She weighs 105lbs...

The film Angel Face - Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons 1952

During the start he is describing his girlfriend and mentions she is 105lbs

I thought I'd misheard and maybe it was 125lbs but no, 105lbs

Thats 7 and a half stone.

Seems very tiny but AI tells me that is the usual sort of frame and weight to height ratio for actresses in those days. The actress playing the girlfriend was 5'4 apparently. So slight frame but not underweight

I was a bit surprised it was so low a weight.

I'm 5'4" and was 7.5 stone in my teens and early twenties - I ate like a horse but could never put weight on, and I was fit and active. It was just my metabolism - now as a postmenopausal overweight woman who puts weight on just looking at food I marvel how things have changed!

That was in the 50s, there were less UPFs and availability of ultra tasty calorific food, so people were a more normal weight then.

It's still in case across the world, look at Eastern Europe or China or Japan.

Smoking, lots and lots of smoking. And stimulants.

Also there are a number of actresses from that period had incredibly disordered eating.

tommyhoundmum · 02/09/2026 18:40

I was always 5ft 1 and 8st 2lb. I'm now 4ft 10 and the same weight. Annoying really this shrinkage.

thicklysettled · 02/09/2026 18:41

Funny how perceptions change.

I'm 5'10 with broad shoulders and "strong bones" (according to my most recent DEXA scan.) I found an old diary from when I was 14 (and my current height.) I was a bit upset because we were weighed in PE and I was told to lose weight. I weighed 10 stone 4lbs. I look back on photos and if anything I look like I need to eat more.

Pootles34 · 01/09/2026 13:20

I've just quickly googled, I think it's around the lower end of average but not shockingly so? Some women are just very slight.

This. Some people look (and are) healthy at a lower weight if their bone structure is small. They might not even look scarily skinny.

I’m 5ft3 and 47 or 48kg, and I don’t look bony or too thin. I just have a small frame.

Lifeomars · 02/09/2026 18:50

As a teenager in the 70's and at 5' 7 i weighed around 9 stone 2 pounds, measured 34/24/34 and was at least a stone heavier than most of my shorter friends. it used to worry me! I've kept a couple of outfits from what was in retrospect my "skinny era! and they are tiny, I'm a big old lump now but still have a small waist. I wish I'd realised I was fine as I was as a young woman instead of fretting about being "fat"

menopausalfart · 02/09/2026 18:53

I was that weight/height ratio for most of my adult life until meno hit.

Snap!

dcthatsme · 02/09/2026 18:54

I don’t think snacks were a thing in those days. We are huge in comparison- taller too

Aluna · 02/09/2026 19:01

I’m 5’4 and 110 lbs. I’ve been this weight since I was 18.

I just think everyone has got so large they’ve lost sight of normal. And now bizarrely associate slimness with anorexia despite its low actual incidence.

Supermam · 02/09/2026 19:14

I haven’t read all the posts, so I’m not sure if anyone mentioned that it wasn’t long after the war and rationing continued for a while. Sweets and snacks weren’t available and were not part of the psyche. My mother had a tiny waist when she married in the 60s; that was the norm. I could never have worn her wedding dress, even as a slim teenager! With better nutrition, fast food (and unlimited availability) etc, we are bigger. I’m sure social historians could explain it better! Apologies if this has already been discussed.

noroomonbroom10 · 02/09/2026 19:33

Was watching Mission Impossible with Thandie Newton as the jewel thief.
Tom Cruise suggests they reset the pressure sensor to 40kgs.

Washingupdone · 02/09/2026 19:40

Everyone was slim in the 1950s, sugar was in ration till ‘53. If you look at old photos or films no one is fat. Then came the 60 s and with more money people started to eat out and nibble between meals. When I was growing up we didn’t have snacks. In the 70s people ate on factory food. If you buy clothes on vinted from this time, you will notice your usual size is not fitting into the clothes.

BandyAid · 02/09/2026 19:40

Im 5 3 and was that weight as a young adult. Just petite and slim build.

rolloverbeethoven · 02/09/2026 19:49

I remember reading "Valley of the Dolls", brilliant book, but one character puts on a huge and shocking amount of weight and is - gasp - almost ten stone! I mean, I wish...

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 02/09/2026 19:56

I'm 5'2" and often I used to take for granted how slim I was during my teenage years and ib my 20s, size 10. I weighed around 8 stone untl I had my three children, and perimenopause took over haha! Now 8 stone seems a lifetime ago, and very thin compared to my nearly 11 stone size 12 now!

So I guess it isn't unusual to be very slim and not weigh much. Compared to the sizes today, perhaps those sizes and weights are absolutely ok.

Zanatdy · 02/09/2026 20:01

My mum is 5ft 3 and often weighed 7 stone or just over. It’s thin, but not eating disorder concern thin.

likelysuspect · 01/09/2026 13:50

I might have thought that until I saw she was average height. 5'4 is average in the UK

Only if you also include the elderly (who lose 1-2 inches as they age and often had very poor nutrition in childhood also); teenagers who haven’t finished growing; ethnic minorities who are genetically disposed to being far smaller than northern Europeans; and people living in poverty or with very poor diets as children (malnourishment in childhood reduces adult height by 2 inches on average).

When you strip out these confounding factors from the data the average height of adult women 20-45 in the UK is around 5’9”. For men it is 5’11-6’0”.

IStillHearTheWaves · 02/09/2026 20:12

likelysuspect · 01/09/2026 13:54

I mean I would expect someone of that height to be around 10 or 11 stone!!

Again, depends on frame. I am taller that 5'7 and would be fat at 11 stone.

Can you show where you've got this from? I'm 165cm and was pretty much average/slightly taller than average in my very white school, in my 30s...

This. I’m 5ft 10 and haven’t weighed less than 9stone since I was at school. I take a size 8 shoe. I’m female, but I’m pretty certain I would not have got work as an actress back in the day.

Edit to add I’m astonished that 5’4 is average height. I don’t know these tiny people. Everyone I know is around my height.

Edited

I’m 5ft 9 and the only people i
know who are taller than me are men. Obviously I see women out and about but in my friends and family circle I’m the tallest by at least 3 inches . My best friend is 8 inches shorter than me

Exactly! I’m petite too. My whole frame is kind of scaled down. So, although I’m ‘only’ 103lbs, I’m well-covered, well-muscled and strong. I’m around 5’2 tall.

I’ve always been petite and slim and I’ve always eaten a lot. It’s just my build, my metabolism and my lifestyle. Some women are naturally slim and/or petite.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 02/09/2026 20:33

My ex was that weight at 6ft 5

MiaKulper · 02/09/2026 20:34

@SideEyeClyde , could you provide some proof of your claim because it sounds to contradict any statistics I've seen.
