She weighs 105lbs...

The film Angel Face - Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons 1952

During the start he is describing his girlfriend and mentions she is 105lbs

I thought I'd misheard and maybe it was 125lbs but no, 105lbs

Thats 7 and a half stone.

Seems very tiny but AI tells me that is the usual sort of frame and weight to height ratio for actresses in those days. The actress playing the girlfriend was 5'4 apparently. So slight frame but not underweight

I was a bit surprised it was so low a weight.

Only if you also include the elderly (who lose 1-2 inches as they age and often had very poor nutrition in childhood also); teenagers who haven’t finished growing; ethnic minorities who are genetically disposed to being far smaller than northern Europeans; and people living in poverty or with very poor diets as children (malnourishment in childhood reduces adult height by 2 inches on average).

When you strip out these confounding factors from the data the average height of adult women 20-45 in the UK is around 5’9”. For men it is 5’11-6’0”.

Edited

any actual stats for this or.....? I won't hold my breath given your whole analysis could be summed up as 'if you exclude all short people from your data set then on average people are tall...' Which yeah, no shit sherlock.

Love the thinly veiled racism in suggesting that 'ethnic minorities' don't count as real UK women, as well.

Very few people grow significantly after the age of 18, as well.

Chickadee26 · 02/09/2026 20:36

So was I until my third baby.

MiaKulper · 02/09/2026 20:41

@HobgoblinNorFoulFiend , where I live there is a large proportion of people of south asian heritage and many of the women are shorter than me. Even my north european neighbour is shorter than me.

There are women taller than me but I doubt they are taller than 5'7". There are a few tall slender women but not many.

Chipsahoy · 02/09/2026 20:41

I weigh that. Same height. BMI might say underweight but I’m not for my frame.

InSlovakiaTheCapitalOfCourseIsBratislava · 02/09/2026 20:44

People nowadays are a lot fatter .
105lb was the slimmer end of normal for that height

I don’t think snacks were a thing in those days. We are huge in comparison- taller too

Never had snacks when I was young and hardly ever had a take away. The small city i grew up in had a MacDonalds and a Kentucky but they were miles away from where i lived so we hardly ever went there. I still don't snack, or hardly and I have to be really hungry. I now live in a city that must have about 5 Macdonalds and the nearest Kentucky is about 5 mins away, near the Subway and over the road from the chip shop and round the corner from the Chinese take away.

Speak for yourself. I weigh the same as I did at 16.

Wow. What are the odds of living in a wealthier than average area with very few ethnic minorities and rarely meeting these average women of 5' 9". Also frequently meeting men who are taller than 6'.

I must be a statistical anomaly.

MiaKulper · 02/09/2026 21:04

@iwishitwouldstartraining , you live in Lilliput too?

SemperIdem · 02/09/2026 21:07

5’9 is absolutely not the current average height for women in the UK. I think there is actually statistical evidence that British children are becoming shorter than their mainland European counterparts.

Ilikeviognier · 02/09/2026 21:16

Im 5ft 2 and weight about 7 stone 6. I’m thin but not unhealthy so. I’ve been like this my whole life. Surely it’s not that uncommon is it?

JayJayj · 02/09/2026 21:20

I’m 5’5”, I was between 7st3 and 7st7 from my teens to late 20s. A size 6 with boobs. I was underweight at the lower end but I look fine at 7st 7. I wouldn’t want to go back to that now. I’m happy at 9st.

Grapewrath · 02/09/2026 21:22

I’m 5ft 4 and when I fell pregnant I was told I was underweight and needed to change my diet. I was 7st.
i was a size 6-8
and didn’t seem thin or smaller than my friends and was surprised to be underweight.

Happyher · 02/09/2026 21:22

I’m 5’4” and weighed 7 1/2 stone in the 80’s till I had children. It was pretty normal and many of my friends weighed around the same

seahorsessky · 02/09/2026 21:22

A maternity book from around this time had some comment about the average woman being 7 and a half stone, and a man, who worked in a heavy manual labour job, was ten something. Admittedly women weren't "supposed" to be muscly, even in the 80s/90s, compare He-Man and She-Ra-her arms are completely straight with no muscle, and muscle weighs more than fat.

Gonksmum · 02/09/2026 21:34

I was that height and weight aged 17-19 and in a size 10 - mid-80s 10, that is. It's thin but not ridiculously so.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 02/09/2026 21:50

My Grandad died 10 years ago, at almost 100. He never snacked and if you offered him a biscuit or cake or even a 'healthy' snack in the afternoon he would say 'don't be ridiculous, I'll be eating dinner at 6.' Developing an appetite was spoken of positively, never eat something to ruin your appetite, work up an appetite, you've a great appetite god bless you (to me). He always emptied his plate and looked critically at those that didn't. My mother was raised that way and praised us for eating, extra marks if you asked for seconds. The problem arose when people of that mentality lived in an era of UPFs, dinners prepared in a rush, late night shops, convenience foods etc. That led to her raising two obese children.

The average height for women is not 5' 9 😂
I have exactly one friend that height and she modelled!

Can you show where you've got this from? I'm 165cm and was pretty much average/slightly taller than average in my very white school, in my 30s...

Same height as you and I'm slightly more likely to be taller rather than shorter than other adult non-elderly women.

MiaKulper · 02/09/2026 22:01

@Dontlletmedownbruce , I think slim people eat differently. My slim friends and family eat slowly and don't eat between meals, eat lots of veg and fruit.
The overweight ones eat things like cakes, crisps, biscuits and beige food and wolf their food.

This is only based on people I know but it's consistent.
(I'm not completely virtuous - I had some chocolate after lunch. )

Meanwhile, in the real world (per NHS)

Women
Age 16-24: 163.7cm
Age 25-34: 164.4cm
Age 35-44: 164.3cm
Age 45-54: 163.2cm
Age 55-64: 162cm
Age 65-74: 159.8cm
Age 75+ : 157.1cm

Even the tallest age demographic is shorter than 5'5".

MarchingOnTogether · 02/09/2026 22:13

Im almost that height and I was the same weight as a teen.
My mum always made fat jokes about me, and by the age of 21 I was closer to 8 stone and got told to lose weight by a male gp too 😂🙄🙄

SchoolMum66 · 02/09/2026 22:28

ACatNamedRobin · 01/09/2026 13:23

That was in the 50s, there were less UPFs and availability of ultra tasty calorific food, so people were a more normal weight then.

It's still in case across the world, look at Eastern Europe or China or Japan.

Edited

Yes. It's not that people were underweight then; but many people are overweight now, and it's considered 'normal'.

I was about 7 stone when I finished school, then up to 8 stone by my mid 20s and have stayed the same ever since, I'm now 60. Not underweight, just healthy.

Average height of UK women (however they are formed) has been 5'4 for many decades. I think an increase from 5'2.

The average height of most women is no where near 5'9

I just checked, and the tallest women in Europe are in Groningen in the Netherlands. The average height for a young, native Dutch woman there is about 5 ft 7.5, STILL not 5.9, and they're in fact the tallest female population group in the world.
