The film Angel Face - Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons 1952

During the start he is describing his girlfriend and mentions she is 105lbs

I thought I'd misheard and maybe it was 125lbs but no, 105lbs

Thats 7 and a half stone.

Seems very tiny but AI tells me that is the usual sort of frame and weight to height ratio for actresses in those days. The actress playing the girlfriend was 5'4 apparently. So slight frame but not underweight

I was a bit surprised it was so low a weight.

@Goldenbear , it's still down to the genes.

Yes but your statement, "heritage or ethnicity don't make someone talk and slim" as they can and do.

That should read .... "don't make someone tall and slim" is not categorically true. However, perhaps it is an argument in semantics!

There is no point arguing with you. The ethnicity makes it likely but it's the genes are what determines it.

Musermum · 02/09/2026 17:55

My mum was 7.5 st when she got married in 1960 at 22 (5ft 2) and stayed that until she had my sister 6 years later.

bananaobama · 02/09/2026 17:56

They all smoked back then. She died from lung cancer although made it to the ripe ild age of 80

Ralphonso · 02/09/2026 17:57

I’m 31, 5ft5 and 103lbs. 28FF. UK size 6 on top and 4 on bottom. I’m thin but don’t look unhealthy or like ‘skeletor’. It’s bloody hard to maintain though!

OneNewLeader · 02/09/2026 17:58

In the 70’s/80’s quite typical of my family/friends.

stealthninjamum · 01/09/2026 13:20

There used to be an advert in the 80s, I can’t remember what it was for. Maybe weight watchers? But a woman was horrified that she was 9 st 2. I think many of us would love to be 9 st 2 these days, I know I would.

I remember that where she’s trying to block out the sound of the scale !!! 🙈

5ft 1in and I was just under 7 and a half stones in my teens and twenties.
I wasn't particularly 'thin' either. Just small framed. Double figures now, of course.

NetZeroZealot · 02/09/2026 18:06

When I was 21 in the 1980s I joined Weight Watchers. My target weight was 7 stone 12. I think I was just over 9 stone at the time. I weigh a lot more now but am happy with my weight and my BMI is still within the healthy range!!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/09/2026 18:06

I’m 5.5 and for all of my teens I was 7.5 stone then puberty hit late and I went up to 10

ArtesianWater · 02/09/2026 18:07

I think in order to be an actress in the first place back then you needed to be starting with a petite bone structure before the benzos and cigarettes

This. I worked in the industry 20 yrs ago and bigger actresses were quickly drummed out. It was well known and acknowledged. It's only in very recent years that we've seen a range of different sized women on screen. There's only so thin you can be if you don't have the underlying frame for it.

I was that weight in my teens / early 20s.

People have so so used to obesity that it seems unhealthy but I was not underweight

minipie · 02/09/2026 18:12

I weighed 7.5 stone at 21 after a stressful period. I’m 5’3. I was definitely thin but didn’t look ill or skeletal. My standard weight was 8st and I ate and drank whatever I felt like.

Age is relevant! Teens and young 20 somethings are just slimmer.

Yogafiend · 02/09/2026 18:14

That is a normal weight for someone who is 5ft4…

Middleagedspreadisreal · 02/09/2026 18:21

I was that wight and height - in the early 80s mind you 🙈

pucelleauxblanchesmains · 02/09/2026 18:22

7.5 stone at 5'4 is objectively underweight. Not "normal for the 50s before we Lost Sight Of A Healthy Weight". Not "a bit on the slim side". It is a BMI of below 18.5, albeit slightly, so not something an adult should aim for. I have no idea why people think the healthy weight range only applies at the top end.

TrojanDonkey · 02/09/2026 18:23

I was that weight until I had children in my 30s, I’m 5ft2.

I was under 8 stone when I got married, age 18, in 1974. 5ft 4”. And who can forget Twiggy?

It’s not particularly unusual for those times - average weight has increased.

GeraldineGrainger · 02/09/2026 18:24

Size 10 was 32-22-32, 12 was 34-24-34, 24, I was a 14 which was 36-26-36. This was late 60s/early 70s. I am 5 ft 2 and a half and weighed 8st 8 and thought I was huge. Wish I weighed 8st 8 now....one of my sister's ate like a horse but not junk and had an 18 inch waist in her early 20s. However, proper home cooked meals, nothing between as a rule, sweets only as a treat at weekend and no car so we walked or on occasions caught a bus. Mostly walked miles everywhere.

rathersleepy · 02/09/2026 18:25

I’m 5 foot 1 and look so gaunt at that weight. Depends on your build though

GrouvilleMaLuv · 02/09/2026 18:27

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 01/09/2026 13:38

My sister in law is 4"10 and weighs about that. Her bones are tiny.

I'm 5"9 and when I weighed 8 and a half stone after an illness I looked like a skeleton. My bones are huge Viking wallopers.

My great gran was born in 1900 and was 4 feet 6! My 7 year old is taller than that.

Your gran was very tall for a baby!

sorry, couldn’t resist, I’ll get my coat 👣👣👣🤪

MokaEfti · 02/09/2026 18:29

Totally normal. In the US in the 90s I got weighed at a gym. I didn’t understand pounds so I remembered my weight in pounds in order to translate it later, and actually that figure was 105 llb. Obviously I weigh more now but that was pres children etc. I am 5 foot 5.5. That is a totally normal weight (I was 26).

Kerri126 · 02/09/2026 18:31

I’m 5’4” and until my mid 20’s weighed about 7 and a half stone, couldn’t put weight on on for love nor money - pity that didn’t last, now in my mid 40’s I struggle to stay below 9 and a half stone 😤
