AIBU to make a roast when my daughter asked me not to?

Adult daughter 22 is not a fan of roast dinners. She asked me if I could not do a roast dinner today and make something else which I agreed to. However I had a chicken in freezer that needed using up today but I did make a pasta bake which is something she likes as an alternative. I like to make a family dinner on a Sunday for us all. Daughter was disappointed about the roast but I explained to her I had to use chicken up but I did make something she liked as alternative. She said to me you told me you wouldn’t make a roast and she looked upset. She didn’t go hungry though as she had Cottage Pie after saying there’s nothing to eat. AIBU to of made the roast even though there was pasta dish as alternative or was she being unreasonable here as I feel bad about it.

Maybe she could cook next time. Bloody hell you made her a pasta bake.

TyneTeas · Yesterday 23:21

If the chicken was in the freezer, why did it need to be used today?

Nofeckingway · Yesterday 23:21

Tell her to cook her own Sunday dinner then . You are not a personal chef .

Because of the date

Why should she care if you made a roast for everyone else, if you went to the trouble of making a whole additional option for her? She’s being ridiculous.

Why did a frozen chicken need eating today? Where did the cottage pie come from? Why didn't she eat the pasta bake?

TyneTeas · Yesterday 23:26

Because of the date

But you can keep chicken in the freezer for months, it isn't going to degrade for an extra week or two

FaceEatingLeopard · Yesterday 23:27

The frozen chicken had a ‘use by if frozen’ date? Is that a thing?

Because of the date

Did you buy the bird fresh and freeze it?

Did she have cottage pie or pasta? Did everyone else have roast chicken?

I'm struggling with your posts and what you mean.

You both sound like a pair of complete melts

TURTLE74 · Yesterday 23:27

Cottage pie was from last night. I don’t like using chicken past it’s sell by date. She didn’t fancy the pasta bake.

Why do you have a freezer?

Zanatdy · Yesterday 23:30

You don’t mean you froze it but still used before the fresh use by date?

AnneLovesGilbert · Yesterday 23:30

If she’s definitely 22 and not 2 she can make her own bloody meals. Isn’t it time she got a bit more independent?

TyneTeas · Yesterday 23:32

I don't think she reacted well, but I can understand her being a bit disappointed with leftovers while you cooked something different for everyone else

I am confused about what you think the purpose of a freezer is if you still stick to dates for things that you have frozen

I am also confused about defrosting the chicken in time to cook it tonight and how that fits in with the timeline of last night's cottage pie and your daughter asking you not to do a roast dinner

(Edited to add to acknowledge that you made her a pasta bake as a new dish, but she chose to have the leftover cottage pie)

I think you’re confused about the purpose of freezers.

AdjectiveColourNoun · Yesterday 23:35

I’m guessing you mean fridge not freezer re the chicken. Sorry but I think you have effectively derailed your own thread 🤷‍♀️

Joliloily · Yesterday 23:35

She’s an adult, she’s bloody lucky to have someone make a dinner for her. She needs to wind her neck in and count her blessings that her mother is cooking for her. She sounds like a bit of an ungrateful cow, to be honest.

I made her pasta bake as separate dish there was certainly food she could have made but she chose cottage pie instead

She didn’t get leftovers, though. She had a whole pasta bake made for her, which also wasn’t good enough so she opted for the leftovers. I agree, the situation with the chicken and the expiry date is odd, but that aside, the daughter is being a brat.

SharkyBait · Yesterday 23:36

She’s 22, had the choice of three meals available for dinner, or alternatively is completely capable of making something else for herself, and yet she’s whining like a toddler to you because you cooked a roast. Do you ever look at her and feel like you’ve failed at parenting?

Floatlikeafeather2 · Yesterday 23:37

She "looked upset" because you made a roast? You made her something else and she wouldn't eat that either? Who made the cottage pie? You feel bad or is it that she's made you feel bad?
Time she started behaving like an adult, don't you think? Yes of course she's immature spoiled thoughtless mean unreasonable!

CinnamonBuns67 · Yesterday 23:40

Yanbu. If she doesn't like Sunday dinners fair enough she doesn't have to have one but that doesn't mean she gets to dictate what everyone else eats/what you cook for the rest of the family. She's very lucky you made an alternative, I wouldn't have I'd have told her "This is what I'm making, if you don't want it you can sort your own dinner"

OuijaBoard · Yesterday 23:41

It sounds like she was upset that there was nothing for her to eat until she figured out that she could eat the shepherd's pie. Did she understand that you did make the pasta bake specifically for her, thinking she liked it, or did she maybe think it was supposed to be a side for the roast she didn't want? If she understood that the pasta dish was the meal and was made with her in mind, then you'd have to ask her why she's upset that you made the roast chicken too. I'm assuming it's not because she's vegetarian - maybe she didn't want you to go to a lot of trouble, or thought the roast would go to waste?

TyneTeas · Yesterday 23:41

Yeah, sorry. I realised after I posted that I had overlooked the pasta bake and edited it
