  • Regional variation: Concentrations are highest in urban centers like London, where nearly two-thirds or more of births involve at least one foreign-born parent, compared to much lower rates in parts of Wales and Northern England.

It absolutely is true.

Political labels aren’t fixed points in time because the political centre moves. Positions that were mainstream 20, 30 or 50 years ago are considered far right today.

That doesn’t mean the exact same people or movements were “far right” then; it means the Overton window has shifted.

You can disagree about where the line should be drawn if you really want, but pretending the political centre never moves historically just isn’t accurate.

This is interesting. I'd understood the opposite. For example, that Conservatives used to be fine with nationalised industries etc until Thatcher. And the typical Conservative MP seems to be far more right wing than 10/20 years ago. But perhaps in other ways things have swung in the other direction. Do you have any examples?

These people call themselves far right…

They are by definition far right.

I am concerned about too much immigration, like every country should be - but I am a leftist.

There is a big difference between being concerned about immigration vs being far right.

If 'far right' means not wanting boat loads of undocumented men from cultures that are usually misogynistic and hostile (a pamphlet telling them rape is 'not the done thing' in the UK, ffs.) then I guess I'm far right.

Frankly, I've had enough of my fellow women with their suicidal empathy.

'Suicidal Empathy' is a term used to express a misplaced empathy for others outside that group that destroys the group that person is in as the 'others' take advantage of the kindness to the group's detriment.

This is describing perfectly the mother of one of my son’s school mates. She works for a refugee charity and twists herself in knots trying to help and justify the undocumented men sat around our town. Meanwhile she seems to be able to ignore and neglect her own two teenage sons without a second thought, they’ve in trouble with the police, getting so drunk they need their stomach pumped, stealing vodka bottles etc from the supermarket, hanging out with older troublemakers. They were once lovely kids, academically bright although I’d suspect some ND. She’s just completely abandoned them to concentrate on the foreign men from the charity she works for… I can’t begin to understand her thinking.

What is its composition?

ZombieZebra · Today 10:41

YABU. The left has swung so far left that even if you haven’t moved position (from the right), then suddenly you’re ’far right’. Our position hasn’t altered over the last 5 years yet DH and I have been labelled racists and bigots by two ex-friends. All we want is documented immigrants who pay their way rather than undocumented people flooding our country. We will also never be bullied into believing that people can change sex.

The population has changed a lot over the last forty to fifty years. And many British people have immigrated. I personally know people living in the US, Australia, Thailand, Iceland and Germany. All British people. We are all much more mobile now.

It is a consequence of what has been happening in European countries, illegal migrants who despise western culture invited in and protected by "Governments" Hmm at the expense of citizens. Quite chilling but inevitable. Let the cards fall where they may, we are in for interesting times.

@NotAnotherScarf ,

I agree 100% with your last post.

I think that this is what ‘woke’ is shorthand for. It is the forming of a consensus about issues that a fair percentage of the population disagree with and refusing to even discuss them.

Things like EDI (I know it has a different name in the UK), the trans debate which affects all women and, of course, immigration. If anyone questions them they are labelled as bigoted or thick, or probably both.

It is the ‘extremist’ parties that questioned the woke agenda and brought it back into the mainstream. On the whole, their job is done as most parties are now at least speaking about the above issues. But now that their key issues are no longer USPs they are leveraging up their support and moving on to issues where there is a genuine consensus among decent people (such as not being racist).

Unfortunately they have momentum now, and will be hard to stop.

I genuinely don’t see how people object to Equity, Diversity and Inclusiveness. A lot of time people object to a false understanding of what it is (giving unqualified people jobs based on an immutable trait) when in most places like my own company it’s essentially respecting all viewpoints and working to remove any barriers that maybe a barriers to any groups.
