OMG Miriam Margolyes Andi Peters

Temptree · Yesterday 12:16

I've got an annual leave day today and am spending the morning shamelessly on the sofa watching daytime TV with cups of tea and biscuits after an exhausting school summer hols. Kids back at school today. I've given myself permission to vegetate till 3:15pm.
So here I am watching This Morning and have just spent 5 minutes with my jaw wide open and hand over my mouth at what Miriam Margolyes just said to Andi Peters.
Did anyone else see it??
I mean it takes a lot to shock me. I am not easily shocked.
And this woman is currently doing a sell out tour??
Whoah.

Where does Yellow even enter into it?!

I guess some people thought that very light-skinned black people had a yellowish tinge to their skin? Looking at Andi Peters, he doesn’t look like what most Americans would consider to be particularly light-skinned for a black person.

I'd put £100 on her trickling into early stage dementia, inappropriate-ness.

She used to be fairly switched on and funny.

She's always been like this. Fantastic to watch when she's performing but you would never want to go to the after party with her.

A typical racist slur would be deleted but I've seen plenty of racist comments not commented on by other posters and not deleted.
MM appears to have absolutely no filter. There isn't anything remotely funny about what she said.

My point was that, as you say, MM has no filter, so what she said may have been a racist slur and not repeatable on MN without deletion. As it turned out it was a racist slur, albeit an old and outdated term, but the intention behind it was still clear, and I agree, not remotely acceptable

God, how embarrassing, she’s such a twat. I wish people (like Norton) wouldn’t egg her on.

He loves her. He giggles away to all her silly crap. Didn't she say she'd 'creamed her knickers' when she met some famous bloke? She is absolutely revolting.

Yeah 'Benevolent Racism' is a thing. Hence, Jordan Peele's 'Get Out' line...
"I would have voted for Obama for a third term if I could."

Edited

I loved that movie. Part of what made it good was that its portrayal of white American tryhard liberals was only barely exaggerated.

How did this even come up in conversation?

Somebody's linked to an article upthread where it explains it all in context.

ValerieLafayette · Yesterday 13:07

Pearlstillsinging · Yesterday 12:58

It's definitely not a generational thing, it's a MM thing. She is a crude attention seeker who thinks she's funny even when no one else does.

My ex would try and excuse his mother's racism, and general cuntishness, as a generational thing, conveniently ignoring that nobody else we knew who was of a similar age behaved that way.

They like to shock, they like your discomfort, they like to see you squirm and not know what to say. They think they've got one over on you. They do it to try and feed their inner emptiness.

They get worse as they get older because that emptiness grows.

Ohhh, Thankyou, I see. It’s actually very literal. Ok!

OutOfTheOtherSide · Yesterday 13:08

I don't think she's a well woman. Her whole 'shtick' seems to involve pretending to be a cute little lady then being all crude and stupid.

For example can she get through an interview without farting or talking about farting or balls?

Discussing skin colour would seem a step too far even for this blithering idiot.

Edited

I dont think we should be giving her a get out clause of her not being 'a well woman'. She's vile, deliberately vile to hit headlines and make equally vile/stupid people laugh. She has surely stepped over the line this time which will keep her off our screens and take away the attention and exposure she so desperately craves.

Temptree · Yesterday 13:09

I just cannot believe she was racist to Andi.
On so many offensive levels.
He wasn't talking about his skin colour. Or his race. Or his parents. She literally just brought it up out of nowhere.
I cannot believe she made such ignorant assumptions about him and then used an offensive and outdated expression to describe how she views his skin colour. Why would she even comment on it???
She was meant to be talking about her book.
Also she kept on talking to Christine Lampard several times throughout the interview in an exaggerated northern Irish accent which I found offensive too. But Christine didn't seem to appear offended which I found surprising but maybe she's a consumate professional.
I really hope Ofcom receive complaints.

Your theory, I’m sorry, sounds like fiction at the expense of people you dislike rather than anything credible.

At 85 it’s difficult to know if it’s a generation thing or whether she’s hit dementia.

Or just her personality, maybe?

ValerieLafayette · Yesterday 13:10

That is not the case @Marellain .

CaptainMyCaptain · Yesterday 13:10

ACR7 · Yesterday 12:41

She described him as high yellow due to his shade of black. I’d not heard it before but google says it is an outdated and derogatory term. - just seen your update

Edited

It's a term that was used in the American South related to slavery. Enslaved people with lighter skin were most likely the result of rape by white slave owners but were given the 'better' jobs in the house rather than in the fields. I've never heard anyone say it out loud but have read it and heard the term in old American blues songs from the 1930s and 40s.

Deadringer · Yesterday 13:11

She is crude, vile and vulgar. Can't stand her, and her pathetic attempts to be relevant.

JackJarvisEsq · Yesterday 13:11

Well let’s hope no more broadcasters give her the time of day

SkipTheRecap · Yesterday 13:12

If she's not acting, she's excruciating to watch - vulgar, hyper and now apparently racist too. I've never seen the appeal of her, although when she was on The Real Marigold Hotel she calmed down a lot and was much more "normal".

What’s your theory, out of interest? (Or explanation of sorts.)

I been on the receiving end of more benevolent xenophobic rhetoric than I’ve had hot dinners, and wonder what propels people’s actions.

ExtraOnions · Yesterday 13:13

…and she excuses / rewards the bad behaviour of men (or claims to). Tells a story about walking through a park, happened upon a young man exposing himself, felt sorry for him, so wanked him off.

Delightful

I don’t know who andI peters is. What exactly was wrong with what she said? She asked him if he was mixed race, and he isn’t? Please explain! Oh ok just saw she said high yella. Is that from Tennessee?

Edited

A 'high yella/yellow' person is NOT a mixed race person. Also you can use Google to see a photo of Andi Peters

MeridianB · Yesterday 13:14

She’s been vile for years. And trying to get away with it under the guise of ‘quirky older lady’ when really it’s just rude and offensive. Hope she gets cancelled.

SemperIdem · Yesterday 13:15

She has been thoroughly unpleasant for years now. Why she is so consistently given air time baffles me.

Temptree · Yesterday 13:15

Oh interesting......I just switched to ITV+1 to watch it again as it was exactly an hour ago and they've removed the few minutes where she was racist.
It shows the start of the interview, then just as her racist remarks are about to start it suddenly goes to a black screen saying "We're unable to air this on ITV+1 we'll be back shortly". This stays with elevator music for a few mins and then it switches back to the end of the interview.

What's weird as well is that at the end Christine finishes up by saying to her "Thank you so much you've been so lovely."
Huh? Lovely?????

That is not the case @Marellain .

It might be true of your specific person that you know. Generalising serves no purpose and is innacurate. The likelihood of MM being anything other than very very wealthy and surrounded by adoring people like Graham Norton, is less than minuscule. She has a long term partner. I don’t actually enjoy MM, I find her unbearable. I think she’s more Margaret mead than the Empty shell you are projecting. She didn’t appear remotely racist when she was with worm eating aboriginals in the outback. She is a Jew.

She's been gross for years. I think she's just attention seeking but the conversation related by the OP is awful. Poor Andi Peters. Apart from anything has she ever met a Black or mixed race person? He is clearly Black. Not that it's any of her business, and to then bang on about ' welcoming' all people bloody hell. I can't stand her schtick. She should stick to reciting other people's words.
