She weighs 105lbs...

The film Angel Face - Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons 1952

During the start he is describing his girlfriend and mentions she is 105lbs

I thought I'd misheard and maybe it was 125lbs but no, 105lbs

Thats 7 and a half stone.

Seems very tiny but AI tells me that is the usual sort of frame and weight to height ratio for actresses in those days. The actress playing the girlfriend was 5'4 apparently. So slight frame but not underweight

I was a bit surprised it was so low a weight.

Does it matter?

I’m 5”3 and the only time I’ve gone over 7.5 stone was pregnancy. It’s not exactly unheard of, I definitely see people as slim and slimmer than me daily.

Average Hollywood actress = anorexic, let’s be honest. They’re probably not dissimilar weights now

She doesnt look anorexic, she has normal looking arms and no lollypop head.

So perhaps like other said, her weight isnt what is in the script.

I'm 55, 5'2 and 7stone 7. I'm slim but not skinny. I'm very small bone, the definition of petite. The same sort of body that was common in the 70s and didn't raise any eyebrows then.

SilenceInside · 01/09/2026 13:47

@likelysuspect apologies, I should have quoted or tagged @AbacusCat who was talking about Jean Simmons.

YvieYfronts · 01/09/2026 13:48

People are also taller now so it’s not surprising they get are also heavier. Chart shows average global height from 1930 to 1996.

People used to be smaller. A size 10 today is much bigger than a size 10 a few decades ago. People eat much more now, snack more, eat junk and are unsurprisingly fatter. Emotional eating plays a part too.

Waitingfordoggo · 01/09/2026 13:49

As PP said- frame size is really important and is a factor that isn’t often taken into account. My DD and I are similar heights but I have a much bigger frame than her. My shoulders and ribcage are broader, my feet are bigger, my wrists and hands are bigger. She looks lovely at 8st whereas I look emaciated at that weight.

I was around 9st age 14 and still in kids clothes. If I eat basically nothing for a few months I can get down to about 9st12 but I can't do anything about my 32FFs, wide shoulders and wide pelvis.

I think in order to be an actress in the first place back then you needed to be starting with a petite bone structure before the benzos and cigarettes (which you can identify by the width of ankles and wrists). My wrists are too big to wrap a thumb and middle finger round.

This. I’m 5ft 10 and haven’t weighed less than 9stone since I was at school. I take a size 8 shoe. I’m female, but I’m pretty certain I would not have got work as an actress back in the day.

Edit to add I’m astonished that 5’4 is average height. I don’t know these tiny people. Everyone I know is around my height.

I might have thought that until I saw she was average height. 5'4 is average in the UK

My sister in law is 4"10 and weighs about that. Her bones are tiny.

I'm 5"9 and when I weighed 8 and a half stone after an illness I looked like a skeleton. My bones are huge Viking wallopers.

My great gran was born in 1900 and was 4 feet 6! My 7 year old is taller than that.

Im 4'10 and weigh 7st 4lb so similar. I have small wrists and hands but the rest of me isnt tiny, at all. In fact I look quite "average" and am in the middle of the healthy bmi range (21) I suppose it depends how your weight is distributed.

Trumpisacunt · 01/09/2026 13:51

I can remember getting my Mums 1950's wedding dress out of the loft when we were clearing her house and the waist was tiny and the only person who could have realistically fitted into it was my 10 year old niece....My mum was always 'average size' and you'd never have described her as skinny !

As another poster said, it’s underweight now and was underweight then

likelysuspect · 01/09/2026 13:52

I remember seeing a clip of an interview with Dolly Parton, might have been with Parky, she was bemoaning that she had put on weight and described herself as weighing 'a hundred and plenty', which I took to mean she was more than 120lbs and she would have wanted to be around that weight (one of her famous quips)

And I thought at the time that was tiny.

There’s a scene in Batman (1989) where Batman asks Kim Basinger how much she weighs before using his grapple hook to get away. They escape but when they land he tells her that she must weigh more than 108lb as if that’s shocking for a 5 foot 7 woman. That was the first time I noticed that kind of detail in a movie.

Well only just and she certainly doesnt look it (assuming it is of course the actresses weight)

I'm 5 ft 4 and a half and when not pregnant, I'm normally around 8stone to 8 stone 2. If I get ill or stressed I easily drop down to seven and a half but I look awful! 7 stone 10 is the lowest a 5 ft 4 person can go to without being classed as underweight I think. I'm not sure who the actress is, but most people wouldn't look their best at that weight unless they had an extremely small frame.

TooOrangey · 01/09/2026 13:54

That’s a pretty normal weight for someone of her height. My sister is that height and weighs 7 stone.

I mean I would expect someone of that height to be around 10 or 11 stone!!

There used to be a really old song which went '101 pounds of fun, that's my little honeybun ...'

Kingdomofsleep · 01/09/2026 13:55

I was that weight before having kids (I'm 5ft3ish). I did look a bit bony but not extreme.

I do think our eye for overweight has changed though. I know someone upthread says that's a cliched thing to say but it's true.

And our eye for underweight too, it would seem

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 01/09/2026 13:57

@likelysuspect according to Google Mona Freeman wasn't 5ft 4 she was just under 5ft 1 and a half inches! 1.56 metres.

grannycake · 01/09/2026 13:57

I’m 5 1 and weigh 105. Very smal frame. I’m thin but not skinny. I’m 70 yrs old

TheBewleySisters · 01/09/2026 13:57

Modern sizes too have skewed the way we view things like this. Back in the early 70s I was a standard size 12 and measured 34-24-36 and my best friend was a standard size 10 measuring 32-22-34.
