The film Angel Face - Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons 1952

During the start he is describing his girlfriend and mentions she is 105lbs

I thought I'd misheard and maybe it was 125lbs but no, 105lbs

Thats 7 and a half stone.

Seems very tiny but AI tells me that is the usual sort of frame and weight to height ratio for actresses in those days. The actress playing the girlfriend was 5'4 apparently. So slight frame but not underweight

I was a bit surprised it was so low a weight.

Only someone brainwashed would think she is fat. I don't normally think Renee is attractive, but she was in Bridget Jones! The 'extra' weight really suited her.

Agree but she wore a fat suit for the next films because she hated being that weight so much.

The weight in the script didn't necessarily reflect her actual weight, but yeah, pretty normal.

This ^

The script is a work of fiction and the (fictional) weight of the character in the script doesn't necessarily bear any relation to the real life weight of the actress portraying the character.

The script is simply reflecting what was seen as a "desirable" characteristic for women of the time - ie being "petite"

This thread is clearly like honey to the bees for the teeny tiny eaters.

Who said anything about being teeny tiny eaters, I eat perfectly normal three meals a day why can’t some us be naturally petite & quite slight makes so cross when people think I must bloody starve & deny myself food.

I weigh 135lbs and I’m 6 inches taller than Renee Z. Didn’t she gain about 30lbs in order to look plump? She did look quite fat, btw.

I thought RZ was 6ft tall?

Tel12 · 01/09/2026 15:03

Everyone one was tiny back in the day. Look at photos of the 60s and 70s, very unusual to see anyone overweight. Over size 16 and you had to buy clothes at an OS shop. Come to think of it size 16 then is probably a size 14 now.

I have a feeling Bridget Jones was only 9 stone. I remember reading it and thinking she thinks she is fat?? But to be fair some women love to say they think they are fat at any weight. I'm not even talking about people with EDs, slim beautiful people talk about have fat or ugly day. Probably because they are either trying to relate to us ordinary folk or they are so obsessed with their looks that they attribute every thing, stress, emotion etc to something relative to their looks.

I found that so frustrating.

Bridget Jones in the book only thought she was overweight, so I never understood why they had to make such a big deal about Renee Zellwegger gaining weight for the part.

Yes, you said it better than me. I haven't seen the actress in question, but there's no reason to think the weight in question was accurate and likely to be smaller than her actual weight.

My comment was aimed at the poster who said Renee Zellwegger was fat in Bridget Jones, even though she weighed 9.5 stones and average height.

Why can’t I be cross at that but you can be cross?

If you eat healthy food that's high in fibre, you can eat quite large portions without gaining weight, because it transfers through the body at a healthy speed.

These days most diets are so low in fibre that it takes longer to move through our bodies and more macronutrients are transferred into our bodies.

If you eat a low fibre diet then you need to eat "teeny tiny amounts" to stay slim.

The above is why calorie counting is so flawed. Calories are measured by burning food entirely to ash. But when we eat (say) brown rice, or a shot of olive oil, most of it goes through us without all the energy being absorbed.

augustuss · 01/09/2026 15:08

That’s my weight but I’m shorter. I can understand that can be surprising to some people it. A very tall and rather wide woman was standing over me yesterday queueing and I was amazed by her size. But that’s people for you.

I'm 5.4" and 110 pounds/7.12 stones. I've lost about a stone recently due to peri, I don't look ill, just slight. There wasn't a lot of overweight people back in the 40's/50's and being smaller was "the normal".

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 01/09/2026 15:12

I was reading through some of my old diaries some months back, and found one from the early 1990s when I was mid 20s. I wrote in my diary that I was horrified that since giving up smoking (3 months earlier) I had gained TEN POUNDS, and was now a whopping 9 stone 9 pounds. Sick to the pit of my stomach I was, I had a 26 inch waist! 😱 I had started wearing my dad's baggy shirts to cover all my 'flab' and was only allowing photographs of me from the chest up.

Lost just over a stone for my wedding, (about a year later,) and felt better. but still felt a bit 'plump,' (I was 8 stone 7 then.) When I got the wedding photos back I thought they'd given me the wrong album for a minute. All I could see was this tall-ish blonde bloke, with a petite little blonde, who was around a size 10. I was a bit chubby at 8 stone 7 (so I thought!) so was expecting a little chubby ball in a wedding dress with a pink and peach bouquet.

Nope, the little petite size 10 blonde was ME.

I was so much slimmer than I thought.

Even at 9 and a half to 10 stone, (when I look back at photos,) I was slim - 25-26" waist, size 10-12 clothes (size 8-10 in today's clothes.) At 8 stone 7 I had a 24" waist and genuinely believed I was 'a bit chubby.'

Didn't help really that several lads I dated briefly called me 'a bit fat' when I was only around 9 to 9 and a half stone (with a 25-26" waist.) Some girls were a stone and a half lighter than me, and they compared me to them.

LondonLass2026 · 01/09/2026 15:16

I'm 5'3" and after losing a few stone recently, I went down to 8 stone 1lb. I'm a few lbs more now, but have stopped weighing myself as it was becoming an obsession.

I don't think 7.5 stone is weird at all. As a teenager, and up to the age of 21 (when I became pregnant) I was the same height and 7 stone on the dot. After a holiday in Asia when I was 17, I actually went down to 6 stone 13!

Manxexile · 01/09/2026 15:17

Thanks.

I'm a great (male) fan of Jean simmons and I wouldn't be surprised if she actually did weigh less than 8 stone.

She was born in 1929 and was an evacuee during the war and had to live through post-war rationing when nobody was overweight and arguably most people were better nourished (in terms of food quality) than they are now.

That would have laid a good foundation to have a low (compared to today) but healthy weight

She was probably a heavy smoker which would also keep her weight down.

magicbeany · 01/09/2026 15:19

I’m 5 foot 4 and was 7 and a half stone through my early mid twenties. And I ate chocolate croissants and giant bowls of pasta almost daily. Wish I still had that metabolism! 9 and a half stone now.

Backedoffhackedoff · 01/09/2026 15:20

Greenmouldycheese · 01/09/2026 14:56

Normal. I was that weight until I was 30 and 8 stone now at 39. Very normal weight.

5ft 4 and 71/2 stone is underweight weight. Saying normal twice doesn’t make it a normal weight

Kokonimater · 01/09/2026 15:20

Sounds normal.
I’m 5’3” and was 7.5 to 8 stone most of 20’s and 30’s.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 01/09/2026 15:21

I used to know someone who was 1m 60 tall and locked in an endless struggle to keep her weight above 7st. I never really believed that some women just don't put on weight until I met her. It really pissed her off!

thepurplepenguin · 01/09/2026 15:22

It's definitely underweight but it can be natural. I am 5'5" and 106 lbs, I am slim with a fairly small frame but I eat like a horse. I was recently in hospital for a few days for surgery and they were so concerned that they put me on those Fortisip shakes twice a day alongside meals to try to get my weight up! (it didn't work 🤣)

RosieHosie · 01/09/2026 15:22

Yeah, I'm not a teeny eater at all. I log my food actually to make sure I hit all my protein and calorie goals as I'm doing some strength training. I know I don't undereat. I also am a decent home baker so don't cut things out. All my family are slim.

Momon45 · 01/09/2026 15:24

I was 6 stones at 5ft in my late teens and twenties . This was the 60s and 70s . I felt perfectly normal at the time but now realise this was very low . I'm a lot more now and size 12 . All my friends were similar , it was the era when Twiggy was our role model .
I would be worried if my GD was that weight but she's a healthy size 12 .

NancyThompson · 01/09/2026 15:27

Women never used to work out much so presumably didn't have great muscle mass as they aged, which would contribute to being lighter.

I'm so glad that there's more of a focus on muscle mass now, and also body fat % rather than just weight alone.

Women, imo, kept themselves painfully thin - combine that with smoking and no HRT and no wonder osteoporosis was/is rife.

I’m 5’4”. I’m very small framed. I was seven stone exactly until I became pregnant at 29 and then for a while after. It gradually crept up in my 30s and 40s. I think it was more common back then.
