She weighs 105lbs...

The film Angel Face - Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons 1952

During the start he is describing his girlfriend and mentions she is 105lbs

I thought I'd misheard and maybe it was 125lbs but no, 105lbs

Thats 7 and a half stone.

Seems very tiny but AI tells me that is the usual sort of frame and weight to height ratio for actresses in those days. The actress playing the girlfriend was 5'4 apparently. So slight frame but not underweight

I was a bit surprised it was so low a weight.

But back then she did look fat, and even now I’d say she was well-covered. My family and I are quite slim and we just find ourselves constantly amazed at the size of so many people these days. Fat has become normal.

The long winter evenings must fly by…

My mum was 5ft 2 and 98lbs, was seen as totally normal in the 70’s, I absolutely believe her, I’ve seen her teeny tiny clothes from then. They walked everywhere and food had to be made and was limited by who could snaffle the most fastest.

I was around 9st age 14 and still in kids clothes. If I eat basically nothing for a few months I can get down to about 9st12 but I can't do anything about my 32FFs, wide shoulders and wide pelvis.

I think in order to be an actress in the first place back then you needed to be starting with a petite bone structure before the benzos and cigarettes (which you can identify by the width of ankles and wrists). My wrists are too big to wrap a thumb and middle finger round.

Ooops! Your wrist comment confused me as I certainly don’t have a petite bone structure (as far as I know!) being 5ft 8 inches tall, size 8 in shoes and weighing in at 11stone 6 pounds. Yet I can wrap my thumb and middle finger effortlessly around my wrist. Heck I can wrap my thumb and little finger effortlessly around my wrist!!

grinandslothit · 01/09/2026 14:26

I used to weigh that until my early 30s I am small framed and short 5' 4
My daughter weighs less than that she is in her forties and 5'0

No eating disorder no drugs no cigarettes involved

katseyes7 · 01/09/2026 14:27

I'm 5'2" and l was seven and a half stone when l was a teenager in the 70s.
I was a size eight. Slim, but l'm pretty sure l wasn't skinny or underweight.

It wasn’t back then. It was green BMI!

Are we talking underweight or lower than average weight? Those are two different things.

Why do you think BMi has changed?

The nhs recommends someone 71/2 stone and 5ft 4 see their GP

Eh? If it's a film then it's fiction- just because the character describes his girlfriend as 105lbs doesn't mean that the actress really weighed that amount- he's reading a script!

Cries in 5ft 10 and 165lbs 😭😭😭

what I’d give to have been delicate and waif like growing up. Even now and I strength train hard and have good muscle, I’d love to be smaller but with the muscle I’ve worked for. Happy enough with my clothes size but ah, I’ve always loved the willowy waif look.

I’m 5ft4

i was eight stone dead on during most of my late teens and early twenties until I got pregnant with twins.

Do you think becoming an adult also was a factor?
Women starved themselves, or cut their appetite with cigarettes. Watch the way Women were spoken about, it was creepy, the men wanted children and childlike frames. Women were portrayed as hysterical and not able to handle things. By the time they hit menopause their bones were in a very poor state. In the 70s, you'd see women bent in two because of osteoporosis, it was usual for women to shrink. 120 lbs was the general ideal. When you consider penis portions, girls were fed even worse, from childhood girls were undernourished and small because of it. My grandmother used to say you didn't see girls with shiny hair, lots of energy and good complexions, when she was growing up, or had her children, that my children had.

Yes, I was about to say this!

I'm 5'4 and had always naturally been around 8-8.5 stone. I've (unintentionally) lost a bit of weight and am now around 7 stone 11lbs, which puts my BMI in the underweight category.

Something I've noticed is that people are very keen to point out that 7.5 stone at 5'4" is BMI 18 and therefore underweight, but statistically very few 5' 4" women do weigh that, whereas lots are over 10.5 stone, and therefore overweight, but people are less keen to make the point to others that they are overweight.

I really hope people whose BMI is a smidge underweight isnt clogging up GP appointments

Thats like me rocking up to the GP being slightly overweight (ok, the word slightly is a bit of a lie at the moment)

My mum was 5 foot in her younger years (shrank to 4 foot 9 over time) and never weighed over 7 stone. Imagine her horror at her hardy enormous daughter (me) at 5 foot 4 and over 10 stone wearing a size 12. Neither her nor my tiny aunts ever got over the enormity of me and my sisters. 😂

My nan was 4' 11" tall. She gave birth to her first child, my uncle, a ten pound bruiser, in 1938, no forceps or anything. Makes me wince just to think of it!

TheFairyCaravan · 01/09/2026 14:30

I’m 55, 5ft 4 and weigh 7st 12. The heaviest I’ve ever been was 9st 4 and that was when I was 9mths pregnant with DS1.

I have a very small frame. My legs and arms are like sticks. When I started secondary school I went in an aged 7-8 skirt because I was that little.

In a similar vein, I remember an advert from a similar time (possibly for jeans?) where a woman stood on some scales which span round to 8 stone, which she was happy with and which set in my teen mind that 8 stone was the weight I should aim for. I am quite tall so this was a daft target!

I was exactly the same. Had 8 stone in my head as a target weight for years as a young un. At 5 ft 6 and fairly athletic of build it was never going to happen.

I remember in my early 20s telling someone my weight was 9 stone and they were shocked and said that I didn't look 'that big'. They were 5ft nothing so we were obviously operating off different ideas as to what counts as heavy but even though I knew that I was slim it still fucked me up a bit.

It wasn't until a while back my weight dropped to 8st 9 and I was all ribs and bones that I finally became really OK with my weight being around 9 stone.

I pray that my dd has a better relationship with her weight and body than I did, growing up in the late 90s early 00s was a mind fuck. The glorifying of 'size 0' was something else.

I thought I had misheard, I thought it couldnt possibly be 105lbs.

4'10 is very very different from 5'4. Height makes a big difference to health weight range. Minimum healthy weight according to NHS BMI is 6 stone 4 at 4'10. Whereas it is 7 stone 10 at 5'4. And 9 stone 3 at 5'10.

Yes I fully understand this, I was replying to a poster who said their relative was 4'10 and tiny at 105lb.

Unwellandupset · 01/09/2026 14:32

I’m 5’4”, in my 40’s with 3 kids and weigh 7 1/2 stone. Some people are just slight, I’m always investigated by the food police every time I get pregnant, yet all my babies have been over 8lbs! I’ve just a very fast metabolism

nomas · 01/09/2026 14:32

I remember the halcyon days of being that height and weight, I didn’t feel slight, I was actually pretty strong.

I’m 5.4 and I weighed 7.5 stone for most of my 20s and early 30s. That’s a normal weight unless you’ve been brought up on UPFs…people are much bigger these days and have corresponding rates of diabetes and cancer because of it. It’s a big problem.

Edited

Diabetes and cancer can largely be treated.

No cure for osteoporosis, though. People might not die of it unless they slip and break their hip (a very common cause of death in older women in particular), but I wouldn't want my mother's constant pain and disability from it by the age of 35.

I didn’t like his more thriller type films.

4ft10 so a good bit shorter than her but I was 6st7 until I had ds and I wasn't overweight but I wasn't skinny

Being underweight is medically more risky than being overweight.

demonstrated by the NHS BMi calculator telling someone with a BMi of 18 to see a GP and someone with a BMI of 25.2 to calculate their waist height ratio and visit the healthy lifestyle pages.
