The film Angel Face - Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons 1952

During the start he is describing his girlfriend and mentions she is 105lbs

I thought I'd misheard and maybe it was 125lbs but no, 105lbs

Thats 7 and a half stone.

Seems very tiny but AI tells me that is the usual sort of frame and weight to height ratio for actresses in those days. The actress playing the girlfriend was 5'4 apparently. So slight frame but not underweight

I was a bit surprised it was so low a weight.

I’m 5ft4

i was eight stone dead on during most of my late teens and early twenties until I got pregnant with twins.

stealthninjamum · 01/09/2026 13:20

There used to be an advert in the 80s, I can’t remember what it was for. Maybe weight watchers? But a woman was horrified that she was 9 st 2. I think many of us would love to be 9 st 2 these days, I know I would.

Pootles34 · 01/09/2026 13:20

I've just quickly googled, I think it's around the lower end of average but not shockingly so? Some women are just very slight.

theemmadilemma · 01/09/2026 13:21

5ft1.5 ;)

I was 7.5 stone or under into well into my later 20's.

Not much over 8 at 50.

ACatNamedRobin · 01/09/2026 13:23

That was in the 50s, there were less UPFs and availability of ultra tasty calorific food, so people were a more normal weight then.

It's still in case across the world, look at Eastern Europe or China or Japan.

Lentilcakes · 01/09/2026 13:24

I’m slight and about 115lbs. I’m just under 5ft4. Have hands of a child 😂

Velumental · 01/09/2026 13:26

My mum was 5 foot in her younger years (shrank to 4 foot 9 over time) and never weighed over 7 stone. Imagine her horror at her hardy enormous daughter (me) at 5 foot 4 and over 10 stone wearing a size 12. Neither her nor my tiny aunts ever got over the enormity of me and my sisters. 😂

Daisywhatsyouranswer · 01/09/2026 13:26

7and A half stone at 5 ft 4 is a bmi of 18 and is underweight and was at the time.

PoisedBeaker · 01/09/2026 13:29

Take a look at the lyrics of "honey bun " 101lbs of fun.!

Nincompoo · 01/09/2026 13:29

i’m that height and haven’t been 7 stone since I was 18. I’d look like skeletor at that weight now.

Women were slimmer back in the day. They all survived on coffee, fags and benzo’s…actresses anyway

dreamiesformolly · 01/09/2026 13:34

sets up camp, takes out picnic and waits for the 'we've lost sight of what a healthy weight is' brigade to arrive

OnlyUsername · 01/09/2026 13:37

I was around 9st age 14 and still in kids clothes. If I eat basically nothing for a few months I can get down to about 9st12 but I can't do anything about my 32FFs, wide shoulders and wide pelvis.

I think in order to be an actress in the first place back then you needed to be starting with a petite bone structure before the benzos and cigarettes (which you can identify by the width of ankles and wrists). My wrists are too big to wrap a thumb and middle finger round.

AbacusCat · 01/09/2026 13:37

Borderline underweight - it does depend on frame size, it might be OK for someone with very small bones.

Bigcat25 · 01/09/2026 13:38

The weight in the script didn't necessarily reflect her actual weight, but yeah, pretty normal.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 01/09/2026 13:38

My sister in law is 4"10 and weighs about that. Her bones are tiny.

I'm 5"9 and when I weighed 8 and a half stone after an illness I looked like a skeleton. My bones are huge Viking wallopers.

My great gran was born in 1900 and was 4 feet 6! My 7 year old is taller than that.

TranscendentTiger · 01/09/2026 13:39

I think people underestimate how much weight changes with height. I'm slightly, but 5'7" and weigh 120lbs. I was lighter as a teen. I'm not surprised someone who is 5'4" would weight about 100lbs.

Backedoffhackedoff · 01/09/2026 13:39

Average Hollywood actress = anorexic, let’s be honest. They’re probably not dissimilar weights now

StationLift · 01/09/2026 13:41

It depends on build. I am 5 3 and my bmi only got up to 19 at the menopause. Thin arms and legs genetically. I have always been one of those people who eats loads without the weight. My family and friends have never worried. One friend always said, ‘you may be slim but never look fragile’. Some ‘petite’ people are just the build and weight they are meant to be. My young adult kids have turned out the same.

AbacusCat · 01/09/2026 13:42

Jean Simmons doesn't look unhealthily thin in this shot from the film - her arms are shapely rather than bony and her face is not in any way gaunt- I think she must simply have had a small, delicate frame.

She weighs 105lbs...
SilenceInside · 01/09/2026 13:43

I don't think you can take the weight mentioned in the script as the actual weight of the actress playing the part.

SilenceInside · 01/09/2026 13:43

The girlfriend is not played by Jean Simmons, it's an actress called Mona Freeman.

namechange6766333545544 · 01/09/2026 13:44

That’s about the height and weight that I was until my 30s. I ate a lot and couldn’t gain. It was normal for me and is normal for some people.

Ageing put a stop to it!

likelysuspect · 01/09/2026 13:44

Bigcat25 · 01/09/2026 13:38

Yes I wondered that, AI told me the actress is Mona Freeman and she was 'thin but realistic for the time'

At my lowest weight in my early 30s I was 7st 11. I am 5ft 4. I could wear girls size 13 to 14 in New Look. I looked awful and people regularly queried if i was unwell.

Ive seen the film about 10 times already.
