AIBU to make a roast when my daughter asked me not to?

TURTLE74 · Yesterday 23:19

Adult daughter 22 is not a fan of roast dinners. She asked me if I could not do a roast dinner today and make something else which I agreed to. However I had a chicken in freezer that needed using up today but I did make a pasta bake which is something she likes as an alternative. I like to make a family dinner on a Sunday for us all. Daughter was disappointed about the roast but I explained to her I had to use chicken up but I did make something she liked as alternative. She said to me you told me you wouldn’t make a roast and she looked upset. She didn’t go hungry though as she had Cottage Pie after saying there’s nothing to eat. AIBU to of made the roast even though there was pasta dish as alternative or was she being unreasonable here as I feel bad about it.

TELL US ABOUT THE CHICKEN!

99bottlesofkombucha · Today 02:03

So if you hadn’t made the roast, there would have been pasta bake… and she would have eaten leftovers instead. Is she always so incredibly entitled and ungrateful?? I made you something specifically last time and you not only didn’t eat it but was mad the pasta bake I made you was not the only thing I cooked. I am not taking any requests from you, it’s clearly time you started cooking for us not the other way around. We won’t be ungrateful twats, so it will be much more rewarding for you. It could not be less rewarding than it is for me to cook you a specific dish and have you so ungrateful you eat something else. I’m cooking what I feel like, you’re an adult.

UnNiddeRides · Today 02:24

Like many others, I don’t understand why you’d freeze a chicken for maybe 24 hours to then thaw it for maybe 48 hours just to cook it on the same day that you would have done if you didn’t freeze it at all.

Either way she had 3 options: unwanted roast, pasta bake or shepherd’s pie. For her next birthday buy her a cookery book and some utensils and tell her Sunday lunch is down to her but warn her about meals you don’t want.

NiftyKoala · Today 02:42

She sounds very immature for 22. Time she cooks Sunday dinner from now on.

SquirrelGG · Today 02:43

I would suggest you tell her to make her own meals in future. Talk about ungrateful.

UnderMirkwood · Today 03:13

The pair of you are daft as a bag of spanners.

Cottage pie was from last night. I don’t like using chicken past it’s sell by date. She didn’t fancy the pasta bake.

You do realise how a freezer works?

CocksBolingey · Today 03:23

So she didn’t want a roast, you made her an alternative but she still got upset because you and the rest of your family enjoyed a roast? What odd behaviour on her part. Nothing whatsoever for you to feel guilty for. At her age, if she doesn’t like what’s being served for dinner, surely she’s capable of cooking/buying herself something else - and I’d be encouraging her to do just that!

crochetandshit · Today 03:32

I was hoping I'd get back to sleep after waking up and hour ago but that's out the fucking window now as I need to go and empty my freezers into the bin 😭

If the chicken was in the freezer, why did it need to be used today?

My husband would do this, when anyone else would just leave it in there

I think I’ve heard the highest entitlement of a 22 year old …

DM makes a roast, a perfectly acceptable meal but DD isn’t keen and actually wants to dictate what she wants s but also what other family eat.

DM makes an alternative, but DD doesn’t fancy that either! Is still upset that a roast has been made for other family members.

DM then offers another alternative and the DD ears that, whilst remaining upset that a roast has been cooked.

DD needs to get a grip!!

FFS she’s not eating in a restaurant, it’s a family home.

Daughter did not ask for any other dish to be made she said can we not have roast but I made her pasta bake

Why couldn’t your daughter cook something different for herself?

Is she disabled, or does she have severe learning difficulties and you’re her carer? As other than that there’s really no excuse for her not to be able to cook her own food.

orangeblluegreen · Today 04:43

Your daughter needs to get a grip.
She is more than welcome to make whatever she wants if the meal someone else is cooking isn’t to her liking 🤨
if everyone else wants, and is happy with a roast, she doesn’t get to dictate something different.

@TURTLE74 Please explain your concept of freezing food and 'use by' dates. 🍿

Hang on. You buy food, stick it in the freezer, but get it out of the freezer before the use by date? Why does it even go in the freezer in the first place in this case? I feel so confused as on the surface this seems madness.

Your DD is unreasonable as if there was an option other than roast, she did not have anything to comment on, let alone complain about. However, if the freezer thing above is correct, I’m getting the vibe of an ‘unusual’ household.

WonderingWanda · Today 05:03

I predict that what op is leaving out if this story is that she has a ds who loves a roast dinner and that he is the favoured child and that is why dd is having a seemingly petty tantrum about the dinner.

Op appears to be very fixed in her mindset and dismissive of anything she doesn't want to hear as evidence of her ignoring the many questions on this thread trying to clarify what went on.

Ismellarathmmm · Today 05:08

This cannot be real 🤣

Was that a typo @TURTLE74, is she actually 12?

Have you never ever said no to her before?

Is she completely incapable of cooking?

Perigold · Today 05:11

But you can keep chicken in the freezer for months, it isn't going to degrade for an extra week or two

I used some frozen turkey mince today that was 2 months past its best before date. I've used stuff that's been longer than that.

Heggettypeg · Today 05:12

I'm wondering what DD would have done if OP had left the chicken in the freezer and made pasta bake for everyone...

pinkfondu · Today 05:16

She was trying to get you to break the chicken date

HideousKinky · Today 05:17

She's 22.

If she doesn't want to eat what you are cooking for the family, she can prepare something for herself.

Despite this, you made her a pasta dish and she didn't eat that either.

Why are you pandering to the whims of an adult who behaves like a spoilt teenager?

AndImVictoriaMalcolm · Today 05:24

I have a young adult daughter and when she doesn’t like what’s on offer she makes her own dinner. She doesn’t dictate what everyone else eats and certainly doesn’t get “upset”.

Wallywobbles · Today 05:29

The best coq au vin I ever made was with a chicken (well coq I suppose) for 8 years.

I really think you’re missing the mark with freezers. The exception to the rule is processed pork which does go rancid after long enough.

fiveyo · Today 05:33

BeardySchnauzer · Today 00:17

i think everyone has agreed she is a brat so can we move onto the more important question of how you put a date on frozen chicken?

😂 this

fiveyo · Today 05:36

Did you roast the chicken from frozen? It sounds like all this happened in the space of 1 day - how did you defrost the chicken?
