I've got an annual leave day today and am spending the morning shamelessly on the sofa watching daytime TV with cups of tea and biscuits after an exhausting school summer hols. Kids back at school today. I've given myself permission to vegetate till 3:15pm.
So here I am watching This Morning and have just spent 5 minutes with my jaw wide open and hand over my mouth at what Miriam Margolyes just said to Andi Peters.
Did anyone else see it??
I mean it takes a lot to shock me. I am not easily shocked.
And this woman is currently doing a sell out tour??

She’s a horrible, racist, creepy, offensive woman. I know someone that knows her and she’s always been the same. Acting like she doesn’t realise seems to mean she gets away with it. I’ve never understood why.

The term is overtly racist - it's a deep south term that originates from the period of slavery where black people were categorised by skin tone, where lightness was prized above darker tones. It's repulsive.

Her personality is to be outrageous & inappropriate. That’s different from outright racism.

Everyone over the age of 70 has some degree of cerebral small vessel disease which causes some degree of cognitive impairment. Quite apart from incipient dementia.

So it’s difficult to know if she didn’t know any better or cognitive impairment is affecting her judgment.

She’s the age my mother started swearing at people.

If she's not acting, she's excruciating to watch - vulgar, hyper and now apparently racist too. I've never seen the appeal of her, although when she was on The Real Marigold Hotel she calmed down a lot and was much more "normal".

She did a series about Australia and New Zealand was considered and thoughtful and not 1 bit racist towards the indigenous people and was genuinely interested in the institutional racism and trauma they indured, she was maybe "managed" by the production team
. Let her out on her own and she is inappropriate and now racist!

It referred to lighter skin toned enslaved people. They would almost certainly have been mixed race but not consensually so.

My ex would try and excuse his mother's racism, and general cuntishness, as a generational thing, conveniently ignoring that nobody else we knew who was of a similar age behaved that way.

They like to shock, they like your discomfort, they like to see you squirm and not know what to say. They think they've got one over on you. They do it to try and feed their inner emptiness.

They get worse as they get older because that emptiness grows.

On so many offensive levels.
He wasn't talking about his skin colour. Or his race. Or his parents. She literally just brought it up out of nowhere.
I cannot believe she made such ignorant assumptions about him and then used an offensive and outdated expression to describe how she views his skin colour. Why would she even comment on it???
She was meant to be talking about her book.
Also she kept on talking to Christine Lampard several times throughout the interview in an exaggerated northern Irish accent which I found offensive too. But Christine didn't seem to appear offended which I found surprising but maybe she's a consumate professional.
I really hope Ofcom receive complaints.

She said to Andi "I bet you've got a black father and a white mother haven't you".
No context.
None.
Andi wasn't talking about his heritage.
He said "Actually both my parents are black". She acted surprised and said "Oh you look like a high yella"
Andy looked like he hadn't heard of this description so she elaborated by saying "It's what American people call black people who are a lighter shade of black"
Andy said he didn't know you could get 'different shades' which was said with an understandable sarcastic tone in his voice and he looked shocked.
She went on to say "Well it doesn't matter, we welcome people, we'll be inclusive......"
WTF? We need to be inclusive? Andi was born here, in Chelsea.
OMG
So many assumptions made by her based on his race. And blurting them out on national TV!
Christine Lampard looked like she just didn't know what to say.
Then Miriam was saying she's got strong views about people coming in to the country but at that point they cut her off and wrapped up the interview.
