She weighs 105lbs...

The film Angel Face - Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons 1952

During the start he is describing his girlfriend and mentions she is 105lbs

I thought I'd misheard and maybe it was 125lbs but no, 105lbs

Thats 7 and a half stone.

Seems very tiny but AI tells me that is the usual sort of frame and weight to height ratio for actresses in those days. The actress playing the girlfriend was 5'4 apparently. So slight frame but not underweight

I was a bit surprised it was so low a weight.

There used to be an advert in the 80s, I can’t remember what it was for. Maybe weight watchers? But a woman was horrified that she was 9 st 2. I think many of us would love to be 9 st 2 these days, I know I would.

I have a feeling Bridget Jones was only 9 stone. I remember reading it and thinking she thinks she is fat?? But to be fair some women love to say they think they are fat at any weight. I'm not even talking about people with EDs, slim beautiful people talk about have fat or ugly day. Probably because they are either trying to relate to us ordinary folk or they are so obsessed with their looks that they attribute every thing, stress, emotion etc to something relative to their looks.

lifeinthemidlands · 01/09/2026 14:37

I was 5'3" and under 7.5 stone well into my 20s. I really didn't look and wasn't underweight - just small boned.

But back then she did look fat, and even now I’d say she was well-covered. My family and I are quite slim and we just find ourselves constantly amazed at the size of so many people these days. Fat has become normal.

I like The Philadelphia Story.

I didn’t like his more thriller type films.

He's very interesting in that he plays a lolloping comedy role fairly well, but also can be bloody sinister in the thrillers. He's quite frightening in this one at times.

I weigh 135lbs and I’m 6 inches taller than Renee Z. Didn’t she gain about 30lbs in order to look plump? She did look quite fat, btw.

Do you and your family also sit in the garden staring and amazed that the sky is blue?

I remember despairing over Bridget Jones' weight when I read those books in the 90s. I was about 10 stone and not fat at all, yet she weighed less than me and wanted to lose 20 pounds (and everyone seemed to agree that she was at least chubby).

Tbh I basically considered myself fat because I didn't look like Kate Moss. That was the only acceptable way to look for a teenager on those days. I remember when J Lo became famous, I couldn't believe she was allowed to be famous with such a huge bottom. (With hindsight of 30ish years, it is obviously a perfectly normal and very lovely bottom.) Thank god the internet didn't exist when I was a teenager.

Motomum23 · 01/09/2026 14:45

Up until I was 25 my weight was around 103lbs (47kgs) as i was too slim to give blood (have to be at least 50kgs)... i had already had two babies by then.

This thread is clearly like honey to the bees for the teeny tiny eaters.

I remember her saying how good it felt to be “voluptuous” at her Bridget Jones weight. Then lost the weight extremely quickly afterwards.

honeylulu · 01/09/2026 14:47

If you are of very slight build and below average height, it's possible to be that sort of weight without being unhealthily "skinny". (I've seen someone has clarified the actress was 5ft1.) People on average were shorter and lighter in those days, especially when young. We are more well fed these days and women are often more muscular too.

I can remember when Bonnie Langford was in Dancing on Ice and she said the lifts were not an issue because she was only 6 stone something and I thought whaaaattt? She's an adult woman and a mother! But she's actually tiny framed, 5ft1 with teeny hands and feet. She doesn't look emaciated.

But this thread called to mind the teen must-read, Forever by Judy Blume. The main character confirms that age and her mother are both exactly the same weight and height. 5 ft 6 and 109 pounds. That's about 7 stone 11 which sounds very skinny for that height , especially the mum (or mom) who must have been about 40! I can remember feeling quite shocked when I read it and worked it out, noting that I was both shorter and weighed more and yet was considered "slim" at the time (late 1980s).

You think this is fat?

Bridget in her bunny costume, does things to me. Sigh
Anyone (or their families) who considers this to be fat, needs to readjust their thoughts around women’s bodies.
And what they see as astounding and amazing out in the world.

JeanSimmons · 01/09/2026 14:48

I mean, he still left the girlfriend for me in that film, so I didn't feel too badly about it, (although to be fair, I only weighed a little more than that myself)
;-)

bingobanjo · 01/09/2026 14:48

5’5”, in my 30s, I’ve always been around 105lbs.

I am skinny of course and would be referred to as such but I don’t look distressingly thin and nobody has ever expressed concern.

My bones are very small. My arms and legs are like sticks and I never exercise so I don’t have any muscle really. I think I’m deceptively lighter than I look and people would not guess my weight correctly, have been told I must be mistaken when stating my (correct) BMI before.

Look into Kibbe body typing maybe. That’s based on actresses from that era and essentially says women’s frames and how they carry weight can vary hugely.

OxfordCircus · 01/09/2026 14:49

i was that weight in my early twenties. I’m 5ft7. I just didn’t gain weight easily and was very active. Now at almost 40, I weigh 145 pounds.

Reminds me of the first Bridget Jones film where she’s also desperate to be under 9 stone. My mum was the same when I was growing up and managed to get below 9 stone at one point which she felt was a huge achievement. She’s 5 ft 7 and looked like a skeleton.

The 00s was a horrible toxic time for women, much worse than now.

Minasama · 01/09/2026 13:59

I’m 5.4 and I weighed 7.5 stone for most of my 20s and early 30s. That’s a normal weight unless you’ve been brought up on UPFs…people are much bigger these days and have corresponding rates of diabetes and cancer because of it. It’s a big problem.

Edited

My mother was the same. She went up to 8 stone late forties and was shocked about it but laughed it off. She never dieted or ate low fat food or ever mentioned calories. But she wasn't obsessed with food either.

MrsShawnHatosy · 01/09/2026 14:38

Only someone brainwashed would think she is fat. I don't normally think Renee is attractive, but she was in Bridget Jones! The 'extra' weight really suited her.

Greenmouldycheese · 01/09/2026 14:56

Normal. I was that weight until I was 30 and 8 stone now at 39. Very normal weight.

TheBrunswick · 01/09/2026 14:56

Up until the 80’s everyone walked more, ate less rubbish, didn’t snack as much and most people had more active work.
Even changing the tv channel meant moving.

Now most of us graze, drive, have sedentary work and a tv remote.
There’s a reason gyms are so popular now.

placemats · 01/09/2026 14:58

165 cms and 63kgs. Happily a size 14. Age 65.

britnay · 01/09/2026 14:59

5ft3, I weighed less than that when I got married.

Moreholidaysthanjudithchalmers · 01/09/2026 14:59

I think frames were smaller due to lack of nutrition and smoking.
I was in a museum and the Victorian dresses ate tiny proportions. There was a maternity corset that looked like it would fit a tiny child. The 1950s dresses were a bit larger than Victorian but still small. Most modern rib cage’s wouldn’t fit.
