To be annoyed nobody mentioned who started the war

Recently on YouTube the Oxford Union Channel released a debate titled this house believes Israel never really wanted peace. I'm not going to go through the arguments back and forth as anyone can watch it, however what's really annoyed me is that's not a single debater, including on the Israel side, mentioned who actually started the war.

There was a lot of talk whether Israel did truly ever want peace or not, but nobody actually spoke of the fact that Israel never started any wars. It was the Arabs and Palestinians who started first the Civil War in 1947, then Israel's war of independence in 1948. I would think the onus for peace is on the party who actually started all the wars.

It's such a weird debate to pull up Israel for 'never truly wanting peace' while completely ignoring the role of the other side who actually started all the wars.

Yep they started a Jihadist war then called genocide when the Israelis retaliated.

Not to mention Hamas are a terrorist organisation who are murdering thousands of Christians in Africa

Well, thousands of people were killed and displaced by having their homes stolen, so I’d say so, yes.

You should look at history a bit more closely. Have a look at what that area was called around 900 years BC.

The whole thing is crazy. During that time people lived there, all together. It's religion (as always) that split them apart and started the fights.

You can go even further back to rise of Arab nationalism and how Jews before state of Israel created, were treated very poorly, with settlements often attacked. Sone people like to pick and choose evidence, often to suit their own prejudice. Palestinians had so many chances to be independent and every single time Hamas destroyed it. Why? Hamas exist simply to destroy Israel, not “free Palestinians”. Thats what so many dont seem to understand. Im not saying Israeli government is all innocent, but what are they meant to do surrounded by people who exist only to destroy Israel? Its an endless cycle that Israel has finally said “enough!”.

You need to go back further than that to properly understand. This is a region with a looooong history.

Also, probably look at the role the British played in fucking things up then walking away, whistling innocently. As always.

Pretty sure that happened during and due to the needless war the Arabs started. It didn't have to be this way.

They also never mention the wall Egypt built and how many were displaced to build it

I agree, creating Israel without creating Palestine too was always going to create war.

It’s very hard for anyone to argue that Israel have ever wanted peace. All their actions show otherwise. They are a war mongering state.

Who did start the war in your opinion? I would say it was the British back in 1917, but I guess the history goes back further.

It doesn't sound like the complicated history of the region was the topic of the debate though? It sounds like a deliberately controversial topic was chosen that who have strong reactions both fit and against.

Palestinians and ‘Palestine’ didn’t exist when Israel was created. The land was occupied by Canaanites.

Two states were created. Jordan and Israel.

Indeed. The UN proposed a Palestinian state alongside Israel in the same 1947 resolution. The Arab states rejected that, and went to war.

So, damned either way.

If you fundamentally deny Israel’s right to exist on that land then you can justify all later violence as resistance.

But I can’t see any basis for saying Israel never wanted peace. They have again and again offered big concessions and every time it’s been rejected, mainly because it’s a theological issue that doesn’t admit of any compromise for many (on both sides, but certainly on the Arab side), and politically useful for surrounding Arab states.

The Palestinians that are there are the Caanites that became Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Atheist.

The same way the Christian white English people in the UK are not Middle Eastern just because they follow a Middle Eastern religion. They are the native white people who changed their religion.
